Default An Iranian politician finally talks (a little bit of) sense

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7...372101,00.html

Yeah, yeah, he still supports "Palestine", but at least it's progress.

Now, anyone wanna place bets on how much longer he'll live?

AW,

Why do you consider this statement a progress? Do you understand how the Iranian political system works?

He openly criticized Ahmadinejad. Only a Mullah, especially Khamenei, can usually do that. And he openly criticized one of the Iranian government's major policies.

It is, if cut to the bone, an anti-Mahmoud Ahmadinejad statement. The waters being tested are not those that Israelis care to swim in.

Ahamadinejad is far from the most powerful figure in Iran, and is probably used more than he uses. He is yesterday's man, in the process of slowly fading away. But there is heavy division in Iran (and some heavy divisions), so if the lid comes off, who knows what'll come out of the pot.

Iran-watchers in Israel, which includes a large number of Israelis fluent in Farsi, usually see at least four or five major interest-groups seething with discontent. But Iran is a large country, and not even the best intelligence can cover all possible outcomes, especially of the "palace intrigue" type.

There are many Ayatollahs in Iran, and Khamenei is not the most powerful of them all.

While Ahmydinnerjacket and Khamanei may be more publicly visible, their base political grounds are not that stable.

What David posted is a brief summary of Iran's socio-political and military system, suffise to say that the statement is a sign, but not one of progress as such.

There are much harsher and more genuine critics of Iran's regime, many in Iran itself.
