Paparock to stimulate a bit of discussion, let me post an expract from one of your links above and let us examine if this is actually happening in America today? What does the average American believe? Are they in a state of satiation or is it Denial?

This cannot happen today simply because the Jihadists cannot match American firepower. This is the Sole Reason why the Jihadists have not started a land invasion of the USA. If they did then they would be pulverized into atomic dust with the US nuclear arsenal. And if the Jihadists had the kind of firepower to outmatch America’s, then the fate of the Americans would have been no different from those of Islam’s earlier victims.
The only thing that stops the Jihadists is that their capability trails their intentions.
The Jihadists have started creeping into the USA stealthily, so that at the right time, when no one suspects them, they could strike in a dramatic way, as they did on 9/11. The beasts of yesteryear will operate like termites, by corroding the structure of their adversary from within, silently, and bring down the roof. When nobody expects it to fall.
But we need not be all that surprised, since the declared aim of the Muslims is to Islamize America. Some Jihadi schools have chided the Al Qaeda for acting prematurely and upsetting the applecart of deceit of corroding America from within, so that in a few decades Islam would have been in a position to take over the USA from within.
In fact Saudi government literature collected during the past year from American mosques also tells Muslims living in the United States to "behave as if on a mission “Behind Enemy Lines” says an 89-page report released by Freedom House, a Human Rights Group, founded by Eleanor Roosevelt. (Freedom House is one of the oldest human rights groups in the United States.)
This is no hearsay, but has been published in the American Media. Our Administration better take preventive action without further delay. 9/11 and the pronouncements of bleeding America with a thousand cuts from the Muslim leaders points in an eerie direction.
If the far less dangerous Japanese Americans could be interned during World War 2, then the far more virulent American Muslims should all be Interned in Gitmo Bay like camps.
The Muslim-leftist takeover of American Universities
”Code Pink” has already sunk its claws into American Universities. Many of the influential Chairs at leading American Universities are occupied by those who favor terrorism. Be it Yale, Harvard, Ann Arbor, we find many Deans openly displaying pro-terrorist tendencies in the kind of curriculums, they devise, the kind of questions they ask in the semesters, the content of the lectures they deliver in classes.
Organizations like CAIR (Council for American Islamic Relations) have been richly funded by the Saudis to cultivate important media personalities, journalists, even the judiciary is being undermined with the use of legal cases that pit the African-American community against the rest. Prisons, are being used to hunt for convicts who nurse an imaginary grudge against the society of their birth. In addition to all these, more sinister and nefarious designs are being undertaken. Designs that escape our notice.
Middle Eastern men qualify in droves to be drivers of truck trailers ferrying hazardous chemicals. Why is this so?
One tendency is to get driving licenses for Truck-Trailer driver to carry hazardous chemicals and combustible material by men of Middle Eastern origins. The next terrorist attack on the USA could be with trucks and truck-trailers.

The EMP attack would immobilize our overwhelmingly electronic based lives. It would immobilize our telecommunication network, the Internet, the Financial money transfer systems like SWIFT, broadcasting services (TV and Radio).

Finally, The Smoking Gun

One of the most fascinating exhibits presented by the prosecution in the Holy Land Foundation case (provided by researchers for the NEFA Foundation) is a memorandum on the Muslim Brotherhood’s multifaceted plan to convert the United States to an Islamic nation. It is the smoking gun of the Ikhwan’s long-standing efforts to destroy the Western world as we know it.

The most interesting exhibit is a Muslim Brotherhood memorandum by Mohamed Akram, dated May 22, 1991, where he outlines the Ikhwan vision of the future. He leaves no ambiguity as to the nature of the Ikhwan calling. (The exhibits will be posted and written about more completely in the NEFA website in coming days).

Under the heading “Understanding the role of the Muslim Brother in North America,” he writes:

“The process of settlement is a ‘Civilization-Jihadist Process’ with all the word means. The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated ad God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

But wait, there is more:

“Without this level of understanding, we are not up to this challenge and have not prepared ourselves for Jihad yet. It is a Muslim’s destiny to perform Jihad and work wherever he is and wherever he lands until the final hour comes, and there is no escape from that destiny except for those who chose to slack.”

Akram then spells out in some detail the role of the Brotherhood in moving the project forward: “As for the role of the Ikhwan, it is the initiative, pioneering, leadership, raising the banner and pushing people in that direction (the Jihadist process). They are then able to employ, direct, and unify Muslims’ efforts and powers for this process. In order to do that, we must possess a master of the art of ‘coalitions,’ the art of ‘absorption’ and the principles of ‘cooperation.’”

