Exclamation American Al-Qaeda »

American Al-Qaeda
How did Samir Khan board a flight to Yemen?
by Ryan Mauro

The U.S. now believes that Samir Khan, a 24-year old that operated a pro-terrorist website from North Carolina, is in Yemen and acting as the editor of Al-Qaeda’s new online English magazine, Inspire. Khan had a well-known history of terrorist sympathizes that begs the question of how he was permitted to board a flight to Yemen and join the terrorist group he publicly admired.

Khan was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Queens, New York City when he was seven years old. As a teenager, he attended a camp run by a group called the Islamic Organization of North America, which the Anti-Defamation League describes as “the North American branch of a radical anti-Semitic and anti-American Pakistani organization, Tanzeem-e-Islami.” The IONA’s website admits its links to Tanzeem-e-Islami. The IONA also had the leader of the Islamic Circle of North America, a group tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and Jamaat-e-Islami, give the keynote speech at its 2004 conference. The group also sells a book called “The End of Democracy.”

At this time, Khan became a more devout Muslim but distanced himself from IONA because they weren’t extreme enough. The issue that broke the relationship was violent jihad. Khan felt Muslims could wage jihad on their own accord, whereas IONA said it had to be approved by the leader of a Muslim nation. Khan left the group and began participating in meetings with the Islamic Thinkers Society, an extremist group with ties to an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the United Kingdom called al-Muhajiroun.

In 2004, Khan and his family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he began an Internet blog under the name of “Inshallahshaheed,” which means “A martyr soon if Allah wills.” He later moved his blog to Revolution.Muslimpad.com. He received significant media attention for his praise of Osama Bin Laden and terrorist attacks, listing Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as “scholars of Islam” and linking to English translation of pro-terrorist sermons.

“America needs to listen to Shaykh Usaamah very carefully and take his message with great seriousness,” he wrote. He openly preached violent jihad in English and linked to radical Islamic websites where terrorists posted their videos of attacks on Coalition forces in Iraq. He also supported attacks on Muslims, praising a suicide bomber that struck an Iraqi police station as a “success story.”

Many of the videos he promoted were produced by the Islamic State of Iraq, an umbrella group that included Al-Qaeda. In some cases, Khan commented on the videos. In one posting containing footage of a battle in Afghanistan, Khan wrote, “You can even see an American soldier hiding during the ambush like a baby! AllahuAkbar! AllahuAkbar!”

Khan also condemned democracy and non-Muslims.

“Islam denounces democracy, Islam denounces Christians and Jews, Islam denounces the corruption of the disbelievers upon the earth, and Islam is coming to crush the armies of disbelief and smash the false government and religions of the world to bring humanity from darkness into light,” he wrote.

The blog was also used to post death threats. He asked Allah to “kill” Rusty Shackleford, the operator of the Editor-in-Chief of the My Pet Jawa blog, and “terrorize his family.” He also prayed that Allah would break the hands and poison the tongue of Robert Spencer of JihadWatch.org.

“Some of you seem to have a misunderstanding regarding my intentions. I did not preach that we must slaughter every single non-Muslim for the purpose of them being non-Muslim. Rather, I have been repeatedly stating that we, as Muslims, are obligated to hate you for the sake of Allah because the fact is that you are non-Muslim…” Khanwrote in 2006 in his letter to Spencer.

Despite his very public history of support for terrorism, Khan was able to board a flight from the United States to Yemen in 2009. The Al-Qaeda branch there has since put out an English magazine on the Internet named Inspire. The first issue is almost 70 pages long and has directions on how to encrypt messages and produce bombs in a kitchen. It also includes an interview with Anwar al-Awlaki, a former imam in the U.S. that is a rising star in the terrorist world. Khan is now believed to be the editor of that magazine.

It is well-known that al-Awlaki had a major Internet presence and was actively trying to recruit Americans from Yemen. A Senate report revealed in February that up to three dozen American prison converts are now in Yemen and likely working with al-Awlaki’s branch of Al-Qaeda. His sermons are inspiring many terrorists in the West. Terrorism expert Evan Kohlmann says al-Awlaki’s appear “to surface in every single homegrown terrorism investigation, whether in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, or beyond.”

“Whether what he was doing then constituted illegal activity is open to question…but apparently not to the extent that the authorities felt it necessary to take him in or put him on the No Fly List,” James Robbins, executive director of the American Security Council Foundation and author of This Time We Win: Revisiting the Tet Offensive told FrontPage.

“[The authorities were] simply not taking him seriously…He was a kid literally blogging from his parents’ house in Charlotte, North Carolina,” he continued.

As two American sympathizers of Al-Qaeda adept at using the Internet, it should have been assumed that they were trying to link up and a trip by Khan to Yemen would be for this purpose. Yet, despite Khan’s pro-terrorist activity, he was apparently not placed on the No-Fly List and was able to make a trip to Yemen that was extremely likely to be terrorism-related. Based on this error, it is clear that significant gaps still exist in our defenses. If a well-known supporter of Al-Qaeda is able to board a flight to a country known to be used to recruit Americans for Al-Qaeda, then the U.S. is far more vulnerable than most people think.

Canada: Islamic jihadist jailed for nuclear exports to Iran

No doubt it was all nuclear material of peace. "Canada jails man for nuclear exports to Iran," from al-Arabiya, July 30:
A Canadian man convicted of trying to send nuclear technology to his native Iran has been sentenced to 20 months in prison.

In addition to his 20 months in jail, the Ontario Court of Justice sentenced Mahmoud Yadegar to another 15.5 months of pre-sentence custody, Canada's public prosecution service said in a statement.

"Because the court granted double credit for pre-sentence custody, this amounts to a four-year, three-month sentence," the statement read.

He was found guilty on July 6 of nine out of 10 charges, including offences under the Customs Act, the United Nations Act, and the Criminal Code

Prosecutors were seeking 6.5 years prison for Yadegari, 37, who was born in Iran but has been living in Canada since 1988.

On March 4, 2009, Yadegari "attempted to export controlled material to Iran" via Dubai, read the statement.

