View Full Version : IAI Lavi Upgrades
This is a purely theoretical question. I just want to hear some ideas.
Assume that America resumed funding for Israel's Lavi fighter. What are some changes that you think could be made to the Lavi prototype to create the "Lavi-2", to make the original Lavi more modern while still keeping a moderate price tag that Israel can afford.

Streamline design, stealth technology, technical ability to engadge multipule targets at once.
There would be no point in resurrecting the Lavi now, it was good when it was supposed to be manufactured, but by now it would be 'just another eurocanard' no matter how many upgrades you chucked onto it.. It could probably become a Block 60 equivalent but it'd be too expensive to be worth the hassle.
It would be better to cooperate with Indian and European industries to create an entirely new jet - of Europeans not involved in the EF fiasco, Saab come to mind. Just the thought of a Indo-Euro-Israeli 5th generation stealth fighter makes me cream. Not to mention that such a project would have mutual interest for all partners and thus not be subject to one larger partner having full control of the funding. (cough, US, protectionism of arms industries, cough cough)

No. The J-10 is not the Lavi. It uses a Russian engine and Russian and Chinese avionics. One is a one-seater, one is a two-seater. It bears a superficial resemblance which makes one add one and one into two at first, but if you truly compare them they are no more similar than say, the Lavi and the EF.

To me they are!! EF is twin engine , while Lavi is single, i would say that Gripen and Eurofighter are more similar than Lavi and EF. Gripen is also single engine , front wings and* air aspirate *(i don't know word in english i hope u will understand me ) are in deferent position than EF but for me they are more each alike as bouth have flater body. J-10 didn't use Israeli or US trech for shure . Anyways, these planes are no match for Russian Sukhoi as Indian pilots proved(at least not EF),IAI was planing to produce single seat Lavi, yet delta wing planes are all much alike here are some pictures of Gripen and EF!!

Currently, I'm working on my Aerodynamics synthesis and for that, I have studied the aerodynamic properties of some aircraft, including the Lavi jet. From the CFD models I made, it followed that the Lavi performs quite poorly in the transonic regime, for Mach numbers in between 0,8 and 1. I think this is mainly due to the shape of the air inlets.
So, this is a part where changes will have to be made, as well as to the wing sweep angle, which I think is too small.