The document then gives rationale for setting up Ikhwan organizations across the country: “We must say that we are in a country which understands no language other than the language of the organizations, and one which does not respect or give weight to any group without effective, functional and strong organizations.”

The document also deals with the criticism among the Brothers that the focus on the United States will drain support for the establishment of the global caliphate. The response is two-fold:
1) “The success of the Movement in America in establishing an observant Islamic base with power and effectiveness will be the the best support and aid to the global Movement project.”
2) The global (Ikhwan) movement has not “succeeded yet in distributing roles to is branches, stating that what is needed from them as one of the participants or contributors to the project to establish the global Islamic state. The day this happens, the children of the American Ikhwani branch will have a far-reaching impact and positions that make the ancestors proud.”

The document ends with a list of Ikhwan groups trying to coordinate, including all the usual (ISNA, ICNA, IIIT etc.)

What is so interesting about the document is the breadth of ambition, the conviction of ultimate success and the care with which the campaign we see today was being thought about 16 years ago. So is the the clarity of the ultimate objective of ending our years as a functioning democracy, built on the rule of secular law, minority rights and freedom of religion, press etc.

The infiltration of the government by members and sympathizers, the coordinated role of the organizations in pursuing specific objectives, the recruitment of the best and the brightest into the movement, and other objectives are far advanced, perhaps further than the author could have imagined in so short a time.

The rationale, for those like Lieken et al who want play footsie with these groups bent on our destruction, is truly mindboggling. I don’t think the Brothers who have been on the cusp of the new PR campaign, from Ramadan to Akef, have bothered to spell this out like the Brothers do for themselves.

But here we have it, in their own words, written by their own hands. There is much more to say, and I will revisit the topic as more information comes in.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s “Military Work” in the US

The Holy Land Foundation (HLF) trial is already proving to be a watershed event in terms of exposing the inner-workings of the Ikhwan, or the Muslim Brotherhood, in the United States. The exhibits released by the U.S. district court in Dallas paint the picture of a semi-secretive organization bent on recruitment, expansion, subversion, and – as Doug Farah pointed out in his excellent post - The Smoking Gun on the Muslim Brotherhood's Agenda, transforming the United States into an Islamic state. One of the documents released, quoted by Farah, is a strategy memo by Mohamed Akram (Adlouni), (More on Akram below) that explains that the Brotherhood in America wages:
...a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.
If there are any questions about what sort of American jihad is envisioned by the Brotherhood, Zeid al-Noman (aka Zaid Naman) lays it out for us. Al-Noman (listed in the personal phone books of both convicted PIJ leader Sami al-Arian and Hamas deputy political bureau chief Musa Abu Marzook), was introduced as Masul or “official” of the Executive Office of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood before a speech he gave in the early 1980s on the Brotherhood in America somewhere in Missouri – likely in Kansas City. In this fascinating speech, al-Noman explained the history of the Movement, going into detail about its roots in the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the establishment of other front-organizations.


However, perhaps the most disturbing information revealed by al-Noman was the “special activity” of the Brotherhood in America, which was one of thirteen goals outlined in his speech. Another was “securing the group.”





An audience member later asked the question:
Um [Unidentified Male]: By “Securing the Group”, do you mean military securing? And, if it is that, would you explain to us a little bit the means to achieve it.[sic]
Ze [Zeid Al-Noman]: No. Military work is listed under “Special work”. “Special work” means military work. “Securing the Group” is the Group’s security against outside dangers. For instance, to monitor the suspicious movements on the…,which exist on the American front such as Zionist; Masonry…etc. Monitoring the suspicious movements or the sides, the government bodies such as the CIA, FBI…etc, so that we find out if they are monitoring us, and we are not being monitored, how can we get rid of them. That is what is meant by “Securing the Group.”
The next question was why the North American Brotherhood did not have different organizational methods from the Brotherhood in the Islamic world. Al-Noman disagreed with that assessment, as an example of different organizational methods, he said:
If the asking brother is from Jordan, for instance, he would know that it is not possible to have military training from Jordan, for instance, while here in America, there is weapons training in many of the Ikhwan’s camps.
Al-Noman continued, detailing the travels of Ikwhan members to campsites and conducting training:
In some of the regions when they go to a camp, they take two things, they would request a camp which has a range, a shooting range and one which has a range to shoot, one which has a range which they use for shooting. You would find that in some of the camps. They would get an advanced permit for that.
Al-Noman reported the difficulty of training in Oklahoma due to suspicious authorities, but noted that in Missouri they had found a more inconspicuous santuary for their subversive militancy.





