Exclamation Leftist Anti-Semitism & Anti-Americanism

Leftist anti-semitism

The Arab world is openly anti-semitic, and is not ashamed of it. Europe hates Israel too, but claims that this is different.

"Hallucinatory" anti-semitism
  • Daniel Jonah Goldhagen expresses well the point that anti-semitism has always been "hallucinatory". It is not about what the Jews do. It is about imaginary things. Hitler's fantastical complaints about the Jews were no more based on reality than the medieval complaints about the Jews "causing" the Black Death.
  • Almost all complaints about Israel today are of the same hallucinatory quality. What Israel does and does not do is simply irrelevant to the lives of almost everyone in the Arab world. And yet it consumes so much of their attention, as if Israel and the Jews are to blame for the fact that they are poor, unfree and backward. The entire Arab world is in the grip of a hallucinatory anti-semitism that achieves nothing. The best thing Arabs can do is simply forget about Israel.
  • The Editor-in-Chief of the enemy TV station Al-Jazeera illustrates this hallucinatory hatred of Israel. He claims that the Jews are the cause of all of the Arab world's problems (even in countries with no Jews):
    • Q. "Do you mean to say that if Israel did not exist, there would suddenly be democracy in Egypt, that the schools in Morocco would be better, that the public clinics in Jordan would function better?"
    • A. "I think so."
    • He's not joking. He really believes this.
  • The Globalization of Antisemitism by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen (see also Hate turns from Shylock to Rambo)
  • And in Europe, Israel, rather than money-lending or Christ-killing, is now the main "reason" given for European anti-semitism, and the left is now the centre of Jew-hating, rather than the right.
  • The Paradox of Cruelty: The greater the hatred, the less the reason
  • Anti-semitism's equally hallucinatory sister hatred, anti-Americanism.
Hatred of Israel is the new anti-semitism
The left and Israel
Left-wing Holocaust denial: Comparing free societies to the Nazis. Comparing trivial things to the Nazis.
  • Comparing a western democratic government to the Nazis, or their police to the Nazis, or your teachers to the Nazis, is a form of Holocaust denial. It says that killing millions of innocent women and children by shooting them in pits or putting them in ovens is "just like" telling some spoilt young person that he can't stay up late, or demonstrate on certain streets.
  • "Bush equals Hitler" adds up to holocaust denial by Jonah Goldberg - "If your son is murdered and I claim that it never happened, I am denying the existence of a crime. But if your son is murdered and I compare that tragedy to losing your car keys, that is a form of denial, too."
  • "Bush=Hitler" by Jonah Goldberg
  • Comparing Bush to Hitler
  • It is not just moronic youth that engage in this left-wing trivialisation of the Holocaust. It is a firmly established part of left-wing politics and demonstrations to compare free countries like America and Britain - and, most unforgivably, Israel - to Nazi Germany.
  • Bigotry outside Faneuil Hall by Alan Dershowitz, on leftist anti-semites screaming that he is just like Hitler. See call for protest. "The sin that, in the opinion of the screamers, warranted this comparison between me and the man who murdered dozens of my family members was my support for Israel."

A vile cartoon, November 14, 2008, in the Emory Wheel student newspaper, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, compares Jews to Nazis.

See controversy.

Obviously, being prevented from killing Jews is the same kind of thing as being herded into a ghetto for extermination.

What kind of mind can regard the life-saving Israeli wall, which has led to a massive drop in suicide bombings, as similar to Nazi walls? I don't remember the Jews of 1940 suicide-bombing German civilians in coffee shops. I don't recall that the Germans herded them into ghettos in order to protect the German people.

What Israel is up against:

Islamists protesting about Gaza, 10 Jan 2009, in Canada (of all places!) call for the extermination of the Jews of Israel.

"Jewish child, you are gonna ****in' die!"

What are these people doing in the West? Why were they allowed in? Why are they not all deported?

From here.

Left-Wing Bloodbaths

Radical leftists would have us believe that they stand for democracy, progress, human rights and social justice – but when they seize power, they impose slavery, terror, famine, concentration camps and mass murder. As the Marxists used to say, this is no accident.

General

John Kekes, Why Robespierre Chose Terror
The human costs of radical left-wing ideology during the French Revolution: “A remarkable feature of the ideological frame of mind is that those in its grip actually believe these justifications for disemboweling, lynching, mutilating, burying alive, drowning, and hacking to pieces their unfortunate victims.”

Arrow The Modern Left

The Modern Left

http://markhumphrys.com/modern.left.html

Introduction - What is the left?

What does "left" mean in the modern world? I propose that the modern left is defined as those who do not support the West against its enemies.

The left has a proud history on some issues (mainly social issues) and a less proud history on others (mainly foreign policy). The left pioneered rights for women, blacks, gays, atheists and other minorities. It opposed religious and sexual censorship, and enabled sexual freedom. This is the greatest part of its heritage. But this is history now. All this is uncontroversial now. Most of the modern right agrees with this basic agenda. Certainly I do. So what defines "the left"?

I would submit that the main thing that defines the left in the modern world is its approach to foreign policy - with the economy and crime being lesser issues that distinguish them. And while I basically agree with the left on civil liberties, on the issues of the economy, crime and foreign policy I think the left is simply wrong. Its ideas will lead to a less, not more, prosperous society. Its ideas will lead to more, not less, crime. And its ideas will lead to a more, not less, dangerous world.

The moderate peacenik leftist's foreign policy is the most dangerous of all his ideas. He does not explictly love tyranny and hate democracy. But he talks as if he does. He is disgusted by the West (especially leadership and front-line countries like America and Israel), does not admire it, mocks its leaders, spits on its military and on any soldier fool enough to die for it, and in general (whether he likes it or not) gives support and encouragement to the barbarians outside the gates who wish to destroy the West and everything we love.

The mind of the left is very familiar to me. He does not really believe in the existence of barbarians outside the gates. He thinks violent communist or third-world or Islamic revolutionaries must have logical reasons for what they do. They must be responding to rational grievances, rather than be driven, say, by demons inside their heads. He believes that if the West - and in particular America - was weaker, it would be a less (rather than infinitely more) violent and dangerous world. In short, he is someone whose foreign policy ideas will lead to the triumph of tyranny abroad and ultimately at home too.

Modern leftists (on foreign policy and economics at least) are the counter-Enlightenment - those who refuse to believe that we basically solved these problems in the 18th century, and instead look to some imaginary utopia that won't actually work. Safe in the bosom of capitalist democracies, they attack their protector, and praise foreign tyrannies, without fear of consequences. But their ideas do have consequences. Western leftist intellectuals have spread endless misery to the third world, leading to the death of millions. And there is always a threat at home too. So far, their ideas have not been successful at home. If they ever were, Israel, and Europe, and the West itself, would fall.
  • A good definition of the "left" is the people who want the West to lose in war against totalitarian enemies, or don't care. For example, the people who want America to lose in Iraq, or don't care.
  • Poll of Americans, Jan 2007 - 34 percent of Democrats want America to lose in Iraq, and a further 15 percent don't know/care. That's 49 percent of Democrats don't want America to win.
  • The War At Home, David Reinhard, January 28, 2007 - "American men and women are going off to fight, and perhaps die, and more than one out of five voters wants them to fail. Sorry, this tells us more about their cankered souls than about the war itself."
The dream of revolution

If we define the modern left as those who do not support the West against its enemies, then it has a wide range - from violent communist revolutionary totalitarians to peace-lovers who simply abhor war and imperialism and prefer to appease foreign tyrants. What they have in common - the moderates as well as extremists - is a dream of a utopian society that is different in some revolutionary way from modern bourgeois, western, capitalist consumerist democracy. But perhaps the single most important lesson of the past century is that this dream of utopia has been responsible for more deaths and suffering than any other human idea.

The lesson of the 20th century

In the 20th century, 100 million people were killed for the dream of a new revolutionary socialist society, and the killing continues today. 2 billion more lives were ruined through state-caused poverty, famine and emigration. 1 billion more people in the West lived for decades under the threat of nuclear annihilation by Marx's followers. The lesson of the 20th century is that boring bourgeois conservatives are not the mass killers - starry-eyed idealists are.