"The goods, known as pressure transducers, are subject to a United Nations embargo on nuclear-related exports to Iran."

The items, it said, "are also on Canada's Export Control List."...

Arrow Here we go: Murfreesboro mega-mosque under investigation over burial

Here we go: Murfreesboro mega-mosque under investigation over burial

An update on this story. The nature of the interaction with mosque officials is entirely too typical: When approached about specifics, respond with lofty generalities; repeat as necessary, and people who still won't back down are automatically Islamophobes, naturally. "Sheriff's office to probe Islamic burial," by Mark Bell for DNJ.com, July 30:
Rutherford County's Sheriff's Office will investigate questions regarding a burial at the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro's new site on Veals Road.
Maj. Chuck Thomas told The Daily News Journal on Thursday that the office will "look into some concerns that were brought to our attention."
A group of about two dozen people requested an investigation in a letter and petition presented to Sheriff Truman Jones earlier this week.
"Who is it that's buried here?" group spokesperson Laurie Cardoza-Moore said in a press conference Thursday. "Is it a child? Is it an adult? Is it male or female? There are environmental issues. Was there a casket used?"
The group is also concerned about the burial permit that was issued by the Rutherford County Planning Department.
Cardoza-Moore said the permit was approved for one person to be buried on the site, notarized and dated May 18. But, the group claims the body was buried before that permit was even approved.
"It's our understanding the burial took place on the 17th," said Cardoza-Moore.
Murfreesboro Police have said they gave a funeral escort to the site on May 19, the day after the permit was issued.
Thomas said the sheriff's office will look into the matter.
"We will make sure that the death certificate was obtained and ... that all the laws and rules were followed," Thomas said.
The leader of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, Imam Ossama Bahloul, didn't talk to a WSMV reporter on camera about the issue, but reacted by saying: "We want to be a good neighbor and want to reside in peace."
Body dumps don't build good neighborly relations.
He went on to say, "We wish everyone in the city the very best."
That's swell, but again, how 'bout that burial issue?
Islamic leaders had applied for a conditional use permit for a full cemetery on site, but later withdrew that request....
So is it just kind of a cemetery? Half a cemetery? A hemi-demi-semi-cemetery?

Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood front group sponsoring interfaith events at Boy Scouts National Jamboree

ISNA has admitted ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. The Muslim Brotherhood is waging, in its own words, "a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Allah's religion is made victorious over all other religions."

And now this thuggish, deceptive, unsavory group is sponsoring events for the Boy Scouts. "ISNA and ADAMS Co-Sponsor Islamic Scouting and Inter-faith Events at Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree," from ISNA.net, July 28:
(Fort A. P. Hill, VA - July 28, 2010) The Islamic Society of North America, in partnership with the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) and the National Council on Islamic Scouting (NCIS) will join fellow Scouts and leaders at the 18th National Scout Jamboree which will be held from July 26 through August 4, 2010, at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia, located near Fredericksburg and Washington D.C. in celebration of the first century of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

"Every Scout should have religion. Religion seems a very simple thing: First: Love and serve God. Second: Love and serve your neighbor," said BSA founder Robert Baden-Powell.

ISNA and ADAMS will be co-sponsoring interfaith events which will be held during the jamboree. Imam Izak-EL Mu'eed Pasha, Resident Imam of Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, NICS member, will deliver the sermon and lead prayers at the Islamic congregational services on Friday, July 30th at 1pm.

Interfaith prayer services will be led by Rizwan Jaka, ADAMS/ISNA/IFCMW Board Member and ADAMS Scouts Chartered Organization Representative, on Sunday, August 1st, at 10:30am.

Participants include Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and various other faith leaders and Scouts. Reverend Clark Lobenstine, Executive Director of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington (IFCMW) will be the special guest during the service....

Default Air Security to Exempt Muslim Women from Proving Identity

OTTAWA – Frequent flyers know the drill: take off your shoes, surrender your tweezers and pack your shampoo in those little plastic baggies before lining up for the naked body scanners. But lift your niqab? Apparently not.

QMI Agency can reveal that neither airlines nor security services are asking Muslim women to lift their veils and prove that the face beneath matches their photo ID.

The issue came to light through a video taken by Mick Flynn of Bradford, England. Flynn was boarding a flight at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport when he witnessed two women with their faces covered board an Air Canada Heathrow bound flight without being asked to remove their veils.

In fact, in the video that Flynn has posted online, a man traveling with the group hands in all the passports and is the only one to interact with airline staff while two veiled women simply walk through.

"I complained at the desk — and again as I boarded the plane — asking if the pilot was happy that two women boarded without being identified," Flynn told QMI Agency. "Both members of staff whom I spoke to were flustered and clearly embarrassed."

Flynn’s communication with Air Canada and his video posting have resulted in a threatened lawsuit from the airline. As for answers from the company about security procedures, their response reveals holes in Canada’s air security....

Who is to say that what is under that Niqab is a woman since male terrorists have dressed thus during terror attacks???

Arrow ARAB-AMERICAN MUSEUM to immortalize the ugliest Jew-Hater in America

The Wicked Witch of the Press, HELEN “Jews should get the Hell out of Palestine” THOMAS will be honored with a statue at the Arab-American National Museum in Dearbornistan, MI.

Supporters of the initiative in Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit and the town with the second largest Arab community in the United States, are trying to raise money to have the copper statue constructed and put in the local museum.

But Thomas’ remarks that Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine” and “go home” to Poland and Germany, which abruptly ended her 67-year-career, are not helping the cause.

“There are people who don’t want to donate because of it,” said Anan Ameri, the Arab American National Museum’s director. According to museum sources, some $30,000 is needed to have the statue erected.

Thomas, who will be turning 90 on Wednesday, is a member of the museum’s advisory board, and the museum has launched a 45-day online campaign to gather the remaining $10,000 that is needed to erect the statue, which is being constructed by former news photographer and sculptor Susan McElhinney.

Despite the difficulties in raising funds, unexpected support of the initiative came from President of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit Richard Nodel, who expressed “hope that the support for this memorial is there despite her anti-Israel and anti-Semitic views and not because of them.

