Exclamation Gaza Conflict 2012

Gaza terrorists might target Tel Aviv

As rockets continue to fall on Israel's south, police fear an escalation that may see long-range rockets targeting Tel Aviv.

11 March 12 11:02, Globes’ correspondent

Rocket fire from the Gaza Strip continued Saturday night, and police are expressing concern that the current round of fighting could escalate. Police fear that terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip might use weapons that have not yet been seen - long-range rockets that could reach metropolitan Tel Aviv.

The police and the IDF Home Front Command are not taking any chances, and are planning for the worst case scenario. A senior police official told Hebrew daily “Ma’ariv” that there are serious concerns that terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip might use weapons not yet employed. We know that terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip have long-range missiles with a range of 60-70 kilometers that are ready to be launched towards Israel,” he warned.
”The question now is, are they planning to launch them deep into Israeli territory or not? We are preparing for all scenarios, and three of our fronts are on full alert: Tel Aviv, Central Israel, and Jerusalem. The cities of Bat Yam, Holon, Rishon LeZion, Ness Ziona, Rehovot, and Beit Shemesh are also being prepared.”

At this point, it seems that the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip are not interested in using long-range rockets, for fear of a strong Israeli retaliation and even a large-scale military operation.

Over the weekend, more than 100 Grad and Kassam rockets and mortar bombs were fired into Israel. The Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted more than 30 rockets that were heading for cities. The IDF is continuing its counterattacks in the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian reports, there have been 16 dead and dozens injured so far.

Lets keep letting our friends and family everywhere know the truth about the present conflict in Gaza. How it started with Israel in good faith giving it to the arabs as a peace deal, bit got only thousands of rockets as a thank you. The world sent millions of dollars and Euros to Gaza PLA officials, all of it either squandered or used to get weapons against Israel. Hamas and other palestinian terrorists take over and uses it as a base to plan attacks against Israel. TODAY itself dozens of rockets are falling on Israel from Gaza. Israel killed a top terrorist commander who openly said he would destroy Israel. And this is how the arabs behave, in other words they defend such terrorists!

In Southern Israel, schools are closed, lives disrupted, 13 Israelis killed, rockets raining down and the media is mainly reporting that Israel is bombing Gaza without showing both sides!

This is why there is no peace in the middle east, for they have double standards for treating Israelis defending thier nation and the terrorist arabs defending their terrorist leaders.

There will be NO PEACE for arabs until the arabs recognize Israel. Period!

Exclamation Israel Under Fire: Missile Barrage Hits South

Israel Under Fire: Missile Barrage Hits South

MARCH 11, 2012 16:38
BY SIMON PLOSKER

[Translate]

Once again, 1 million Israelis have spent the last 48 hours running to the nearest bomb shelters or their reinforced rooms. Most of the headlines and articles have focused on Israeli air strikes on terrorist targets in Gaza that have resulted in the deaths of over a dozen Palestinians. But what about the impact of some 130 rockets (so far) aimed at Israeli towns and cities?

The Times of London describes rockets being fired at “Israeli border towns” while the Financial Times headlines its story “Escalation in Gaza border violence”. Ashkelon (population 113,000), Ashdod (population 206,000) and Beersheba (population 194,000) are anything but “border towns”.

Likewise, the weaponry deployed by Gazan terrorists is a far cry from “homemade” rockets.

Source: IDF Spokesperson's Unit

Some of the latest information courtesy of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit:

More than 130 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at major population centers in southern Israel in the last two days.

On Friday, March 9, four people were wounded, one severely. On March 10, a mare was killed and a home near Ashdod was damaged by a direct rocket hit.
In light of the ongoing rocket attacks, schools in many cities and towns in southern Israel are closed on Sunday, March 11.

Areas targeted include Ashdod, Be’ersheba, Yavne, Netivot and Ashkelon, as well as the Eshkol and Shaar Hanegev regional councils.
The Iron Dome system intercepted about 90% of the rockets fired at Be’ersheba, Ashdod and Ashkelon.

The terrorist squads are launching their rockets from densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip, including Bet Lahiya, Jabaliya, Rafah, Gaza, and El-Bureij.
Despite the rocket barrage, the Erez Crossing into Gaza is open for passengers and employees of international organizations. Kerem Shalom is open for the delivery of 200 truckloads from Israel into Gaza.
Keep an eye out for these issues in your local media:

Moral equivalence: Is the media distinguishing between pinpoint Israeli strikes against terrorists as opposed to indiscriminate Palestinian rocket attacks purposely targeting Israeli civilians?