And yet the western left seems to have learned nothing from the 20th century. Here they are again, those siren voices, unashamed and free of guilt, still insulting the West, still looking for alternatives. If we listen to them, 100 million more will die in the 21st century.

Read the Communism page first. Understand the butchery that has already taken place first, before you follow the siren voices of any new revolutions. Revolutions do not necessarily liberate. Historically, revolutions have enslaved as often as they have liberated. 100 million dead

The Museum of Communism has an excellent FAQ summarising a number of points I've felt for years:
  1. Stalin and Mao are (by a long shot) the 2 greatest killers of all time. Hitler is a far distant 3rd. By any logical definition, Stalin and Mao are the 2 most evil men that have ever existed. In fact, since there is no devil, Stalin and Mao are the 2 most evil beings that have ever existed in the universe.
  2. Some people let Lenin off the hook. Lenin was a mass murderer.
  3. Some people let Trotsky off the hook. As leader of the Red Army in Lenin's war on the peasants, Trotsky was a mass murderer.
  4. Some people think Marxism is "a good idea in theory", and the fact that every communist regime that ever existed has been murderously totalitarian is "a coincidence". This is crap. Totalitarianism is inherent in Marxism.
  5. By any logical definition, socialism is the most evil idea in human history. Its record is more murderous than racism, tribalism, ethnic genocide and fascism, or the most bloodthirsty religion. Socialism has killed 100 million people. And it's still not finished.
Communism is a sister philosophy of Fascism

The Museum of Communism also makes the point that, despite their denials, fascism and communism are pretty much the same thing. Both are totalitarian ideologies with contempt for dissent, debate and elections. In both ideologies, the individual is worthless and exists to serve the state. Indeed, fascism is merely a school of socialism.
  • As John J. Ray points out, fascism and communism are pretty much the same thing:
  • Hitler did not invent the modern industrialised killing of the genocidal totalitarian state. Lenin did. Hitler just copied what the Bolsheviks were already doing. The Bolsheviks had already killed about 20 million people before Hitler even got going.
  • And the Nazis are the only example of a genocidal fascist state (unless we count their puppets like Croatia separately). Mussolini and Franco were just "normal" murderous thugs - not truly genocidal. Whereas communism produces truly genocidal regimes routinely - Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Tito, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, Mengistu. Going by history, communism is a far more certain route to genocide than fascism.
  • My aim is not to defend fascism. Between two philosophies that killed millions of innocents in cold blood, one cannot say that one is "better" than the other. Both represent pure evil. Rather, my aim is to demonise communism, and put it alongside fascism as a sister philosophy, little different and certainly not "better" in any way than nazism.
The totalitarian left - let's kill 100 million more
The peacenik left - let's make the West weak and defenceless

The moderate, peacenik leftist does not of course want violent communist revolution. He believes the left's 20th century tolerance of communism was a mistake in some way. He thinks the left can reject this, and a "new left" can be formed which is still admirable.

But the consequences of his hostility to America, Israel, Britain, and all front-line western states, will be the same - Western weakness and decline, and the victory of anti-Western totalitarians around the world.

The moderate, peacenik, atheist, gay-friendly leftist does not really support the medieval Islamofascist agenda of Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda and the Iraqi "resistance". But he acts as if he desires their victory.
Bumper sticker in The Goode Family sums up the bizarre moral universe of the modern peacenik leftie.

"Communism is not a reaction against the failure of the nineteenth century to organize optimal economic output. It is a reaction against its comparative success."
- John Maynard Keynes, 1934.

"I do think America is a great idea. I think the American revolution is the only one which has lasted, the only one left. It still has a dynamic. It is the only one capable of a universal application."
- Christopher Hitchens with the last word on the end of the murderous utopian century of the left.

Arrow CNN's Mideast editor writes: one of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot

CNN's Mideast editor writes on Twitter: "Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah ... one of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot"

Her own words, in a tribute to the cleric who green-lighted Hizballah's suicide attacks, including the 1983 barracks bombing that killed 241 Americans. "One of Hizballah's giants," indeed. "CNN reporter on terrorist: 'I respect him a lot'," by Aaron Klein for World Net Daily, July 5:
TEL AVIV - CNN's senior Middle East affairs editor yesterday professed her "respect" for an anti-American Islamic extremist who was an ideological guide to the Hezbollah terror group and who was accused of masterminding a 1983 attack on U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 Americans.
"Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah ... one of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot," wrote CNN senior editor for Middle East affairs Octavia Nasr on her personal Twitter page.
241 dead Americans and their families would disagree.
Fadlallah, Lebanon's top Shiite Muslim cleric who was once regarded as the spiritual leader of Hezbollah, has a long history of supporting terrorism against the U.S. and Israel. He was accused, for example, of masterminding the 1983 U.S. Marine barracks bombing. Although he had strenuously denied any connection to the attack, he continued to publicly support anti-American and anti-Israeli attacks.
He also supported the seizure and hostage-taking at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and has been known to praise Palestinian suicide bombings.
He has said of America, "In its policy that aspires to impose hegemony on the world is an evil with no good in it."
News media reports claim that in recent years Fadlallah drifted away from radical Islamist politics and has espoused policies of moderation.
However, media watchdog HonestReporting.com points out that he praised the Palestinian shooting massacre of eight Israeli students at a Jerusalem yeshiva on March 6, 2008, and has praised Iran's efforts to build long-range missiles as the "pride of the Islamic world" in 2008.
Just last week, Reuters reported that when asked what he needed by a nurse at the Lebanese hospital in which he was being treated, Fadlallah replied: "For the Zionist entity to cease to exist."
Fadlallah also has engaged in Holocaust denial.
In a March 2008 interview with Al-Manar TV Fadlullah stated, "Zionism has inflated the number of victims in this holocaust beyond imagination. They say there were six million Jews - not six million, not three million, or anything like that. ... But the world accepted this [figure], and it does not allow anyone to discuss this."
Fadlallah survived several assassination attempts, including a 1985 car bombing near his south Beirut home that killed 80 people. During Israel's 2006 war in Lebanon, Fadlallah's residence was bombed and reduced to rubble by Israeli warplanes. Fadlallah was not at home.
Nasr, meanwhile, has a history of controversial remarks on terrorism, WND has learned.
In 2006, while serving as CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs, Nasr stated in an online CNN interview that "terrorism for one person is a freedom fight for another."
"So, you know, if you think about it, 'terrorism' is a subjective term depending on which side you are on," Nasr continued.
Nasr previously worked for the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, a brainchild of Lebanon's former President Bashir Gemayel. At the time of the LBC's founding in 1985, the pro-Western Gemayel was leader of the Lebanese Army.

No suprise, Jimmy Carter was a big supporter of this terrorist

"Don't be fooled" by tributes to "moderate" Hizballah cleric

Since his death, Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah has been hailed as a "merciful father" by Hassan Nasrallah, and in the West as a "moderate" Muslim, largely for having expressed disapproval of the 9/11 attacks. But there is much more to Fadlallah's story that has been so quickly forgotten.
"Sheikh Fadlallah was the terrorist mastermind behind the Lebanon hostage crisis," by Con Coughlin for the Telegraph, July 5:
Don't be fooled by all the tributes that are pouring out following the death in Beirut at the weekend of Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, the so-called spiritual leader of the radical Shi'ite Muslim militia Hizbollah. The U.S. State Department's classifaction of Fadlallah as a terrorist was spot on, and when you look back at his track record you can see he was right up there with other infamous terror masterminds, such as Abu Nidal and Carlos the Jackal.
One of Fadlallah's last acts before he died was to issue a fatwa authorising the use of suicide bomb attacks. The mystery here is why he waited so long. For as a founder member of Hizbollah - he sat on the organisation's ruling council -Fadlallah gave his personal approval to the massive suicide truck bomb attacks that levelled the American Embassy and Marine compound in Beirut in 1983, killing more than 300 people, including the then CIA station chief. Fadlallah gave his personal blessing to the suicide bombers before they left for their deadly mission.
Fadlallah also masterminded the hostage crisis in Lebanon in the mid-1980s. I remember interviewing him at his house in Beirut's southern suburbs in 1985 at the height of Terry Waite's mission to free the Americans then being held by Hizbollah on Iran's orders (Fadlallah was a close friend of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran's Islamic revolution.)
Fadlallah himself was charm personified during the interview, offering me sweet tea and offering his apologies that he could do nothing to release the hostages, but their prospects might improve if only the pesky Americans would stop trying to involve themselves in Lebanon's affairs. But when I left one of his "bodyguards" insisted on seeing my passport. Later I discovered from a Lebanese friend that they were Hizbollah terrorists checking to see if I was an American. Had I been, I would have been carted off to a dank cell. I was lucky. Six months later my friend John McCarthy paid a similar visit to Sheikh Fadlallah, and was kidnapped the following day.
The miracle of Sheikh Fadlallah's life is that he lived to a ripe old age and died in his bed. I, for one, will not miss his malign influence on the Middle East.