Meanwhile several other Jewish leaders are pressuring Wayne State University to remove Helen Thomas’ name from its annual diversity award. YNET NEWS

Chicago:
Misunderstander of Islam arrested for allegedly planning jihad against U.S.

He was planning to gain Paradise by killing and being killed for Allah (cf. Qur'an 9:111). But no worries. I'm sure Honest Ibe Hooper and his Chicago henchman Brave Ahmed Rehab are on the case, already explaining to Shaker Masri how he is Misunderstanding the Religion of Peace.

"Chicago Man Arrested For Allegedly Planning 'Jihad' Against U.S.," from MyStateLine.com, August 4:
(Chicago) -- A 26-year-old Chicago man has been arrested for allegedly planning to join a Somalia-based terror group.
FBI officials say Shaker Masri was taken into custody Tuesday night in Countryside without incident.

He had apparently been planning to join either al-Qaeda or al-Shaaab since at least 2009.

Officials also say Masri was going to commit some type of suicide attack against "infidels." He's currently being held without bond on terrorism-related charges.

Arrow 14 Muslims in Minnesota, Alabama and California charged with aiding jihad group

14 Misunderstanders of Islam in Minnesota, Alabama and California charged with aiding jihad group in Somalia

Which mosques did these jihadis attend? What were they taught in those mosques? Did anything they were taught in those mosques lead them to want to aid al-Shabab? Are any other members of those mosques involved in jihad activity? Does anyone know? Does anyone care?

"Justice Dept.: 14 charged with aiding radical Somali group," by William Branigin for the Washington Post, August 5 (thanks to all who sent this in):
Federal indictments unsealed Thursday in Minnesota, Alabama and California charge 14 people with terrorism offenses for allegedly aiding the radical Islamist al-Shabab organization in Somalia.

In announcing the indictments, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said the charges reflect a disturbing trend in which al-Shabab, which has links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network, has appealed to U.S. citizens of Somali descent to join the group's battle against a weak U.S.-backed transitional government and African Union peacekeeping forces in Somalia.

Holder said there was no direct evidence that al-Shabab is threatening the United States, although a terrorist attack last month in Uganda "gives us pause." Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, in which at least 74 civilians were killed in coordinated bombings at two locations in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, where crowds were watching the World Cup soccer final. Among the victims was an American aid worker from Delaware.

The four separate indictments unsealed Thursday accuse the 14 individuals with providing money, personnel and services to al-Shabab.

Among those charged were Omar Shafik Hammami, 26, a former resident of Daphne, Ala., and Jehad Serwan Mostafa, 28, a former resident of San Diego. Both are U.S. citizens who are believed to be at large in Somalia.

In a news conference, Holder said Hammami "has assumed an operational role" in al-Shabab and has made recruitment videos that have aroused concern at the FBI and in the Somali community in the United States.

The effort to recruit Somali Americans for al-Shabab targets young men "at difficult points in their lives," a U.S. official said....
Of course!

Arrow Hamas-linked CAIR again sides with terror, sues Michigan Police over killing of Detro

Hamas-linked CAIR again sides with terror, sues Michigan Police over killing of Detroit imam who preached "offensive jihad"

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2010/08/ha...-who-prea.html

Last October I wrote this about this case:
According to the indictment, in his mosque in Detroit Luqman Abdullah was preaching "offensive jihad" and the establishment of a Sharia state in North America. This sovereign Isamic state would be ruled by Islamic law - and by the apparent godfather of Abdullah's movement, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. Al-Amin is the former Black Panther and convert to Islam who gained fame under the name H. Rap Brown. Al-Amin is now serving a life sentence for murdering two police officers, while his disciples, like Luqman Abdullah, carry on the message he articulated so memorably in the 1960s: "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down."

In the spirit of his mentor, Abdullah has told his flock: "America must fall." He has encouraged the Muslims in his mosque to support Hizballah, the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. He exhorted them to bestir themselves to pious deeds: "We should be figuring out how to fight the Kuffar" - that is, unbelievers. "We got to take out the U.S. government. The U.S. government is nothing but Kuffars." Among the unbelievers were FBI agents, about whom Abdullah declared:

"Deal with them, deal with them the way, the way they supposed to be dealt with.... It's not that complicated, man....If they are coming to get me I'll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody." A law enforcement official wrote in an affidavit that "Abdullah and his followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting" - in accord with Abdullah's dictum that every Muslim believer should "have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed."

Abdullah found justification for all this in the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, which he said "justified stealing, robbing and other illegal acts, as long as they profit Islam."
And now Hamas-linked CAIR is trying to make this out to be some kind of civil rights case. Has that repulsive gang of thugs, subversives, seditionists and traitors ever seen an anti-terror law or action that they favored? They are consistently trying to hamstring law enforcement efforts against the jihad. Yet the media still for the most part, as in this AP story, gives them a free pass.

"Muslim group sues Michigan State Police over slain imam probe," from the Associated Press, August 5:
DETROIT -- A Muslim civil rights group has sued the Michigan State Police for failing to release information related to the killing of a Detroit mosque leader during a shootout with the FBI.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations' Michigan chapter filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Chapter executive director Dawud Walid said today the state police was part of a task force that conducted raids leading to the death of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah at a Dearborn warehouse in October....

Walid said CAIR plans more lawsuits against other law enforcement agencies.
Oh, I'm sure.

Canadian Council of Muslim Women opposes addition of honor killings to Criminal Code

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2010/08/ca...inal-code.html

Now wait a minute: the mainstream media has told us, whenever an honor killing has taken place in North America or Europe, that honor killing is a cultural practice that has nothing to do with Islam -- despite the fact that Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide. What's more, a manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law. Nonetheless, the media drumbeat is constant: honor killings have nothing to do with Islam. And so if honor killings have nothing to do with Islam, why should the Canadian Council of Muslim Women think that a law against honor killing have anything to do with them?

"Muslim women's group opposes addition of honour killings to Criminal Code," by Juliet O'Neill for Postmedia News, August 5:
OTTAWA -- The Canadian Council of Muslim Women opposes the addition of "honour killings" to the Criminal Code on the grounds "murder is murder" and a special category could stigmatize new immigrants and some ethnic or religious groups....