The “Cycle of Violence”: Despite this oft used description in the media, this is not a “cycle of violence”, which apportions equal responsibility and intent to both sides. In this case, as in previous conflict situations, Israel exercised its right to pre-emptive self-defense by targeting a terrorist squad planning a combined terror attack that was to take place via Sinai in the coming days.
Chronological inversion: Where does your media coverage start? With the launching of missiles from Gaza or the Israeli response? If the focus is on Israeli air strikes, does this skew the coverage to present Israel as the aggressor?

A “Disproportionate Response“: Is Israel accused of overreacting or responding to Palestinian terrorist activity in a disproportionate manner?

Missile Strikes Empty School in Be’er Sheva

A terrorist missile from Gaza struck the courtyard of an empty school in Be’er Sheva Sunday afternoon. Another rocket damaged 15 houses. The city’s order to close all schools saved possible mass casualties.

More than 25 missiles were fired on southern Israel Sunday, several of them intercepted by the Iron Dome system, which automatically weeds out missiles that are aimed at open areas, but is not foolproof;.

The rocket attack on Be’er Sheva was not intercepted and caused widespread property damage as well as sending several people into shock.

A Be’er Sheva police officer said that if one of the missiles had exploded a few feet to the right or left of its impact site in a residential area, it would have directly hit an apartment building.

IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz reassured Israel that it “will continue to retaliate with force and sensitivity against any firing directed at Israel. Hamas and other terror groups continue to gain strength at an alarming rate. We do not seek escalation, but Hamas controls Gaza."

Rockets also exploded in open areas in the western Negev, between Be’er Sheva and Ashkelon.

The IDF noted that all but one of the more than a dozen people killed in counterterrorist measures were terrorists.

Over the course of 2011, more than 600 rockets launched from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel. One million Israelis are sleeping tonight under the threat of rocket fire from Hamas.

The IDF does not seek an escalation in the region. However, the IDF is prepared to defend the residents of Israel and will respond with strength and determination against any attempt to execute terrorist attacks.

Hamas uses other terror organizations to carry out terror attacks against the State of Israel and will bear the consequences of these actions in any future operation embarked upon by the IDF in order to eliminate the terror threat and restore the relative calm to the area.

Success for Iron Dome: Scored 90% Accuracy

Defense Minister says IDF missile defense system intercepted 27 of 30 rockets it tried to shoot down.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Saturday that the IDF's Iron Dome system carried out 30 attempted interceptions of rockets fired from Gaza since Friday, successfully shooting down 27 of them. "This is a 90% success rate – a very high percentage – and we have 13 or 14 dead in Gaza and some serious damage done to the Resistance Committees' infrastructures," he added.

The IDF Website counted 31 attempted interceptions, with 28 successes, by 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Barak explained: "The current round began with the hit on Zuheir al-Qaisi, one of the heads of the Popular Committees, who apparently was in the process of planning a large scale terror attack that I cannot yet say has been thwarted. This turned into a round [of fighting]."

Barak congratulated all those involved in Iron Dome, which proved itself to be an effective – if expensive – anti-missile defense over the weekend. "This is the time to say thank you to Iddo [Maj. Gen. Iddo Nechushtan – ed.], the IAF Commander, who was behind the vigorous effort to complete and operationally deploy the Iron Dome batteries as they arrive, and thank you to the Aerial Defense fighters, and of course, thank you to the industries' people for the extraordinary accomplishment of Iron Dome."

The Defense Minister added: "This system, which is part of the multi-layer interception system, changes not only the defense of civilians, but also the freedom of operation of the military leadership and the political tier when we deal with the threats that surround us."

"I think it is time to say that this accomplishment, by Iron Dome, needs to be expanded and translated to the other layers, of Magic Wand and the two tiers of the Arrow, so that the citizens of Israel – in the Middle Eastern situation – will have the best defenses that Israeli technology and the accomplishments of our people and fighters can provide."

"This is an effort that will take several years, but it is vital to enter it as soon as possible so that it ripens."

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with the heads of the councils in the south that were fired at (Be’er Sheva, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Kiryat Malakhi, Gan Yavneh, the Eshkol Regional Council, the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council and the Bnei Shimon Regional Council). He asked the council chairmen to convey to residents his esteem for their fortitude. The mayors noted the security that the Iron Dome system provides to their residents.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “We will continue to hit whoever plans to attack citizens of the State of Israel. At the same time, we will continue to improve home front defense.

