Back in the Chicago Gangster days, They used to take the barrel of an automatic; they'd drop it in acid and put a new barrel in it's place. This made the gun ballistically untraceable.
I won't go any further to reveal how to defeat modern ballistic finger printing, it is being done as we speak.