"We as an organization don't want the term honour killing used in Canada because it's making it exotic, something alien, and foreign, and people are using that as a rationale to understand the murders," said Alia Hogben, a social worker and executive director of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, a national non-profit voluntary organization.

"Let's not go that route. A murder is a murder. Let's not separate us as new immigrants or ethnic groups from the rest of Canadian women. It doesn't matter which culture, which religion or which ethnic origin we come from, the same laws should apply to us."

Law professors Isabel Grant of the University of British Columbia, Debra Parkes of the University of Manitoba and Elizabeth Sheehy of the University of Ottawa all said the Criminal Code already contains tools to deal with "honour killings" and said it would be difficult to define it in law....

Sheehy said creation of a separate crime would embed in the law the erroneous notion that murders of wives and daughters only happens in minority groups.

"It would be racializing the crime to consider honour killing as a different form of murder," she said.

In response to public outrage, Grant said governments have a record of adding to the kinds of murders -- related to stalking, terrorism, and organized crime for example -- that must be considered first-degree murder.

But in this case she wondered how it would be defined.

"How would you draft one that wasn't discriminatory against certain ethnic communities?" she asked. "I think that would be really tricky."...
Why? What does this have to do with ethnicity at all? Islam is not a race, and in any case, an honor killing law doesn't have to make any mention of Islam at all. But I have an idea for how Canada can formulate an honor killing that doesn't "discriminate" against "certain ethnic communities."

Syria recently scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but "the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour 'provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.'" And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that "Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values."

So Canadian lawmakers can simply study the Syrian and Jordanian laws that mandate relaxed penalties for honor killings as compared to other murders, and formulate their own honor killing law based on the definitions made in those legal codes as to what constitutes an honor killing.

And as a lagniappe, since the new Canadian law would be modeled after the Syrian and Jordanian codes, no one could legitimately charge Canada with "discriminating" against any particular "ethnic community" by legislating against honor killing.

Problem solved!

Arrow CAIR: “We are sick and tired of having to condemn Islamic terrorism every day”

Yesterday was a day that will live in infamy. New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously cleared the way for the construction of the symbolically-named Cordoba House, commonly known as the Ground Zero mega-mosque. It is scheduled for a grand opening on (or groundbreaking) – on the 10th anniversary of the al Qaeda attacks of 9/11.

Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly discussed it with Nihad Awad, executive director and co-founder of the ubiquitous public relations bullhorn and Muslim Brotherhood offshoot CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations. O’Reilly pressed Awad about the lack of sensitivity being shown to the 9/11 victims’ families by the planned mega-mosque, which will loom over the ruins of the World Trade Center.

Awad replied that the Muslim-American community has repeatedly denounced terrorism and the 9/11 hijackers. And then he let loose with this eyebrow-raising, irritable and defensive remark:
“We are sick and tired of condemning these people every day, in and out.”
Yes, it must be exhausting, constantly having to distance yourself from your violent co-religionists. Year in, year out, having to separate the “Islamic” from “Islamic terrorism,” a task made Sisyphean thanks to the relentless worldwide onslaught of jihadists who inconveniently insist on committing their mayhem in the name of Islam.Nonetheless, Awad soldiered on, insisting that:
“There is no linkage between our community, our faith, and 9/11.”

I see. Well, the terrorists themselves beg to differ – as do Americans who have educated themselves about Islam since 9/11, and who are sick and tired of being reassured that it means peace, and that global jihad and the imposition of sharia have nothing to do with religion.
Claiming that the charge of “insensitivity is a smokescreen for bigotry,” Awad sidestepped O’Reilly’s questions to get to his main talking point: an attack on Pamela Geller, the organizer of the mosque’s opposition. In a McCarthyesque gesture, he held up a printout of what he said was a defamatory illustration of his prophet Muhammed taken from Geller’s website – as if this somehow invalidates all the legitimate complaints and questions about the mosque’s inappropriateness, true purpose, and funding. O’Reilly rightfully shut Awad down before he could smear Geller any further.

Awad then backtracked to show a list of 9/11 families who support the mosque, but by then O’Reilly had given up on him.

Mega-mosque apologists claim that its erection is an interfaith gesture that will not only heal the wounds inflicted on 9/11, but will prove America’s capacity for tolerance and religious freedom. Why is the burden on us? Americans are constantly being asked to demonstrate our tolerance, to prove we aren’t bigoted, racist or Islamophobic. We have nothing to prove. We already have the most fair-minded, religiously tolerant, inclusive society in the history of the world. We were the ones attacked on 9/11. We continue to be attacked. By fundamentalist Muslims.

No more. From now on the burden must be on the other side. If Nihad Awad and the Ground Zero mosque developers truly want to begin the healing, they can start by abandoning the project rather than by reopening the painful wounds of Ground Zero. Real News Blog

http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/muslim-college-whose-founder-encouraged-hijacking-of-the-82nd-airborne-to-open-soon-in-berkeley-ca/

Just what this country needs, even more pro-Shari’a Muslims. In this latest Islamization of America move, Zaytuna College in BERKELY, CA (where else?) is offering only two majors: Arabic language and Islamic (Shari’a) Law and Theology.

VOA NEWS
Zaytuna College is a new four-year college in Berkeley, California. Zaytuna is seeking to become the first accredited Muslim college in the United States.

Imam Zaid Shakir is a professor and co-founder of Zaytuna. He was born in Berkeley. There are millions of American Muslims. But the imam says most of the teachers of Islam in America received their training in other countries. He says,
ISLAM HAS NEVER BEEN ROOTEDin a particular land until that land began producing its own religious scholars. There are several million Muslims in the United States and rapidly growing Muslim populations in Canada, Great Britain, and Western Europe. Yet, there are no accredited academic institutions capable of training students in the varied sciences of Islam. Clearly, there is an essential need for Muslim institutions that can wed Islam’s classical texts with the contemporary context.”