There needs to be a strong response to these attacks, I believe war should be brutal and without concern for those who make it. I am sending this to everyone I know in TA, many feel that the war does not effect them.

Israel's Crisis in Gaza Deepens With Strikes

By JOSHUA MITNICK

TEL AVIV—Israel and Gaza militants on Sunday traded cross-border strikes for a third day that killed a 12-year-old Palestinian child and blasted an empty Israeli school, as both sides said they were seeking to contain the worst violence in six months.

Regional Upheaval

Militants from the Gaza Strip have fired at least 130 missiles in retaliation for Israel's assassination Friday of a Palestinian militant leader it accused of plotting an attack from Egypt's Sinai desert into Israel. Those rockets have seriously injured one person and forced the cancellation of school on Sunday and Monday for hundreds of thousands of Israeli children, said the Israeli army.

Israeli air attacks have killed at least 18 Gazans during the current crisis. Israel's army said that most of them were militants, but Gazan officials said that at least two were civilians, including the boy.

The violence highlights how the turmoil in Egypt has destabilized the border region between Israel, Gaza, and Sinai. Israel sees the vast Sinai Peninsula as an emerging threat because it has become a haven for militants amid weakening central authority.
Despite the toll, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said his militant group, which controls Gaza, was in talks with armed groups in the coastal strip. He said the government of Egypt was working "hour by hour" to reach a cease fire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjmain Netanyahu said his country's army "exacted a very high price," though the army said its attacks were focused on rocket-launch teams from fringe militant groups that were targeting Israel. The military appeared to be avoiding hitting Hamas's leadership, in an apparent effort not to escalate the crisis.

Associated Press
A rocket is launched from the Israeli antimissile system known as Iron Dome in Ashdod, Israel, on Sunday.

Israel's government has come under increasing domestic criticism for tolerating the rocket fire without a stiffer response. However, some 42 missile intercepts by Israel's Iron Dome rocket system has limited the damage in cities in southern Israel that are within distance of Gazan rockets, curbing the pressure for a wider offensive.
"We are not interested in escalations, and we hold Hamas responsible for what is occurring in the Gaza Strip," said Israeli army chief of staff Lt. Gen Benny Gantz in a statement.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday called for the intervention of Egypt, the European Union and the international community to stop the violence. Egypt's government on Saturday condemned the Israeli attacks and called to halt the violence.
The current round of violence began when Israel killed Zuhair al-Qaissi, leader of the Popular Resistance Committees militia, for allegedly planning a cross border attack from Sinai into southern Israel in the coming days.

Israel accused Mr. Qaissi of funneling money to Hamas from Hezbollah, which are considered terrorist organizations by Israel and the U.S., and planning an attack in August that killed eight Israelis. The August attack triggered the most recent upsurge in violence.

Declining security control over Sinai since the fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stoked Israeli fears about terrorist attacks along its border. In recent weeks, Israel's army has said it found an explosive near the border that was planned as a terrorist attack.

The barrage of rockets from Palestinian militants shows how smaller fringe militias are growing bolder in the three years since Israel send ground troops into the Gaza Strip as punishment for rocket fire into southern Israel. Hamas has remained on the sidelines, neither joining the attacks nor reining them in. Many of Israel's attacks have focused on Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian militant proxy of Iran.

Israeli officials warned that totally eliminating the rocket fire would require reoccupying Gaza. But such a strategy, which some lawmakers have said is necessary, could jeopardize ties with Egypt's new government and saddle Israel with the costs of administering the impoverished territory.

Analysts said that Israel is following a controlled escalation: ordering hits on militants it considers threats, and then trying to contain the flare up.

"Israel will take steps necessary to protect the lives its civilians without a major operation designed to remove Hamas from power, which is very costly," said Gerald Steinberg, a political science professor at Bar Ilan University. "This is the least bad option."

So where is Obama on this? I've heard no statement from him condemning this, and I don’t see how Israel can afford to keep shooting down $200.00 missiles with $50,000 missiles that can't be sustained

Obama wishes Israel gives all the 1967 lands to the arabs. So naturally he sympathizes with the "palestinian" terrorists. Conclusion he doesnt agree with Israel, but he is on a re election bid, he would rather not say it, so he says nothing.

Not to mention he doesnt care much for Israel, or Israels security.