NY Times Article Called Political Collusion with Radical Left

A New York Times article suggesting that the United States gives preferential tax breaks to Jewish organizations and movements in Judea and Samaria was written in collusion with the radical leftist pro-Palestinian movement, and timed to coincide with a meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, according to a report by media watchdog Honest Reporting.

The NYT article alleged that Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria are taking advantage of U.S. tax breaks in order to conduct illegal building and settlement in the region. The article states that the residents' organizations have an easier time raising and using money from American donors for their cause than they have doing so in Israel. Over 40 pro-Israel groups in the United States have raised more than $200 million on behalf of Jewish life in Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem in the last 10 years, according to the article.

Yet an analysis conducted by non-governmental organization watchdog NGO Monitor and publicized by Honest Reporting has concluded that the NYT report is very similar to an anti-Zionist campaign run by the anti Zionist Gush Shalom organization in 2009.

According to Honest Reporting, a confidential memo of July 2009 outlined a campaign to wrench federal tax exempt status from all U.S. charities providing support to Jews in Judea and Samaria.

Furthermore, while the NYT article did make quick mention of the fact that pro-Palestinian organizations also enjoy tax-exempt status in the United States, the article states that because American policy is against a Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria, tax-exemption for charitable organizations which support them is objectionable. "The donations to the settler movement stand out because of the centrality of the settlement issue in the current talks and the fact that Washington has consistently refused to allow Israel to spend American government aid in the settlements," said the article. It then quoted a senior State Department official who said the tax-exemptions are detrimental to US policy. “It’s a problem," he said. “It’s unhelpful to the efforts that we’re trying to make.”

Honest Reporting noted that the article did not state the fact that there are also a significant number of pro-Palestinian tax exempt NGOs which promote policies contrary to that of the United States, such as a one-Arab-state solution or anti-Israel delegitimization programs.

CAMERA, the media watchdog organization, noted in its critique of the NYT article that there are obvious omissions: The New Israel Fund heavily subsidizes radical anti Zionist Israel-based organizations like Adallah, Breaking the Silence, Gisha, B'Tselem and Machsom Watch. These five organizations, together with many similar groups supported by the New Israel Fund, effectively work to undermine Israel's standing in the world and its ability to defend itself. Yet among literally hundreds of organizations funded by the NIF not one is mentioned in the article. The only similar group the Times does mention is Peace Now, though it is termed an "Israeli civil and human rights group," which the paper allows might be "accused of having a blatant political agenda."

The NYT article itself states that the money "goes mostly to schools, synagogues, recreation centers and the like, legitimate expenditures under the tax law" and that "most contributions go to large, established settlements close to the boundary with Israel that would very likely be annexed in any peace deal, in exchange for land elsewhere", leading CAMERA to ask" "So why the front page story?"

The Jews’ Liberalism Addiction
Rabbi Byron L. Sherwin explains why, with growing anti-Semitism on the Left, American Jews still won't shift to the Right

by Jamie Glazov

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Byron L. Sherwin, an accomplished theologian, ethicist, scholar and teacher. Ordained a Rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, he received his PHD in Cultural History from the University of Chicago. Sherwin is the author or editor of 28 books and over 150 articles and monographs, most recently Faith Finding Meaning: A Theology of Judaism (Oxford, 2009). For 40 years, he has served at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies at Chicago, where he currently is Distinguished Service Professor and Vice-President for Academic Affairs Emeritus.

FP: Rabbi Sherwin, welcome back to Frontpage Interview.

In our recent interview, we discussed why the vast majority of American Jews identify themselves as political liberals and what the self-destructive consequences are of them doing so.

I would like to continue today by discussing why a shift to conservatism has not yet occurred among American Jews and if you think that such a shift might soon occur.

Let me first begin with this question: What have been some changing realities of American Jewish life? And how have they influenced Jewish political views and behaviors?

Sherwin: Thanks Jamie.

These are the kinds of questions that would really take at least a book each to answer completely. But, simply put, there have been enormous changes in American Jewish life, especially in the last century, particularly in the decades since World War II. Nonetheless, I suggest that even though it seems surprising, illogical, ironic and counter-intuitive, these major changes have not had a real influence on American Jewish political views and behaviors.

Widespread social and economic discrimination, rampant anti-Semitism, poverty, lack of employment opportunities, political marginalization, a feeling of vulnerability, and a perception that conservatives considered Jews as personas non grata in America—along with other conservative attitudes and policies that were reminiscent of those experienced by Jews in Europe—propelled Jewish immigrants and their children into the liberal and radical camps, including the American Communist and Socialists parties. The outset of the Great Depression, and the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, solidified the overwhelming allegiance of Jews to the Democratic Party. Jews voted more heavily for Roosevelt than any other group of Americans, increasing the percentage of their vote to 90 percent for his last two terms. This led one Jewish observer to say that “Jews believe in three veltn (“worlds”): die velt (the natural world), yene velt (the supernatural world), and Roose-velt.

FP: Let me interrupt for a second. Why this support for Roosevelt and what were the consequences?

Byron: The overwhelming majority of American Jews perceived the Roosevelt administration–its advocacy of government activism in support of economic growth; its support of unions, the poor and middle-class workers; and, the opportunities of government service afforded to Jews and others–to be in their best interests.

Now, the almost unanimous alignment of American Jews with Roosevelt’s Democratic Party led to the decline of Jewish affiliation both with the Republican Party on the right and the Socialist Party on the left. Jews embraced the Democratic Party’s program of using government initiative to address poverty, economic issues and discrimination. Jews who came to America as immigrants and their children, saw the Democratic Party as a powerful and dominant force in American political life committed to the social, economic and political advancement of a liberal agenda and of social programs that resonated with Jewish convictions, needs and aspirations, and which affirmed many of the political impulses they had carried with them from Europe. Jews perceived the Democratic coalition as a source, not only of opportunity but also of protection and safety from the attitudes and actions of hostile American institutions, which they identified with the oppression by conservatives that they had experienced in Europe.

Given the socio-economic conditions of American Jewry back then, and given the attraction of the ideology and activities of liberal politics to a generation of Jewish immigrants and their immediate progeny who sought amelioration from the disabilities of those conditions, the Jewish allegiance to liberal values and to the Democratic Party, seemed to make perfect sense. Jewish interests, as most Jews saw them, were best represented by the liberal politics of Roosevelt’s New Deal Democrats.

FP: Contemporary American Jews?

Byron: American Jews today are far removed from the immigrant generation, and the conditions that characterized it. The self-image and correlative political strategies of past generations were rooted in the conviction that in America, as in Europe, the Jews were an out-group, perhaps the paradigmatic out-group. But, this is no longer the case. In recent decades, Jews have become an in-group in American cultural life, the professions, higher education, science, business, politics, etc.

For example, no longer is Jewish access to our elite academic institutions either precluded or restricted by quotas, as it was not so long ago. Rather, Jews now serve as presidents, deans, faculty and students at our premier academic institutions in numbers far exceeding their percentage of the American population. Socio-economic-based discrimination is largely a distant memory. The pervasive poverty of the immigrant population is long gone.
American Jewry has achieved extraordinary socio-economic upward mobility and social acceptance, perhaps unparalleled in the past two millennia of Jewish historical experience.