We believe Zaytuna College has an important contribution to make in the indigenization of Islam in the West. An indigenized Islam is of particular significance at this time when there is so much suspicion directed toward Muslims as illegitimate “outsiders,” while at the same time a demonstrated desire on the part of many in the West, especially in America, to create a more open, multicultural, and tolerant society.

God willing, a Zaytuna College education will prepare students for a meaningful life as compassionate, productive, and educated citizens of the global community who understand Islam as a living, viable, and relevant faith, and who represent that faith with dignity, wisdom, and honor.

Creeping Sharia Zaytuna held its first classes this summer — intensive study of Arabic to prepare for classes in the fall. Men and women sat on opposite sides of the auditorium. Most of the men had beards and wore skull caps. Most of the women covered their hair with scarves.

Zaid Shakir wants Islam rooted in the land (the U.S.) like it has been rooted in other countries that Islam has conquered. Since every country where Islam is now dominant has been conquered by Islamic jihad. Shakir is a proponent of jihad, as WND noted, Zaid Shakir Exhorts Islamic faithful to target planes carrying ’82nd Airborne’:

Radical Islamic cleric Zaid Shakir, a frequent guest speaker at CAIR events, tells his Muslim audiences: “Jihad is physically fighting the enemies of Islam to protect and advance the religion of Islam. This is jihad.”

Acceptable targets of jihad, he says, include U.S. military aircraft.
“Islam doesn’t permit us to hijack airplanes filled with civilian people,” Shakir once told a Muslim audience. However, If you hijack an airplane filled with the 82nd Airborne, that’s something else.”

The 82nd Airborne Division’s elite paratroopers fly out of Fort Bragg, N.C., which is part of North Carolina state Sen. Larry Shaw’s district. Shaw is CAIR’s new chairman.
“For ten years, Zaytuna has played a key role in helping the Muslim American community rediscover much of the beauty and wisdom of traditional Islam. We look forward to the growth and expansion of Zaytuna’s services so it can further explore and implement, in partnership with other Muslims, the best of this classical heritage in a complex, pluralistic society.” –Dr. Ingrid Mattson President, MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD-linked Islamic Society of North America

Arrow Doug Giles to CAIR top dog:Are you going to demand a Nidal Malik Hasan Avenue

Doug Giles to CAIR top dog: "What's next, Awad? Are you going to demand a Nidal Malik Hasan Avenue on Ft. Hood's military base?"

Doug Giles addresses Islamic supremacist thug Nihad Awad, CAIR's cofounder and executive director, in "The Separation Between Muslims and Taste," August 8:
Building a mosque at Ground Zero is like OJ's mom putting a glamour shot of Orenthal over Nicole Brown's gravestone. In other words, it's very wrong and extremely disgusting, as every person with a lick of decency would agree.

What's next, Awad? Are you going to demand a Nidal Malik Hasan Avenue on Ft. Hood's military base? What about an Abdulmutallab Upgrade Package on Northwest Airlines?...

Arrow Finally! Some good news about terrorist front group CAIR

http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/...nt-group-cair/

Suddenly, CAIR has become a political HOT POTATO in the world of mid-term election campaigning.

ISLAMIST WATCH In a perfect world, the terrorist ties and Islamist agendaof the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) would render it politically untouchable, with candidates for office shunning the organization and chastising those rare opponents who back it. Controversies from two ongoing election campaigns offer provocative hints that such a world may be closer to reality.

First, Kevin Calvey, a Republican running for one of Oklahoma’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, proudlyrefused a $25 personal donation from CAIR’s statewide executive director Razi Hashmi.

Kevin Calvey

Why? Because Calvey has taken the time to educate himself about the group’s history, such as its status as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial, in which five defendants — including an original board member of CAIR’s Texas chapter — were convicted of funneling money to Hamas. Calvey summarized his views of CAIR in this refreshingly blunt manner:
“I haven’t met with them, nor will I”. oklahoma-congressional-candidate-says-cair-is-the-moral-equivalent-of-the-ku-klux-klan

Hashmi, who was last seen at Islamist Watch parsing the free speech rights of apostates, replied by playing the bigotry card: “He touts this as a crusade against CAIR, but everybody knows it’s anti-Muslim. (Actually it IS!)

Second, CAIR has arisen as an issue in Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race. As Daniel Pipes chronicles, Democratic candidate Joe Sestak, currently a congressman, is being hammered for hiring a local CAIR leader as an aide and appearing at a 2007 Philadelphia fundraiser for the group.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT 2007 CAIR FUNDRAISER – Rep. Joe Sestak

Senator Arlen Specter got the ball rolling months ago with aletter slamming his ultimately victorious primary opponent for having “gone out of his way to speak at a fundraising dinner” for CAIR.

Next, the Emergency Committee for Israel started running a video ad against Sestak, stating that he “raised money for an anti-Israel organization the FBI called a front group for Hamas.”

The effort has escalated with an advertisement in the Philadelphia-area Jewish Exponent titled Rep. Joe Sestak hired leader of terror-linked group.” The congressman’s response:
demanding that Comcast no longer carry the Emergency Committee’s TV spot and attempting tospin his role at the CAIR banquet.

A number of public officials, including Democraticsenators, have stepped forward tocensure CAIR in recent years.

However, the harsh criticism levied against it in 2010 political campaigns represents a new and welcome phenomenon that reflects the group’s growing toxicity — and promises to increase it. After all, ads invoking the organization’s radicalism and op-edssparringover it in the Philadelphia Inquirer will help thousands of people learn about CAIR for the first time. And, more often than not, to know CAIR is to dislike it.

Bad news for Islamists. Good news for America.

Exclamation Jesse Jackson working with CAIR to attack Robert Spencer & Jihad Watch?

Jesse Jackson working with CAIR to attack Robert Spencer & Jihad Watch?

After Hamas-linked CAIR has enlisted that noted apostle of sensitivity and mutual respect, Jesse "Hymietown" Jackson, in its latest (and most frenzied) smear campaign against me, Roger L. Simon and Andrew C. McCarthy weigh in:

From "Real Blog War: CAIR Goes After Robert Spencer," by Roger L. Simon at Pajamas Media, August 9:
Actually, I apologize for making a joke about something that is far more serious than that. As has been detailed here and on PJTV, our own government has banned the use of the very Islamic terminology whose doctrine and provenance Spencer had the bravery to explain to those FBI agents. He told me on the phone that the agents received him well too. That's good news.