BBC, Gaza and continued illegitimate reporting

Ray Cook on March 11th, 2012

The blatant misreporting and misrepresentation of Israel’s self-defensive action against rocket fire from Gaza continues to be a national disgrace.
There’s something very rotten in the State of the BBC’s Middle East desk on its news website.

Only today did the continuing murderous barrage of southern Israel which puts a million lives at risk, not to mention property and treasure, actually make it to the website’s home page. Although even that small mention now seems to have disappeared.

And what was the headline to direct us to this sudden escalation in rocket fire from Gaza which has seen over 200 missiles launched since Friday? Was it “Miltitants in Gaza launch rocket barrage against southern Israel’?
Not bloody likely. This is the BBC, remember and they seem only interested, for the sake of balance, of course, to highlight Israel’s response in defence of its citizens.

‘Israel launches fresh airstrikes on Gaza’

This was the disgusting headline.

“Israeli (sic) says almost 100 rockets fired from Gaza have struck Israel since the exchange of fire began.”

Subtle, no? Israel ‘says’ – after all, you take what Israel ‘says’ with a strong dose of scepticism, no? And ‘since the exchange of fire’. Thus, in a sentence, neutralising and sanitising the assault on Israel and characterising it as morally equivalent that Israel’s fire, in response to the rockets, is somehow a justification for the rocket fire from the Gaza side. So, once again, cause and response are turned on their head.

In fact, the report lies and implies that Israel is responsible for the escalation:
“The latest flare-up began on Friday when an Israeli air strike on a car in Gaza City killed militant commander Zohair al-Qaisi, secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), and two of his associates.”

What it does not mention is that al-Qaisi was plotting a terrorist attack. When the British or Americans take out terrorist leaders in Afghanistan that is justified but because the BBC is ‘neutral’ about the Israel-Palestine conflict and terrorists are ‘activists’ or ‘militants’, taking them out is an ‘escalation’ not a defensive act.

The Arab League, which has proved useless in preventing the horrors in Homs in Syria, characterised the 15 deaths of terrorists and rocket firers as a ‘massacre’. I wonder what the minimum number of Palestinians is to be called a ‘massacre’ ? 5? 10? In Syria it appears to be several hundred. Are innocent Syrian lives worth so much less than Palestinian militants in the debased arithmetic of the Arab world?

And just to show how even-handed the BBC is, what picture do they show us? The school in Beersheva hit by a rocket? No, they show us the results of an airstrike on Rafah where one person was killed.

UN spokesman Richard Miron called the situation in Gaza “very fragile and unsustainable”.

“We deplore the fact that civilians are once again paying the price,” he said.
I wonder whose civilians he means? Could it be the 1 million Israelis who are indiscriminately targeted by rockets and mortars? Or those in Gaza who are unfortunate enough to pay the price for the actions of groups who care nothing for the safety of their own fellow citizens? Maybe he means both? But I doubt it.

And whilst Israel closes its schools (and it’s lucky it did, as one rocket hit a school in Beersheva as I mentioned above) to protect its children, in Gaza, no doubt as has always been the case, schoolyards and hospitals, mosques and residential areas are used as bases for rocket launchers with the callous, deliberate and cynical hope that Israel will strike and injure or kill ‘martyrs’ and bring opprobrium on itself.

It is instructive to muse what would be the situation if Israel were Syria and Netanyahu Assad. What response would there be to hundreds of rockets aimed at civilians? Israel’s restraint is in gross contrast to Assad’s brutal massacre of his own people. Indeed, as the rockets rained down, Israel was discussing how to continue to deliver humanitarian aid through its crossings.
Assad, lays a real siege to his own people cutting off electricity and starving the populace whilst Israel feeds its enemies and provides them with the wherewithal to live.

Yet, no doubt, sooner or later, the UN will be stirring itself to condemn Israel for defending itself

Gaza – where rockets rain down amid cheers

With every blast that propels another rocket from Gaza toward Israel, a loud Palestinian cheer goes up.

They cheer outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City as a rocket blasts off from a location uncomfortably near the hospital itself, even as the people gathered there await the inevitable retaliation from Israel and the arrival at the hospital of new patients.

She also Tweeted, “I pity those who hate themselves and respond against my tweet to attack Gaza. Keep on sunbathing. Maybe if the Gazans had their homes hit, they would finally do something against the murderers.”

“It’s not fair that we are sleeping here quietly and a million people in the south are living under fire! We have to bomb Gaza. We’d be happy if the children are evacuated. It’s time to stop the abuse.”

