Eitam: Small executive jet converted to AWACS

DEBKAfile’s military sources report: The Israeli Air Force’s 122 Nachshon special missions squadron has taken delivery of the “Eitam” – a modified Gulfstream G-550 executive jet, fitted with the newest Israeli airborne early warning system (AEW & C) developed by Israel’s Elta Systems.

Crammed onto the new, extra-small Eitam platform is a long-range intelligence, target tracking and operational control system that can produce aerial pictures deep inside enemy territory, while warning attack formations of approaching threats.

Its electronic support measures (ESM) and communications equipment in support of AEW & C enable the Israeli Air Force’s intelligence and electronic warfare arms to operate hundreds of kilometers inside enemy territory. Eitam can cover Syria, without leaving Israeli air space and target Iran from a great distance.

The new craft can stay airborne for 10 hours at the relatively safe altitude of 40,000 feet. It also has an in-flight refueling capacity.
This third-generation system developed by Israel Air Industries/Elta Phalcom is the first to be fitted into such a small airframe. Eitam is therefore a smaller target than the conventional, large and expensive AWACs craft.

It is also designed to interface with Israel’s spy satellites, Dolphin submarines which, according to foreign sources, are capable of carrying nuclear cruise missiles, other Israeli early warning systems and the Israeli Defense Forces ground commands.

The three Eiatm craft delivered to the Nachshon squadron feature two radar systems operating simultaneously on different frequency bands and, mounted on their fuselage, phased array antennas that provide 360-degree coverage of wide spaces. It replaces the E-2C aircraft retired in the 1990s.

Israel has taken orders for this miniaturized airborne early warning system from India for its fleet of Ilyushin-76 aircraft and the Singapore Air Force.

Wonder how it stands up against the latest model of E-2 HAWKEYE used by the USN?

The Israelis received a total of four E-2C Hawkeyes back in the 1980s, and the airplane proved pivotal during Israel's aerial victories over Lebanon in 1982. However, the Hawkeye has long since been superceded by advances in AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology, and were retired from Israeli service in 1994. Three were later sold to Mexico for duty intercepting drug smugglers in 2002. The remaining airplane was sent to the Israel Air Force Museum at Hatzerim.

The Phalcon AWACS system (incorporating Elta's EL/M-2075 radar suite), with its more modern AESA technology, allows for greater range, and can handle a far greater number of targets. Due to its modular design it is also scalable, and can be retrofitted aboard a variety of airframes.

The first foreign customer for the Phalcon was Chile - which bought one example of the radar system, fitted into a converted 707 airframe. India has ordered three examples - to be fitted into an Illyushin IL-76 airframe. The Heyl haAvir currently operates an unknown number of such systems aboard 707 airframes, which will likely be phased-out once a planned fleet of five Gulfstream G550 platforms are outfitted with an updated version of the system (named "Eitam"). Singapore has ordered four Phalcon systems, also to be fitted aboard G550 aircraft.

Attached is a link to an IAI-supplied video sales pitch which features the first generation of the Phalcon system, as it was supplied to Chile:

The airplane was renamed "Condor" by the Chilean air force.