CAIR, not surprisingly, doesn't see it my way. To them, Spencer -- and all of those who are trying to educate us about the dangers of jihadism -- is anathema. They have written FBI Director Robert Mueller to demand an explanation why such a man -- the member of a "hate group" -- had been allowed to speak to FBI agents and to receive the director's assurance that such a horrible thing would never happen again. In keeping with our contemporary fixation, they want Mueller to apologize. CAIR has even enlisted that noted expert on Islamic studies, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, in their cause. (I know. You're shocked.)
From "Director Mueller, Say No to CAIR," by Andrew C. McCarthy in National Review, August 10:
At this point, the question about CAIR should be: Why does anyone care? Care about anything CAIR officials say, that is. The notorious Council on American-Islamic Relations is back up to its old tricks. CAIR officials figure our ten-minute attention span has lapsed, and that we've probably forgotten by now that, in the 2007-08 prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) -- a case in which several Islamists were convicted in a scheme that poured millions of dollars into the coffers of the terrorist organization Hamas -- CAIR was named as, and shown to be, an unindicted co-conspirator. CAIR reckons that the heat is off, so it's back on the "Islamophobia" soapbox, demanding an apology from FBI director Robert Mueller.

An apology for what? The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Forces had the temerity to invite Robert Spencer -- one of the nation's leading experts on Islamist ideology -- to lecture federal agents on Islamist ideology.

Spencer's lecture departed from the government's "religion of peace" dogma, which holds that there is no Islamist aggression, that there is no civilizational jihad to destroy the West from within (never mind that CAIR's progenitor, the Muslim Brotherhood, has bragged about its "sabotage" campaign), and that terrorism is not merely unconnected to Islam but, in fact, is anti-Islamic. According to this thinking, Islamist groups like CAIR have a monopoly on what Americans -- including American law-enforcement and intelligence agents -- are permitted to hear about Islam from academic, media, and government sources. No dissenting views are permitted, no matter how steeped the dissenters may be in Islamic doctrine and no matter how much these dissents accord with what your lyin' eyes are seeing. [...]

CAIR's purpose is to further what the Muslim Brotherhood calls its "grand jihad" to destroy America from within. That is why it is consistently a cheerleader for Islamist terrorists and a thorn in the side of American national security, opposing every sensible measure to protect our homeland.

"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant," Ahmad is quoted as saying in 1998. "The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth."

A key tactic in carrying out this supremacist agenda is to suppress its critics. With their media acumen, CAIR operatives know there is nothing more debilitating for a public figure in America than to be portrayed as a racist or a bigot. Islamists have thus coined the phrase "Islamophobe" to stigmatize those who dare speak forthrightly about the extremely troubling aspects of Islamic scripture, particularly of sharia, Islam's legal and political framework.

We are not, it bears emphasizing, speaking about people who lie about Islam or smear all Muslims as terrorists. Islamists are targeting the truth-tellers. If they can intimidate their critics into silence, they have inched yet closer to the goal of supplanting our First Amendment with their sharia, which condemns as "blasphemy" any speech or expression that casts Islam in a poor light. Blasphemy can be savagely punished -- and, in contrast to the Western idea of defamation, truth is no defense.

Thus is CAIR trying to intimidate the FBI into ostracizing Robert Spencer. As he demonstrates daily at Jihad Watch, the invaluable site he founded, he is effective and immune to Islamist scare tactics. Because Spencer won't quiet down, CAIR officials have concluded that it will be necessary to have the U.S. government silence him. They know the government, the FBI in particular, has a history of being overly solicitous toward Islamist apologists. They are banking on getting satisfaction out of Mueller, and they've brought out the big guns to turn up the heat. Their letter has now been signed by Grievance Industry eminence Jesse Jackson (who better to give sensitivity lessons than the guy who labeled New York City "Hymietown"?) and by such groups as the Islamic Society of North America (another unindicted co-conspirator in the Hamas case, but one for which Obama-administration majordomo Valerie Jarrett nonetheless gave the keynote address at its 2009 annual convention).

If any party is owed an apology or explanation from our government, it is the American people -- over the government's courtship of CAIR. For years, even though the Justice Department was in possession of information showing the key role CAIR officials played in the Muslim Brotherhood's Hamas-support network, government agencies, including the FBI, continued turning to CAIR for "liaison" duties. Top brass forced our law-enforcement agents to endure CAIR-prescribed sensitivity training, and, in the case of the Department of Homeland Security, even published a CAIR press release on an agency's taxpayer-funded website, enabling CAIR to pass itself off as a civil-rights organization. This went on until finally, following the convictions in the HLF case (to say nothing of the emerging indications that CAIR itself may be under investigation), the FBI cut off ties with the group in 2009, citing its Hamas connections. That was a stand for which Mueller won strong bipartisan praise on Capitol Hill. Here's hoping he sticks to his guns.

Arrow Tennessee Mosque Board Mem-ber: Expand Islam via Holy War

At the end of the first Iraq war, the United States designated Nashville, Tenn., to be a "gateway city" for refugees fleeing their war-torn country, setting the stage for what has become, less than 20 years later, a rapidly growing Muslim population in the Volunteer State.

As the Muslim population grows and their communities spread throughout the state, religious leaders say their places of worship must do the same, spurring the construction of mosques and the massive Islamic centers that host them in several Tennessee cities, including Murfreesboro, Memphis and Antioch.

But the physical size of these Islamic centers – and the associations and writings of some of the leaders behind them – are raising some concerns nationwide.

Since the U.S. Census Bureau doesn't ask about religious affiliation, it's unknown exactly how many members of any faith live in America or in any specific state -- so placing the number of Muslims currently living in Tennessee can only be based on best estimates.

Trinity College's American Religious Identification Survey of 2008 shows the number of non-Christians in Tennessee grew from 1 percent of the population in 1990 to 3 percent in 2008, but the survey does not specify how many of those non-Christians were Muslims. A June article by WKRN.comsaid the Muslim population in middle Tennessee had tripled in the past 12 years.