Yet, despite vast changes in American Jewish life historically, socially and economically, Jewish political affiliations and behaviors largely fail to reflect those changes. Rather, it has been other phenomena in American Jewish life, especially the growing secularization of American Jewry, their progressive detachment from traditional Jewish teachings, and their increasing liberalization of the form of Judaism they do affirm, that has kept them squarely in the liberal camp. Though the Jewish theologian Emil Fackenheim considered “liberal Judaism” as an oxymoron, the vast majority of American Jews who continue to maintain synagogue affiliation, affiliate with liberal forms of Judaism. The largest synagogue movement is Reform Judaism, and in the words of one observer, “the only difference between the left wing of the Democratic Party and Reform Judaism are the Jewish holidays.”

Liberalism’s economic program is oriented primarily toward the poor. When American Jews were struggling to establish themselves economically, liberal policies made sense, as a matter of self-interest. But today, when American Jews have achieved a position of unparalleled affluence and influence, such policies seem to conflict with Jewish self-interest. Yet, studies consistently show that Jews largely endorse the programs for “income distribution,” increased government spending on domestic programs and less on defense, and higher taxes, characteristic of liberal Democrats. For instance, though the current generation of baby-boomers is on the verge of inheriting an unprecedented amount of wealth from their aging parents, Jews supported Democrats in 2008, who made no secret of their intention to reinstitute the “death tax” and to tax inheritances up to a rate of 55 percent, as well as raising other taxes across the board. Unlike other groups of Americans who became more conservative on economic issues once they achieve some modicum of economic success, American Jews continue to endorse policies and programs that are clearly not in their economic self-interest.

Anti-Semitism, which Jews– based upon their experiences in Europe and upon the immigrant experience in the United States—readily identify with the political right, has actually declined on the right while it has escalated on the left, especially among those who form the coalition that currently comprises the left wing of the Democratic Party. Yet, liberal Jews seem either to ignore or to rationalize this currently expanding phenomenon of anti-Semitism among liberals.

FP: And how does the support for Israel play into this?

Byron: Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, American Jews have advocated strongly for its security and its support. A growing hostility to Israel on the American political left has been matched by an expanding support for Israel on the American political right, especially among Evangelicals. Yet, it would seem that the majority of American Jews, who refuse to abandon their liberal principles even where their own self-interests are concerned, prefer the anti-Israel proclivities of the left to the pro-Israel position of the right. The stated commitment against prejudice by liberal Jews, does not seem to extend to those whose conservative political views they do not share. Among liberal American Jews, one strong prejudice, rooted in the immigrant experience, continues to manifest itself: fear, mistrust and prejudice against many Christian institutions and their spokespersons.
Liberal American Jews’ fear of religion, including their own, so poignantly described by Elliot Abrams in his book “Faith or Fear,” is at the roots of the liberal Jewish advocacy of an absolute separation of church and state, and of the confinement of religion to the private personal sphere rather than to the “public square.” It is ironic that on issues of public policy, liberals preclude religious intrusion, except where it endorses their own agenda, such as was the case with the civil rights movement. Liberal Jews would probably have considered the views of George Washington as un-American when he said: “And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. . . reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

Studies have shown that Jewish religious and ethnic identity is immeasurably strengthened among students who attend Jewish “Day Schools.” But, the dogma of church-state separation, as interpreted by liberal Jews, has led to persistent opposition to tuition voucher programs and other forms of aid for Jewish and non-Jewish private schools. With the current economic downturn, many such schools are on the verge of closing or already have closed for economic reasons. Though liberal synagogues today quietly accept funds from Homeland Security, these same congregations oppose any governmental funds going toward Jewish education.

In short, Jamie, to return to your original question: despite what one might reasonably expect, the enormous changes in American Jewish life of the past few decades, have basically left Jewish political affiliations and activities unaffected.

FP: For 40 years or more pundits have predicted a shift to conservativism and away from the Democratic Party by American Jews. You have helped us understand why it hasn’t occurred.

Now, do you think it will?

Sherwin: More than 40 years ago, Chales Liebman described the future of Jewish liberalism in America as “bleak.” Liebman believed that once American Jews realized that liberalism rejected “intrinsic Jewish values” and threatened the continuity of the Jewish people as Jews, they would reject liberalism. Liebman further opined that once American Jews perceived anti-Semitism as coming from the left, sometimes in more virulent forms than from the right; once American Jews began to see themselves as part of the “in-group” and no longer as an “out-group,” Jews would abandon liberalism. However, Liebman was wrong.

In the early 1970s, a growing number of observers of American Jewry predicted a gradual but inevitable shift toward conservatism and away from the Democratic Party by American Jews. They believed that positive changes in American Jewish life that escalated after World War II, such as a decline in anti-Semitism and discrimination, greater social acceptance of Jews, enhanced educational and professional opportunity, greater economic prosperity, and the transition of American Jews from an “out-group” to an “in-group,” would precipitate a shift of perception in American Jewish self-interest from a liberal perspective identified with the realities of the pre-war immigrant population to a conservative perspective more in line with the current interests and socio-economic conditions of American Jewry. But, they, too, were wrong.

There were those who interpreted the occasional dips in Jewish voting patterns from the 90 percent received by Roosevelt during his last two terms to the 60 percent received by Stevenson in 1952 and 1956, as the initiation of a new trend toward conservatism and an easing of the Democratic hold upon Jews. But, the 80 percent of the Jewish vote received by Kennedy and the 90 percent received by Johnson allayed those expectations. The dip below 50 percent received by Carter in 1980 and the 40 percent received by Reagan in 1980, was also perceived as the beginning of a trend. But, when the Democratic presidential candidate in the five elections between 1992 and 2008 garnered at least 75 percent of the Jewish vote with Bush 41 in 1992 receiving only 11 percent and Bush 43 in 2000 receiving only 19 percent, such predictions again waned.

After the 2008 presidential election, where the liberal policies of Obama and the Democratic Party received a higher percentage of Jewish votes than it did from any other white ethnic group, the expectation for a surge in Jewish conservatism seemed a moot point. Nonetheless, in recent months, disaffection with many of the policies and of the performance of liberal democratic policies, and especially of the Obama’s administration’s Middle East policies, have led to a “buyers remorse” among many American Jews. As a result, pundits are once more predicting a seismic shift in American Jewry toward conservatism and the Republican Party. However, about this I have strong doubts.

FP: Why the doubts?

Sherwin: Though Jews may eventually abandon Obama, they cannot be expected to abandon either liberalism or the Democratic Party. Though some shift may be discernible in the 2010 and 2012 elections, I do not expect any substantial change—though I would be delighted were one to finally occur.
The indoctrination of American Jews to believe that both Judaism and Jewish identity are socially and politically linked in nature and essence, is a stranglehold that remains too formidable to break at present. I therefore believe that like those of earlier decades, those who now predict an imminent massive shift of American Jews toward conservatism and toward the Republican Party will be disappointed.

Nonetheless, all hope is not lost. Members of a new and upcoming generation of American Jews, who see the experiences and ideologies of an immigrant generation only as distant memory, who see themselves as being very much part of the in-group, who perceive liberal policies as mortgaging their future, may eventually turn toward a more conservative political agenda.

Finally, any movement of Jews toward conservatism or toward the Republican Party in the coming elections will be influenced by how conservatives and Republicans present their message. Though past obstacles to why Jews should affiliate with conservatism may have been removed, compelling reasons as to why they should have not yet been clearly articulated. Throughout modern history, Jews have endorsed political movements aimed at furthering individual liberty and opportunity, committed to ending discrimination, enhancing Jewish security, and both protecting and furthering Jewish interests. Only if the conservative and Republican message can clearly reflect these concerns, is there a chance for increasing numbers of American Jews, especially young American Jews, to drift away from liberalism and from their overwhelming Jewish allegiance to the Democratic Party.

Exclamation One World, One Opinion »

One World, One Opinion
International left-wing media both reports and decides the message heard around the globe
by Dennis Prager

Here’s a challenge: Can you name one difference between what the media refer to as “world opinion” and Left-wing opinion?