The importance of these camps? Al-Noman gave the audience an example of a good sister, (in this case, the wife of an Ikhwan member), as a woman who:
...had just gave birth, just delivered two or three days ago and her husband leaves her and attend Ikhwan camps. If he tells her, “I will stay and take care of you”, she would tell him. “no.” She does not accept.
There has been much debate over the nature of the Muslim Brotherhood. Some contend that the movement has become peaceful, while others say it is inherently violent. The strategy memo and this discussion of weapons training formally conducted by the Muslim Brotherhood within the United States should cause those involved in that debate to sit up and take notice.

Who is Mohamed Akram (Adlouni)?
Akram was on the initial board of directors of the United Association of Studies and Research (UASR), a HAMAS front that was based in Northern Virginia from approximately 1991 through 2004. UASR, an unindicted co-conspirator in the HLF case, was headed by Ahmed Yousef who now serves as political advisor to head of HAMAS in Gaza, Ismail Haniya.

"The Ikhwan in North America",
co-authored by NEFA consultant Douglas Farah and NEFA Director of Analysis and Research Ron Sandee.

This report is intended to offer readers a short history of the Muslim Brotherhood's activities in the United States-as well as its goals and structure-as revealed by evidence recently presented during the ongoing criminal trial in the Northern District of Texas (Dallas): United States of America v. Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. The prosecution in the case has presented many internal Muslim Brotherhood documents from the 1980’s and early 1990’s that give a first-ever public view of the history and ideology behind the operations of the Muslim Brothers (known as the Ikhwan or The Group) in the U.S. over the past four decades. For researchers, the documents have the added weight of being written by the Ikhwan leaders themselves, rather than interpretations of secondary sources.

The report shows the "Smoking Gun" threat of the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots such as the Islamic Association of Palistine and Hamas.

Fitzgerald: Israel, Bush, Pape, and the Infidel Man's Burden

"Middle East expert Martin Kramer suggests that Pape's theses may be comforting to Western readers who want to believe that if only the United States were to pull its military forces from the Persian Gulf and if only all occupation in the Middle East would end, that there would be no more suicide bombings." -- from this article

This is exactly what successive Israeli governments have done -- none as horrifically as the present government, of course -- in believing in negotiations, and Israeli concessions, and Israeli silences about Israel's legal, moral, and historic claim, and Israeli silence, or still worse wilful ignorance, about the texts, tenets, attitudes of Islam that explain the war against Israel. That war has no end, has no "solution," but can be contained, if only the Israeli government, and other Infidel governments, see things aright and do nothing to encourage Arab and Muslim triumphalism, do nothing further to whet, not sate, Arab appetites, and recognize the grim truth that it is not through concessions, but only through overwhelming, implacable superiority in power, and especially military power, that the Arabs and Muslims will, most unwillingly, most begrudgingly, and, as they see it, "temporarily," accept the situation. But if they are given further concessions, resulting in further Israeli weakness, they will never acquiesce, never accept even "temporarily" the existence of Israel.

The peace can be kept, but only if Israel recognizes the peace-keeping will be done on the basis of the Arab and Muslim acceptance of the principle of "Darura" -- Necessity. (Google "Darura" for more.)
And just as in Israel, in the United States, and in many other Infidel lands, those who have a duty to instruct and protect others would much prefer to believe that the menace comes not from those who understand Islam, but who “misunderstand” it, or who take an “extreme” rather than perfectly orthodox view of its teachings. They have convinced themselves that Muslims have a discrete and legitimate list of complaints, and if only we meet them half-way, and show that we are willing to recognize and meet those complaints, all manner of things shall be well. And since we have it in our power not to change Islam, it is comforting to believe, to convince oneself to believe, that it is not Islam’s texts and tenets and attitudes that explain the Muslim sense of grievance -- a grievance that we do not everywhere give in to their demands -- but rather something else, such as Israeli behavior, or our behavior, or the French laic state not permitting hijabs, or the inability, apparently, of every Infidel land to integrate its Muslim population even though it somehow manages to do so with its Buddhists, its Hindus, its Confucians, its Bolivian Indians, its everyone-but-Muslims.