The Commercial Appeal said in a 2008 article that the Greater Memphis area was home to an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Muslims, and the Islamic Center of Nashville claims on its websitethat the number of Muslims in Nashville alone is estimated to be around 20,000. But neither mentions any source for those numbers.

Still, while the number of Muslims in Tennessee remains unclear, everyone agrees that it's rising, and fast. And as the number of worshippers goes up, so does their desire for more and larger places of worship.

But critics say the Muslims who now call Tennessee home are looking to expand their places of worship far beyond their need. What's more, they say, the organizations building the Islamic centers have provided no account for how they received the massive funding their projects require.

Of even greater concern, some critics say, are fears that a radical Islamic agenda may be behind the planning for these large Islamic centers.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro
With a 15-acre plot of land now in its possession, the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro aims to create a full-service prayer center complete with not only a mosque, but outdoor sports fields, pavilions and playgrounds, educational facilities, a multi-purpose facility, a gym and a cemetery.

The goal, according to the center's website, is "to improve the practice, knowledge and understanding of Islam among all people and elevate the image of Islam" by providing "correct information from accredited sources about Islam."

But one of the center's board members would also like to expand Islam through a holy war, according to his MySpace page.

Mosaad Rawash was suspended from the center's board last month pending an investigation into allegations that he supports Hamas and radical Islam, after the Investigative Project on Terrorism unveiled controversial comments and photos it said were found on an old version of Rawash's MySpace page.

According to the Investigative Project, a nonprofit research group aimed at investigating Islamic terrorist and extremist groups, the page included an Arabic pledge to join Palestinians in a holy war to reclaim their "right to Jerusalem."

The page is said to have read: "I swear by God Exalted, that I shall remain faithful to the blood of the Martyrs devoted completely to the historical right, rejecting all types of concessions no matter how strong the pressures or great the sacrifices, pledging to God Almighty to help the Palestinian people in their steadfastness and Jihad until they realize the promise of God."

A poem that was on the page reportedly referred to nations being labeled terrorists for simply defending themselves against people killing their families, adding "maybe I'd rather be called as such than die with shame…long live Palestine… Lebanon… Iraq…"

The page also had a picture honoring Hamas leaders Ahmed Yassin and Abdul Aziz al-Rantissi, the Investigative Project reported.

The MySpace profile has been changed, but the Tennessean newspaper reported seeing the posts last month and that Rawash, when contacted by the paper, said simply that his MySpace page had been inactive for some time.

The postings were removed from the profile that afternoon, the newspaper reported.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro said on its website that it was made aware of the findings and that "Mr. Rowash is being suspended pending further investigation about these allegations, a proper action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation."

The center calls itself "a religious, nonpolitical organization [that] does not support any radical views of any kind by any individual or group," but a list of books recently posted on its site shows it supports at least two radical clerics, says Steven Emerson of the Investigative Project.

"It includes titles from Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual mentor to the international Islamist Muslim Brotherhood" and "Harun Yahya (Turkish Islamist pushing for a Khalifa-like state ruled by the Turks)," Emerson told FoxNews.com in an e-mail.

This list no longer appears on the website, but it was located at www.icmtn.org/ListofBooks.pdf, Emerson said.

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, al-Qaradawi is a prominent Sunni scholar who as recently as last year called the Holocaust "divine punishment" for Jews; encouraged Muslims to put Jews "in their place" as Hitler had done; and publicly prayed that one day Allah would give him the opportunity to die as a martyr while shooting "Allah's enemies, the Jews."

In September 2004, al-Qaradawi signed a communiqué with 93 other clerics, saying that fighting U.S. and British troops in Iraq "is a Shariah duty incumbent upon anyone belonging to the Muslim nation, within and outside Iraq, who is capable of carrying it out," and issued a fatwa permitting the abduction and murder of American civilians in Iraq in order to pressure the American military into withdrawing its forces, the Institute said on its website.

Another author on the list, Harun Yahya, also known as Adnan Oktar, reportedly spent 19 months in jail in Turkeyfor inflammatory anti-Semitic statements in his book "Judaism and Freemasonry" and was sentenced, again in Turkey, to three years in prison in 2008 for creating an illegal organization for personal gain, along with 17 other members of his organization the Bilim Araştırma Vakfı or "Science Research Foundation."

These issues have divided Murfreesboro residents, who last month scheduled a protest and counter-protest surrounding plans for the new Islamic center.

The Middle Tennesseans for Religious Freedom, the group that organized the counter-protest, says critics are discriminating against Muslims due to their religion.

"We, as tolerant and loving community members, come together to defend the right of any member of our community to worship and express his, her, or their faith no matter the religion," the group's Facebook page says. "We will not stand idly by while Muslim people in our community are represented falsely and assaulted on a psychological level."

Jerry Gordon, a member of the board of Former Muslims United, a group dedicated to raising awareness of "the threat from authoritative Shariah to the religious freedom and safety of former Muslims," says the fears are not about religion, they are about Shariah and political Islam.

"The first question you have to pose is: Is Islam a religion, or is it a political doctrine with a religious veneer? ...And there’s a group of people who, after much reading and scholarship, believe it’s the latter, " Gordon told FoxNews.com.

"The people in the community who opposed this are energized by the concern that perhaps what we're building here… is essentially a regional training center for something," he added. "…And the question that's really being posed for which there is no useful information just yet is where are the funds coming from?"

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro did not respond to a request for comment from FoxNews.com; on its website, it says it took three months to raise the $320,000 needed to purchase the land for the new center, over 95 percent of which it says was raised locally in middle Tennessee.

The center also accepts donations in three locations on its website, one of which is dedicated solely to the "New Project."

The Memphis Islamic Center
The Memphis Islamic Center is gearing up to create "a multipurpose Islamic Center to serve the needs of Muslims in the Memphis area and beyond," according to its website.

But critics wonder exactly what that means, especially given the center's newest hire: Sheikh Yasir Qadhi.