Take all the time you need. But no matter how much time you take, you probably won’t come up with any examples.

Here are examples of major world issues and what is deemed “world opinion.” They happen to all be Leftist views as well.

– hatred of President George W. Bush and admiration of President Barack Obama

– Manmade carbon emissions lead to global warming and devastation of
the environment. Therefore, the world’s nations must tax carbon-based energy.

– The American invasion of Iraq was morally wrong, motivated by desire for oil.

– Israel is bad, as exemplified most recently by the Turkish flotilla incident.

– The American free-enterprise system is inferior to Europe’s welfare-state systems.

– The American health care system is inferior to that of all other wealthy countries (see last week’s column).

This list in no way differs from a list of Leftist positions. Nor would any other list of “world opinion” positions differ in any meaningful way from Leftist positions.

Why is that?

The most obvious answer would be that much of the world is Leftist in its views. Therefore, Leftist positions and world opinion are the same.

The truth is, for reasons to be explained, there is some validity to this explanation.

But there is a deeper and more accurate explanation: The world’s media and virtually all international organizations are Leftist in their politics, and they both define “world opinion” and in turn shape it.

Of course, there are other powerful institutions in the world that shape public opinion. But virtually none contravene the Left-wing views of the world’s media and world organizations on world issues.

Take Islam, for example. Islamic institutions shape the opinions of the majority of the world’s billion Muslims. But while the Left and Islam diverge on a great number of issues — women’s rights, gay rights, individual rights, press freedom, freedom of dissent, religious pluralism, just to name a few major ones — they coincide on international issues and views of America.

The Islamic world, Leftist media and the United Nations agree on virtually every international issue — on the villainy of Israel first and foremost, on support for the United Nations, on weakening American influence around the world, on opposition to the use of American force in Iraq and Afghanistan, on abolishing nuclear weapons, etc.

Another highly influential institution is the Roman Catholic Church.

But its differences from Leftist positions are only on personal moral matters such as same-sex marriage and abortion. It is not a strong voice against the Left, and like the Left, it is largely silent on moral problems within the Muslim world. When the current pope did make a statement critical of Islam, the world press — and therefore “world opinion” — were united in condemning him. The world media, in keeping with its Left-wing agenda, is incomparably more critical of the Catholic Church than of Islam.

To better understand how the Left, the United Nations and most international institutions determine “world opinion,” take the issue of manmade global warming. The United Nations declared global warming a closed issue, the world’s media uncritically echo the U.N. report, and that’s it.

According to a BBC World Service poll of 22,000 people in 21 countries (as reported by WorldPublicOpinion.org, in 2007), “Large majorities around the world believe that human activity causes global warming and that strong action must be taken, sooner rather than later, in developing as well as developed countries.” It is remarkable how similar “world opinion” on global warming sounds to the Left’s position on global warming. The Left believes it is the vital environmental issue of our time, the United Nations announces it is, the media around the world report it as such, and lo and behold, the “world” demands immediate and drastic action to combat something that may happen (if at all) sometime in the distant future.

The great exception to all this is the United States. A vigorous conservative part of the American population has contempt for “world opinion,” rightly regarding it as useless against real evil and as a mere reflection of Leftist views. Equally important, and almost unique to America, there is a vigorous conservative news and opinion media.

Compared to the Leftist domination of virtually all mass news media — newspapers, magazines and television — the conservative media are almost tiny. But talk radio, the Internet, Ronald Reagan and his ideological heirs in the Republican Party, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal editorial page have made an impact that belies their numbers.

But they are only powerful in America. And even there, it is often difficult to overcome the United Nations, the Left, the universities, the media and “world opinion.”

And conservative influence in America and everywhere else is in direct proportion to the public coming to understand that “world opinion” is a creation of the Left, reported by the Left.

Exclamation The Religious Left continues its quest to scapegoat Israel

The Church Led Astray
The Religious Left continues its quest to scapegoat Israel
by Mark D. Tooley

The General Assembly of the almost 3 million-member Presbyterian Church (USA) meeting this week is debating whether to endorse an official church study committee report essentially endorsing the Palestinian “Nakba” narrative that faults Israel for nearly all Middle East strife and suffering.
That Middle East Study Committee report is so extreme that even left-leaning J Street, a Jewish group usually Palestinian friendly, urged Presbyterians to reject it. “Supporting a Palestinian state does not, should not, and cannot mean tearing down Israel,” implored J Street Vice President Rachel Lerner to Presbyterians meeting in Minneapolis. She also disavowed the report’s commendation of J Street as sign of “hope,” making clear that the report’s Presbyterian authors never consulted J Street.

“I want to be very clear about this — this is not meant to be a threat,” Lerner declared. He continued:
If this is passed we will not be issuing a directive to our locals that they cannot partner with local Presbyterian churches — but with the passage of this study, the Church will alienate us and as a result our activists will not want to work with you and this will damage completely the possibility of a future relationship.
Reporting she was “saddened” and “angered” by the report, Lerner complained it was:
So one-sided, so devoid of any balance, that I fear this report will not only not achieve its desired effect — positive change in the region and a just two-state solution — but it will be counter-productive to forging a meaningful peace and will significantly hinder the possibility of future efforts to work together toward what for most of us is a shared common goal.
Lerner urged Presbyterians to give more than “lip service” to Israel’s security and warned that U.S. aid cut-offs to Israel would “only undercut the possibilities for peace in our lifetime.” She was echoed by prominent liberal Presbyterians who deplored the report’s harsh tone against Israel. Among them was former New York Times religion reporter Gus Niebuhr, the grand nephew of famed Christian ethicist and pro-Zionist Reinhold Niebuhr.

“Reputations are hard to win and they are easy to lose,” Niebuhr warned fellow Presbyterians, telling them that the “terribly imbalanced” anti-Israel report would “obscure” Presbyterian influence in America. There is “no bright line between anti-Israel and anti-Semitism in the minds of most Americans,” he insisted. Niebuhr was joined by Presbyterian pastor and Christian Century magazine publisher John Buchanan in sounding the alarm against the report’s bias. Buchanan’s opposition was significant because his long time predecessor as magazine chief, United Methodist minister James Wall, is vitriolically anti-Israel and has essentially denounced the Presbyterian report’s opponents as agents of Israeli propaganda.

Of course, the Presbyterians are not considering lengthy condemnations of other nations. Israel remains the nearly only overseas cause of concern for Religious Left elites. In his testimony to his fellow Presbyterians in Minneapolis this week, my colleague Alan Wisdom noted the report angrily employs words such as “sin,” “evil,” “appalled,” “ghastly,” and “intolerable” regarding Israel, which is likened to a “Nazi state,” apartheid South Africa, and the former Soviet Union.

Meanwhile, Alan observed that the report contrastingly and more gently observed that Hamas, while “militant,” compassionately spends 90 percent of its resources on “social services.” There is no mention of Hamas’ radical Islam and dedication to Israel’s destruction. Meanwhile, the report similarly observes that “Hezbollah, while classified as a ‘terrorist organization,’ demonstrates through its social services and governmental participation that it is a more broadly political body guided by an Islamist viewpoint of some flexibility.” With equal generosity, the report dismissed fears about Iranian nukes because “Iran has not invaded any other country for centuries.”

Alan further noted the report’s supposedly reassuring claim that only “a relatively small minority [of Palestinians] has resorted to violence.”And of course, the report blames Israel as the root cause of violence: If there were no occupation,” it claims, “there would be no Palestinian resistance.” The report wants the U.S. to cut off aid “to bring Israel to compliance,” without suggesting U.S. aid reductions to any other human rights abuser, while demanding more dollars for the Palestinian Authority. “Is this prophetic truth-telling?” Alan asked of his fellow Presbyterians. His full analysis of the report is here.

Early reports suggest Presbyterians will tone down the report somewhat, more explicitly affirming Israel’s right to existence and deleting some of the harsher anti-Israel rhetoric. A final vote by the General Assembly should come late this week.