Palestinian Terrorists Strike Gaza Border Crossing
Posted on March 12, 2012

ISRAEL UNDER FIRE

This morning, Palestinian terrorists fired three mortars on the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing. The mortars struck a truck and a van on their way to deliver goods to the people of Gaza. Following the shooting, activity at the crossing was suspended for just a few minutes. After evaluating the situation, it was decided to continue operations at the crossing, where goods continue to be transferred from Israel into the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, over 180 trucks of goods were transferred from Israel to Gaza. The IDF will continue to act in order to prevent terrorist attacks from the Gaza Strip. At the same time, the Israel Defense Forces will continue to distinguish between the terrorist organizations and the civilian population.

Trucks with goods and supplies routinely enter the Gaza Strip from Israel at the Kerem Shalom border crossing.

The IDF and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) will continue to abide by their commitments to transfer goods through the Kerem Shalom crossing to the people of Gaza in an efficient and secure manner.

Learn more about Israeli shipments of supplies to the Gaza Strip.

Top Tweet on Gaza Proven False
Posted on March 12, 2012

Two photos tweeted in the past 24 hours, both allegedly depicting the results of Israeli air strikes in Gaza in recent days, have been proven false.

1. The photo first tweeted by Khulood Badawi (@KhuloodBadawi) and later by Diana Alzeer (@ManaraRam), allegedly depicting a Palestinian girl killed by an Israeli air strike yesterday, was proven to have originated in 2006 and to have had nothing at all to do with Israeli action.
This photo is now the top tweet for #Gaza, with over 300 retweets. It is completely false

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited southern Israel on Sunday to see local defense systems close-up, and to show his support.

“I came here to express solidarity with residents of this region, and to show my appreciation for the IDF and Shin Bet for their wonderful work,” the prime minister said.

“My guideline is as follows: to strike anyone who plans to harm us,” he continued, adding, “The IDF is dealing heavy blows to terror organizations.”

One of Netanyahu’s stops was at an Iron Dome anti-missile system battery, where he spoke to the young soldiers manning the system. “You are doing exceptional work,” he told them.

The Iron Dome system has successfully blocked 90% of the several dozen rockets and missiles fired at southern Israel since Friday.

Netanyahu praised residents of southern Israel as well, saying their courage is key to Israel’s success. “The combination of offensive capability, defensive capability and citizens’ resilience – that is the winning combination, and we have it,” he declared.

Mayors of southern cities met with Netanyahu, explained the security-related challenges they have faced over the past two days, and requested immediate assistance.

PM Blames Iran for Gaza Rocket Fire
Attacks from Gaza “an Iranian problem,” Netanyahu says.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has pointed the finger at Iran in ongoing rocket attacks from Gaza. “The fire from Gaza is an Iranian problem, not a Palestinian problem,” he said Sunday in a meeting of Likud ministers.

Iran has been accused of funding Islamic Jihad, one of the main terrorist groups operating in Gaza, Judea and Samaria and the group behind many of the recent rocket attacks.

IDF spokesman, Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai, leveled similar accusations. “Islamic Jihad continues to act as the long arm of Iran, which finances, supports, and encourages it even today with weapons and money that come straight from Tehran,” he said.

Hamas has, so far, distanced itself from direct rocket attacks, defense officials said Sunday, but allows attacks to continue unimpeded. Ministers warned that they would hold Hamas responsible for all terrorism perpetrated from Gaza whether or not its members carried out the actual attack.

The IDF has succeeded in dealing a blow to the terrorist infrastructure of Hamas as well as that of other terrorist groups in Gaza, Mordechai said. Assassinations targeting Islamic Jihad have weakened that group’s leadership as well, he noted.

The Gush Etzion regional council has reached out to southern Israel by inviting dozens of children to a day of fun activities in the Judean hills, far away from Gaza terrorists’ rockets.

Approximately 50 children from the Shapir region will travel to Gush Etzion on Monday to take part in a day of fun planned just for them. The day’s activities are to include swimming, soccer, basketball, a trip to a petting zoo, and more.

The day will end with a movie, popcorn, and dinner before the ride home.

“We are happy to host children from the south, and hope that they will experience a relaxing and entertaining day in our region,” said regional council head Davidi Perl. Gush Etzion also hopes to welcome the children back in the future “in calmer days,” he added.

The Gush Katif Museum in Jerusalem will also be open free of charge Monday to residents of the south.

Schools in much of southern Israel were closed Sunday and will be closed again Monday.