Qadhi, the dean of academic affairs at the AlMaghrib Institute, a weekend seminary where instructors travel to teach advanced Islamic studies, made headlines in 2001 with a speech in which he referred to the Holocaust as "false propaganda" and pointed to Jewish people's "crooked nose and blond hair" as evidence that they "are not a Semitic people."

In 2006, Qadhi admitted to being on a terror watch list, saying he had no idea why. His name has since been removed.

Three years later, Qadhi was again thrust into the spotlight when it was discovered that his institute's list of alumni included accused "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and reportedly includes convicted terrorist Daniel Maldonado, also known as Daniel Aljughaifi.

Aljughaifi's public profile is still available on the AlMaghrib Institute website.

Qadhi, who acknowledged last year that Abdulmutallab had attended AlMaghrib seminars, did not reply to messages left for him at the institute. He himself studied under terrorist Imam Ali al-Timimi, who was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of encouraging some of his followers, soon after the 9/11 attacks, to join the violent jihad against Americans in Afghanistan, and who offered them a recommendation on a terror camp where they could get training and instructions. Al-Timimi also famously celebrated the crash of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003, saying "his heart felt certain good omens" and "Muslims were overjoyed because of the adversity that befell their greatest enemy," according to the indictment.

In a letterissued in defense of his former teacher, Qadhi said Timimi "played an instrumental role in shaping and directing me to take the path that has led me to where I am today."

That path has apparently led Qadhi to the Memphis Islamic Center, where he will be preaching regularly as its resident scholar, according to the center's website.

Pastor Steve Stone of the Heartsong Church, located across the street from the Memphis Islamic Center, says the church has seen no signs of radicalism from its new neighbor.

"They’ve attended functions here and we have attended functions over there," Stone told FoxNews.com. "We're fond of them, and they of us."

The congregations are so close, in fact, Stone says the church has offered its services to facilitate events being held at the unfinished campus, as well as the construction of the buildings themselves.

"They don't have a source of water ... so they come over and fill these huge water containers 'cause they need it to make cement," Stone said. "We offered them to use our parking lots for events they have over there, we've offered them to use our buildings for events or programs. Our response to them is, we believe, to try to understand them and to love them... they're good people."

As for why others don't do the same, Stone says a lot of it stems from fear of the unknown. And the best way to combat that, he says, is to "get to know them."

"Muslim people are kind of like Christian people, they're all over the board politically, socially, religiously, you know they all take the name Muslim but they're very different kinds of people, and I just would say don't judge a whole faith or a particular expression of it by some people you may have heard about and don't even really know," he said.

The Memphis Islamic Center did not reply to requests for comment on this story.

The center's website has said that it purchased the 31.24 acres of land for the project for $700,000 in July of 2008 with donations and an interest-free personal loan, the Memphis Daily reported.

Islamic Center of Tennessee
The Islamic Center of Tennessee is so anxious to move forward with its plan to convert a movie theater in Antioch into a massive mosque and community center that it has a countdown to its closing date – down to the millisecond -- on the front page of its website.
But not everyone's excited.

Though the center has a contract for the purchase of the building, some Antioch residents have signed a petition asking the property's owners to sell instead to Nashville State Community College, which also submitted a bid on the space.

Petition organizer Karen Johnson told the Nashville City Paper that the move was sparked out of concern that a mosque would inject less business activity into the struggling Antioch area than the school.
But anti-terrorism consultant Patrick Poole says residents should also be concerned about one of the Islamic center's directors, Awadh Binhazim.

Binhazim, a Muslim chaplain at Vanderbilt University and a director at Islamic Center of Tennessee, made headlines in January when he said that as a Muslim, he had no choice but to "go with what Islam teaches," which is that homosexuality "is punishable by death."

Binhazim also is the president of Olive Tree Education, an outreach program that aims "to propagate the message of Islam and dispel any misconceptions," where he's taught alongside Imam Abdulhakim Mohamed, the former imam of the al-Farouq mosque, which was identified in the 9/11 commission report as a major source of funding for Usama Bin Laden and other terrorist organizations.

But Yasser Saleh Arafat, a spokesman for the Islamic Center of Tennessee, says Binhazim is a "good man." He says fears of radicalism within the center are spurred by ignorance.

"A lot of people don't really know what Islam is. They generalize the actions of a few over the rest, and this is just not right," Arafat told FoxNews.com. "Muslims do not generalize the actions of Timothy McVeigh and Jim Jones and David Koresh to say, ‘Oh, look, Christianity teaches that.' That's stereotyping, and we choose ourselves to stay away from stereotyping."

He says the community worked hard to raise the $1.55 million it needed to purchase the theater via donations and loans from Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and it has a right to build on it as it sees fit.

"We have as much equal rights as anyone else. We are American citizens, we pay taxes… you have a professor, a doctor, an engineer out of every 10 Muslims in the United States; we are an affluent people and we do have the ability to grow as well," he said.

As for the need for such big facilities, Arafat says, just attend services at a Nashville mosque and it's easy to see why these new centers are necessary.

"The four mosques that we have in Nashville are very small and are very crowded," he said. "If you come on Friday people pray in the street. So we said 'OK, what can we do to make it better? What can we do to accommodate the growth but do it in a way that will attract the youth, and take them away from the hand of extremism and take them away from the hand of gangs and other things?"

The new center, he says, will do just that.

"The place is big," he said. "It could accommodate a lot of activities inside of it. It'll have a mosque, it'll have a library, a movie theatre, lecture halls, it'll have a coffee stand for people to sit down and do their homework, it'll have a gym, it'll have day care… it would completely create an environment for our kids, for our youth, and for our families to come, enjoy and have fun, but at the same time worship as well," he said.

The Islamic Center of Tennessee is schedule to close on the Antioch property on Aug. 9.

The Islamic Center for Murfreesboro says it's working on the outdoor section of its facility, as well as the 10,000-square-foot "multi-use facility" as the "Phase I" of its building plan.

And the Memphis Islamic Center said in May that it had started construction on its new child care facility and prayer center. A June update said the prayer center was 50 percent complete and would hopefully be ready by Ramadan, which begins Aug 11.