Even if moderated, the Presbyterians Middle East Study Report still illustrates the Religious Left’s almost psychopathic preoccupation with Israel. There are evidently no proposed church study committees on abysmal human rights abuses and civil strife in Iran, or Saudi Arabia, or Syria. Only Israel merits special attention. Would Presbyterians and so many others be so closely examining Israeli faults if Israel were not primarily Jewish and pro-American? Almost certainly not.

Arrow How MUSLIM IMMIGRATION and liberal multiculturalism have destroyed Detroit

As the Muslims moved in, the whites moved out. As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike and total separation from America.

Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan, paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk out rates reached 76 percent last June according to NBC’s Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50 percent illiteracy rate and growing. Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city.

Tens of thousands and then, hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing and food stamps! – all on American taxpayer dollars.“If Detroit had been savaged by a hurricane and submerged by a ravenous flood, we’d know a lot more about it,” said Daniel Okrent. “If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we’d see it on the evening news every night.

“By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit’s treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services,” Okrent said. “The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers’ union to reject a philanthropist’s offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That’s worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.”

Muslim footbaths in public places in Michigan

The auto industry won’t come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit—thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America. If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit. Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.

You have already seen it in the Madrid, Spain, London, England and Paris, France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying.

Multiculturalism: what a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.News with Views

Exclamation Woefully Ignorant or Willfully Misleading? »

Woefully Ignorant or Willfully Misleading?
Peter Beinart's warped understanding of Israel
by Dr. Martin Sherman

In a polemic published last month in the New York Review of Books, “The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment,” the left-wing journalist Peter Beinart argued that American Jews, especially the younger generation, are turning their backs on Israel. In Beinart’s estimation, this is a most welcome development. Beinart expounded on the points of his original essay during a recent lecture at Los Angeles’s Temple Beth. Just as in the original article, Beinart’s argument was profoundly flawed.

For anyone with a modicum of knowledge of Israeli society and the larger picture of the Middle East, the lecture was an astonishing display of ignorance and arrogance. The following analysis of the lowlights of his talk shows how Beinart, like other Israel-bashers, rides roughshod over the truth in an effort to portray Israel as violent and inhumane and deserving of the increasing suspicion in which it is held by American Jews.

The “Radical Settlers”
Beinart stated as a matter of fact: “The same radical settlers who used violence against Palestinians used violence against an Israeli prime minister [Rabin].”

Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin was not assassinated by a “radical settler,” but by a law student from Herzilya, a coastal town adjacent to Tel Aviv.
Beinart gave no evidence in this part of his talk that he knew what percentage of the settlers were involved in violence against Palestinians. Or who has been subject to greater and more lethal violence. Is it Palestinians by settlers? Or settlers by Palestinians?

Nor did he mention that Palestinian movements have proven all too ready to use violence. Not only is this violence directed toward “radical settlers” and innocent Israeli citizens, but Palestinians have also embarked on a frenzy of fratricidal fury against themselves.

The Eviction of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah Quarter in East Jerusalem

On this matter, Beinart posed this rhetorical question:
Is what is happening in Sheik Jarrah, where Palestinians who were living in their homes for 50 years were forcibly evicted and are now living in the street, “kosher”?
This mirrors his claim in his New York Review of Books article that:
[In] the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, … a Palestinian family named the Ghawis lives on the street outside their home of fifty-three years, from which they were evicted to make room for Jewish settlers.
In fact, the Palestinians’ eviction was not a politically motivated initiative to dispossess hapless, helpless Palestinians as Beinart implies, but the result of a court ruling.

The courts (including the Israeli Supreme Court, which often — indeed more often than not — rules against the “radical settlers”) determined that the property in which the Palestinians were living in fact belonged to Jewish owners. In 1967, the court awarded the Palestinian families “protected tenant” status, whose right to reside in the homes was guaranteed as long as they paid rent to the legal owners.

In 1982, the legal owners sued 23 families for nonpayment of rent.

According to an agreement reached between the lawyer representing the Palestinian families and the authorized representatives of the owners, the Palestinian families were indeed recognized as “protected tenants” whose occupancy in the buildings was ensured as long as they paid rent. However, most of the families refused to do so.

Does Beinart believe that Israel would be looked on more favorably if the rule of law was flouted, and legal property rights violated because of the ethnic identity of those ruled against?

Pikuch Nefesh and Reverence for Life Over Land
Beinart lamented:
One of the things that bothers me is [the undermining of] the great reverence for Pikuach Nefesh [preserving lives] and the recognition that it is acceptable to withdraw from land if it meant saving lives.
This is a statement that can only be explained by either total ignorance or total insincerity. For as anyone who follows the news or reads the papers must know, a dramatic inverse relationship exists between Pikuach Nefesh (preserving lives) and withdrawal from land.

Indeed, since the doctrine of “land-for-peace” was introduced into Israeli policy, fatalities have soared to unprecedented levels on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides. To suggest otherwise reflects a massive deficit of either information or integrity.

Double Standards
Regarding the conduct of his like-minded Israel-basher peers, Beinart pontificated: “There is something frankly silly to me about a Jewish community that feels so self-confident in how our values apply in Bosnia, the former Soviet Union, and Darfur, but is so timid in talking about how our values apply in the place we care about most [presumably Israel].” So Israel’s attempts to defend its people are morally comparable to the wholesale slaughter in Darfur, the widespread massacres in Bosnia, and the oppressive brutality of the Soviet regime?

What a windfall for the assorted collection of Jew-baiting anti-Semites, Judeo-phobic Israel-bashers, and other hate-driven villains such thinking is. What greater endorsement could they hope for than Beinart’s exhortation that his fellow Jews relate to the Jewish State as if it were governed by the genocidal Janjaweed militias in Sudan, or by the brutish guards in the Siberian gulags, or the murderous perpetrators of the bloody events in Srebrenica.

Double Standards II
Beinart endorses double standards when they work to Israel’s detriment, and only dismisses them when they do not.

When a challenge was raised regarding the application of these double standards, Beinart’s rather glib and unoriginal response was to claim that while Israel was “far morally superior to North Korea, Syria, Libya and Iran,” these were not relevant criteria he would expect from a Jewish state. According to Beinart, he should not have to “compromise [his expectations from Israel] just because North Korea is worse.”

Such an approach might have some merit if Israel was being censured less severely, or even equally severely, for violations of liberal-democratic values similarto those perpetrated by North Korea, Iran, etc. But what is happening is altogether different. Israel is being censured far more harshly and frequently for infringements much less notable than those glossed over by the international community when committed by other nations.
Moreover, it is not only in comparison to the tyrannies in Tehran and Tripoli and the dictatorships in Damascus and the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) that Israel is being held to a double standard. Indeed, widely divergent criteria are used to judge the actions of Israel and those of the leading democratic countries that comprise NATO. This is true both with respect to military action in the Balkans and the “War on Terror” in Afghanistan.

In the Balkans, high-altitude bombing by NATO, including the use of cluster bombs, inflicted hundreds of civilian Serbian casualties during a military campaign in which not one single civilian in a NATO nation was ever threatened.

In Afghanistan, where military action was undertaken in response to a single terror attack on a single NATO member, estimates of civilian deaths caused directly by NATO military action since 2001 are in the range of 5000-8000, with additional indirect fatalities estimated at up to 20,000.
Why should the victims of Israeli actions taken to defend their citizens elicit a far greater expression of moral outrage on the part of the international community than actions taken to perpetuate regimes in East Asia, Central Africa, or in the Middle East?

Why should several families evicted because of failure to pay rent, after being afforded due process by the Israeli legal system, be more troubling to liberal Jews than the millions of victims of gender apartheid, creed apartheid, and gay apartheid across the Islamic world?

Israel’s Right to Defend Itself
Beinart magnanimously agrees that “to ask Israel to be willing to not defend itself would be wrong,” but predictably goes on to ask – rhetorically – “is every military action…does every Israeli policy contribute to Israeli defense..?”

To be sure, with the benefit of hindsight, some Israeli security measures may be criticized for one reason or another. But in a situation of such uncertainty, what would Beinart recommend as Israel’s working security policy: To err on the side of sober caution? Or on the side of reckless optimism?

Nothing could imperil liberal democratic values more than trying to foist on Israel unattainable standards of liberal democratic ideals that make the defense of these ideals impossible. These standards are not demanded or expected of any other country, much less from one faced with such grave existential threats.

Of course no one is disputing Beinart’s right to criticize Israeli policy. However, as someone who has chosen not to share the burden of living in Israel, he would surely understand that when he states that “as a Jew, I have a certain set of expectations… as to what a Jewish state might be,” some might interpret his approach as being more than a little presumptuous.

Indeed, it would be interesting to know what kind of Israeli military actions Beinart would condone as not offensive to his liberal sensibilities. Would they include the construction of the much maligned separation barrier? Targeted killings (with the lowest level of collateral casualties in military history)? Large scale campaigns (such as “Cast Lead”) to quell rocket and mortar fire on civilian populations?

Blockades and Balance
Beinart asks: “How did the Gaza blockade which banned a vast, vast number of consumer products that had nothing to do with making rockets…help Israeli security?” He added, ”It seems to me that all it did was lead to more and more and more hatred of Israel.”

Can Beinart really be unaware of the fact that the imposition of the blockade was a result of, not a reason for, Palestinian enmity; that it is a consequence, not a cause, of Palestinian hatred for Israel?

Is he really ignorant of the fact that whenever Israel has turned the other cheek, it has been resoundingly slapped by the Palestinians; that whenever Israel extended the hand of friendship, it has been brusquely brushed aside by the Palestinians?

Why should Israel be condemned by liberal democrats for imposing a blockade on Gaza, when the international community imposed a UN Security Council-sanctioned blockade against Iraq and its despotic ruler?

Why is the Gaza blockade more reprehensible than the U.S.-led, UN sanctioned Iraqi blockade that caused infant mortality to sky-rocket and banned importation of over 300 items – including painkillers, pencils, hearing aids, musical instruments, and shampoo?

The Ascendancy of Lieberman
Beinart bewailed the strengthening of Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party as evidence of a widening disregard for liberal democratic values in Israel.

However, a far more powerful case can be made to ascribe Lieberman’s electoral success to the dramatic failure of the left-wing’s ”Chamberlainian” program of “land-for- peace” and the consequent disappointment with this disastrous doctrine. It is an approach which, for the past two decades, has wrought nothing but death and destruction on both Jew and Arab alike.

Actually, Beinart’s loathing for Lieberman’s party appears to be based more on hearsay rather than hard facts. After all, Lieberman has not only accepted, at least implicitly, the notion of a two state solution but is in fact offering arguably even more territorial concessions than most left-wing parties.

It is true that this would involve redrawing the 1967 borders in certain places to exclude large population centers of Israeli Arabs. These would then be annexed to the Palestinian Authority. Yet, it is not quite clear why this would be considered odious to anyone who believes that a viable functioning Palestinian state is realistic, as Beinart presumably does.

Indeed, Israeli Arabs continually claim that the dominant Jewish character of Israel is incompatible with their ethno-religious identity and complain that, as a result, they are often subjected to various forms of prejudice and discrimination. So, if one assumes that a viable functioning Palestinian state is indeed feasible, one is compelled to ask, from both a moral and a practical perspective, why would Israeli Arabs not leap at the chance of being extricated from the clutches of the discriminatory Zionist regime and brought under the auspices of an egalitarian non-discriminatory Palestinian one?

As this would not involve the physical displacement of a single Israeli Arab from his/her home, what possible liberal democratic principle would Beinart invoke to object to such a proposal?

The Sentiments of Israeli Arab
Beinart’s contention is that Israel Arabs object to this arrangement of annexation to the Palestinian Authority because “they consider themselves Israeli.” But this has a rather suspicious ring to it. Is Beinart seriously suggesting that that Israeli Arabs “feel Israeli” in the sense they identify with: the words of the national anthem Hatikva – expressing 2000 years of yearning by the Jewish soul to be free in the land of Zion; the Star of David displayed on the flag; the biblical Menorah as the State symbol; Saturday rather than Friday as the official Sabbath; Yom Kippur Passover, Rosh Ha’Shana as national holidays; Hebrew as the predominant language; or Independence Day as a triumph over Arab aggression?

And if not, how is it possible to make them, as he suggests, “feel more comfortable in their Israeliness”? To annul the Jewish character of Israel as expressed by the prevalence of Jewish symbolism in public life and Israel’s social institutions?

Beinart is of course right that Israeli Arabs strongly object to their annexation to the Palestinian Authority, but wrong in ascribing this aversion to a desire to become more fully integrated into the fabric of Israel. A more plausible explanation would be the desire of Israeli Arabs to continue enjoying the best of both worlds: the benefits of greater economic prosperity and personal freedom that life as an Israeli citizen affords them, and also the expression of their ethno-religious identity through an ongoing and intensifying hostility toward the entity that provides them these benefits.

Beinart’s attempt to demonstrate Israeli Arabs’ attachment to Israel seems curiously contradictory. He quotes a poll allegedly conducted in 2006 during the Second Lebanon War, and proclaims that “when they polled Israeli Arabs, they found that by a factor of about 3 to 1 they supported Israel [rather than the Hezbollah.]“ Although several hours of Google-searching failed to produce any trace of such a poll, I have no reason to doubt that it may in fact exist.

Other survey results that are extremely difficult to reconcile with Beinart’s contention regarding the sentiments of Israeli Arabs for their country of residence. A 2007 poll conducted by Haifa University’s Sami Smooha, a well-known sociologist of well-known left-leaning proclivities, found that:
  • 48.2% of Arab citizens of Israel said they believed that Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on northern Israel during that war were justified;
  • 76% of Arab citizens of Israel described Zionism as racist;
  • 40.5% of Arab citizens of Israel deny the Holocaust; among high school and college graduates the figure was 33%.
A later poll by Smooha produced arguably even more disturbing results:
  • Only 41 percent of Israel’s Arab minority recognize the country’s right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state;
  • Only 53.7 percent of the Israeli Arab public believe Israel has a right to exist as an independent country – Jewish or otherwise.
So, almost 60% do not recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, and almost half deny Israel any right of existence at all. Was Beinart, who made no reference at all to these findings, unaware of their existence? If not, then he is surely woefully ignorant. If so, then he is clearly willfully misleading.

The Nuclear Threat
While Beinart acknowledges that “an Iranian nuclear weapon would be a disaster,” he goes on to expose a massive misunderstanding of the threat Israel would face if Tehran in fact realized its nuclear ambitions. He merely proclaims that in such a case “Israel would have to deal with some of the things [as India] with Pakistan on its borders, and that has a nuclear weapon.”

This comparison is ludicrous. India has a population five times that of Pakistan spread over an entire subcontinent seven times the size of Pakistan. It is in no danger of annihilation from its impoverished eastern neighbor, even if it were to suffer a surprise first-strike that wiped out several of its population centers. India has – and Pakistan knows it has – absolute first strike survivability and unassailable second strike capability to devastate Pakistan in retaliation.

In stark contrast, Israel has a population less than one tenth and an area one eightieth of Iran’s. Moreover, 80% of Israel’s civilian population live in a narrow coastal strip 8-10 miles wide and 60 miles long, of which much, indeed most, would be wiped out by a single nuclear weapon. This would dramatically undermine the ability of the country to continue to function as a viable national entity. So although Israel allegedly has marine-based second-strike capability and may be able to inflict devastating retaliation, this will not ensure its survival if Iran miscalculates the cost of a first-strike or calculates that it is worth the risk.

It also should be remembered that while Iran has overtly threatened Israel with destruction, this has never been the declared intention of Pakistan regarding India.

Furthermore, with a nuclear Iranian umbrella, terror groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Islamic Jihad, could operate with far greater freedom against Israel. The fear that harsh retaliation may precipitate a nuclear confrontation would make ordinary life in the country untenable.

So, while Benart may be right in pointing out that modern day Israel should not be likened to the powerless, helpless Jews in Europe, this does not mean it is not facing existential threats and genocidal dangers that could precipitate tragedy on the scale of the Holocaust. He should remember that if there is a lesson to be learnt from the Holocaust it is this: it is extremely dangerous to dismiss declared intentions of despots, however delusional they may initially appear.

The Real Failure of the American Jewish Establishment
Beinart is right in diagnosing the failure of the American Jewish establishment. But it is a failure quite different than the one he writes about.

Assuming that Beinart is sincere when he implies that Israel “is the place we care about the most,” then all of the following comprise a catastrophic moral lapse on the part of the American Jewish establishment:
  • The failure to vigorously assert Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens against attacks perpetrated against them just because they are Jewish;
  • The failure to unequivocally repudiate the prevailing custom that portrays every measure Israel undertakes to protect itself as “racist”;
  • The failure to reject the egregious standard by which Palestinian inconvenience is considered more heinous than the threat to Jewish lives;
  • The failure to unambiguously distinguish between the causes and the consequences of Arab antagonism; and
  • The failure to comprehend and support policy imperatives.
Addressing and correcting these failures is a far more urgent, a far more pertinent, and a far more authentic mission than any obsessive tendency to dwell on the imperfections of Israel’s vibrant liberal democracy. Such imperfections are only the product of security driven exigencies and not illiberal, anti-democratic proclivities.

To expect Israel to conduct itself in a manner totally divorced from the exigencies of its environment and totally detached from the nature of its adversaries, is a position that reflects neither moral merit nor political prudence.

It is this that the American Jewish establishment, including its liberal democratic members, needs to understand and to address accordingly – before great tragedy overtakes the Jewish people again.

Arrow Why are the Liberal media so reluctant to blame Islamic terrorism on Islamic terroris

The perpetual blindness and denial on the part of the left wing media regarding the reality of Islamic terror is not new. In fact, it goes as far back as the first attempted World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

YES BUT HOWEVER has uncovered footage of an on-air commentary delivered by John Chancellor, at that time the “dean of anchors” at NBC News. Chancellor, proving that thirty-plus years in the news business doesn’t automatically give a newsman good instincts, was quick to claim that the most likely culprit behind the attack (which killed six and injured over one thousand) was a disgruntled “home grown” nutcase. Chancellor hit all of the mainstream media’s favorite talking points, deriding America as an inherently “violent nation”, and dismissing the likelihood that the blast was in any way terror-related.

Exactly two days later, the FBI arrested a Muslim immigrant who rented a van used in the bombing. That arrest led to the exposure of a large network of Muslim terrorists who planned and carried out the attack.

The Chancellor commentary demonstrates not only a longstanding tradition of denial and ignorance regarding Islamic terrorism, but also the frustrating fact that the media, and many of our political leaders, simply refuse to learn the lessons of history.

In December 1992, two months before the WTC attack, Israel’s then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin issued a plea to the world to open its eyes to the danger of Islamic terror. His words were chillingly prophetic:
“Our struggle against murderous Islamic terror is also meant to awaken the world, which is lying in slumber. We call on all nations, all peoples to devote their attention to the great danger inherent in Islamic fundamentalism. This is a real and serious danger that threatens world peace in future years. And just as Israel was the first to perceive the Iraqi nuclear threat, so today we stand on the line of fire against the danger of fundamentalist Islam.”

And what was the response of the mainstream press to Rabin’s words? A January 2nd article in the Los Angeles Times belittled and ridiculed Rabin’s views (the article was titled “Israel Sees Self Defending West Against Militants,” with the sub-heading “Tel Aviv calls itself the ‘first target’ of Islamic fundamentalists with aims beyond the region.) Critics say such talk ‘demonizes’ a religion.” (But they don’t care if the religion is Christianity)

17 years later, nothing has changed. Following the May 1st discovery of a failed car bomb in New York’s Times Square, the unfounded speculation by most anchors, pundits, and politicians was that the bomb was the work of a lone “domestic terrorist” as typified by the inane exchange between CBS anchor Katie Couric and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in which the latter hypothesized that the would-be bomber was a right-wing “home grown” terrorist who “doesn’t like the health care bill or something”.

Seventeen years, and little has changed regarding the mainstream media’s attitude and response to Islamic terrorism. If the Couric/Bloomberg exchange seemed absurd a month ago, when viewed through the prism of history, it’s absolutely terrifying.

Oliver Stone blames Jews, says Nazis and Ahmadinejad have been misunderstood

http://israelinsider.ning.com/profil...ames-jews-says

Director Oliver Stone downplayed the Holocaust during an interview with the Sunday Times today, claiming that America's focus on the genocide of Jews was a product of the "Jewish domination of the media." The director also defended Hitler and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and railed against the "powerful lobby" of Jews in America.

"Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein. German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support," Stone told reporter Camilla Long during the interview, which can be found behind the paywall on the Sunday Times' website. Stone said that, "Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million killed]."

The Sunday Times interviewer then asked why there was such a focus on the Holocaust. "The Jewish domination of the media," responded Stone. "There's a major lobby in the United States. They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years."

The director, who recently met with Iranian President Ahmadinejad, also slammed the U.S. policy toward Iran as "horrible." He added: "Iran isn't necessarily the good guy, but we don't know the full story!"

Nation columnist who believed Times Square jihadist was from the "far right" whines about my speaking to the FBI
Leftist/Islamic Supremacist Alliance Update: on May 3, Robert Dreyfuss wrote this in The Nation:
It may be that the Pakistan-based Taliban, the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has quietly established a Connecticut franchise while we weren't looking. That's possible. But it seems far more likely to me that the perpetrator of the bungled Times Square bomb plot was either a lone wolf or a member of some squirrely branch of the Tea Party, anti-government far right. Which actually exists in Connecticut, where, it seems, the car's licence plates were stolen.
Of course, the Pakistan Taliban was indeed behind the Times Square bombing attempt, not the far right at all.

You'd think Robert Dreyfuss would be too embarrassed after committing such an ideologically-driven error ever to write about any aspect of the jihad threat again, but some people have no shame. Retract? Apologize? Not the noble Dreyfuss! Instead, he has just dug himself in even deeper, echoing the talking points of Hamas-linked CAIR in complaining about my recent seminars for the FBI and JTTF: "Anti-Muslim Bigot and Fanatic Explains Islam to the FBI and the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force," by Robert Dreyfuss in The Nation, July 26 (thanks to James):
The Council on American Islamic Relations is making noise about the fact that an extremist, right-wing anti-Muslim rabble rouser was "invited to offer training to state and federal law enforcement officers." It sounds like something that might have happened under the administration of President Bush, but no - this happened on Obama's watch. Robert Spencer, co-founder of the group Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), is the culprit.
Even over at the Nation, however, a few of Dreyfuss's commenters were on to him. Some of the remarks were especially apposite:
It's not "fanatical" or "bigoted" to tell the truth. Anyone who can read knows that the Koran sanctions the violent murder of all non-Moslems, especially Jews (even those who deny it). There's no point in maintaining a commitment to evade reality. Spencer is not anti-Moslem or bigoted. He is a man who has devoted his life to studying Islamic theology. He simply doesn't tell lies.
The only reason you defend Islam is because you want it to be peaceful, not because you have any rational reason to believe that it is.
And:
So you rely on a Muslim Brotherhood front group for proof of Spencer being "right wing." How about asking Mr. Spencer yourself? Is "tea partiers" the new incantation to forget about the reality of Obama and the world?
SIOA's response to the CAIR/Dreyfuss screed is here.

Yup, Ollie...maybe we don't. But you do, of course.

That's why we're all waiting for this drunken clown of a loser to make yet another self-indulgent 3-hour boring bomb of a movie so the jerk can tell us in his own inimitable way just what that full story is. After all, with such epic cinematic trailblazers of factual integrity like JFK, Born on the Fourth of July and Alexander, (to name just a few), this certainly is the dude we want to set the ignorant masses straight and lead us into Oliver Stone's version of a promised land of truth, justice and the American way. (Please excuse me while I puke.)

Stone, you're nothing but a pathetic maggot and I despise you...fellow veteran or not.

No words can express my disgust with Oliver Stone right now. No words allowed on this forum anyway.