So we assume, without naming it, the endless Infidel Man's Burden. We take their demands, and their assurances that if “only” this happens, or that happens, all will be well. There is no evidence of this. All the evidence goes the other way. In the long history of Israeli military victories, and of Israeli concessions matched by nothing on the other side at the negotiating table, and of every single treaty between Israel and the Arabs sooner or later being breached, in major part or wholly, by the Arab Muslim side, there has never been an example that supports this apparently endless faith -- by Bush, by Rice -- in negotiations and “treaties.” They have never heard the word “Hudaibiyya.” They have never read Majid Khadduri’s “War and Peace in the Law of Islam.” They are under the innocent impression that the basis for Western treaty-making -- Pacta Sunt Servanda (Treaties Are To Be Obeyed) -- is not a Western, or at least non-Muslim, principle, but a universal principle. They are quite wrong, and quite ignorant. And apparently those to whom they go, or upon whom they rely, for advice on Islam are also ignorant. Or perhaps they are deliberate apologists for, collaborators with, the forces of Islam. Such, certainly, is how one would describe John Esposito, or 90% of the members of MESA Nostra, the “professional organization” for academics specializing in Islam and the Middle East.

And besides, when the party being asked to make tangible sacrifices is not you, your country, but tiny Israel, which has no choice but to be a part of the West, to be a loyal ally, it is easier to ask for those concessions. It is easier to put pressure, easier to overlook the claims, legal, moral, and historic, of that tiny ally. It is easy to believe, to allow oneself to believe, those smiling daggers-and-dishdasha Arabs, hawks on hand, offering their fabled luxe (paid for by oil revenues, not by hard work) to a most impressionable Westerner taking “a leadership role,” and confusing wealth with real power to him at some “desert ranch.” (The wealth is not the result of an industrious, and entrepreneurial population, but merely reflects an accident of geology.) And it is they who have told Bush that “if he pressures Israel enough,” then “after that peace treaty is signed” all kinds of good things will happen. You’ll see. Trust us. It’s all so obvious. It’s all so ludicrous. It’s all so infuriating.

Good God. It’s all so absurd, and all so obvious.

And it is the same with the robert-papes of this world.They haven’t studied Islam. I doubt if Pape has ever read ten, much less a few hundred, of the hadith. I doubt if he understands the role of Muhammad as exemplary figure, uswa hasana, al-insan al-kamil. I don’t think he has thought much about what it must be like to have the Qur’an as the source of authority, supplemented only by the hadith and Sira. I don’t think he quite grasps Islam, or possesses the imaginative sympathy (in its etymological sense) to realize what it is like to grow up within a society suffused with Islam, a society that is in which almost nothing else really matters. I don’t think he takes ideology seriously, for he is an American. He believes, in the end, that ideas don’t really matter. He believes that with the curious fervor of those who do not recognize the Marxism-cum-Free-Market-Fundamentalism that is the American ideology, the one which believes that everyone in the world is motivated by economics (so that “prosperity” or “employment” would remove the menace from Muslims), and that the “Free Market” is the answer to everything, no matter how complicated the question might be.

He’s a dope with a doctorate. He’s not the only one. They’re all over the place.

Clarifying the meaning of Jihad


Tuesday, 13 May 2008 ‘Jihad’ is extracted from the source, ‘Jaahada’ and it measured upon the fourth verb structure, which means interaction between two sides, al-Mufa’ala. Another example is ‘Al-Khisaam’ which means to quarrel and is extracted from its roots source – Khaasama. Also, there is the example of ‘Jidaal’, which means to discuss or to argue and is taken from the root source ‘Jaadala’.


In the tongue of the Arabs, al-Jihad means, ‘exerting ability and effort to do an action or express opinions’.

In Al-Munjid, the words Jaahada, Mujaahada and Jihadan means, ‘exerting effort and ability to push the other away’. In the Tafseer of al-Naysaboori it is clearly stated that ‘al-Jihad’ means to exert effort to achieve the objective or what is intended.

After all of these related definitions of the word ‘al-Jihad’ in the language, it is possible to give a clear linguistic definition, which is: ‘al-Jihad is the exerting of all effort and ability between two sides by the least.’

Based on the linguistic definition, the exerted effort could be via material weapons or without a weapon, with money or without money. Also it could be the struggle between two opposing desires exerting effort (Jihad) to overcome the other. It could also be by words and could be by refusing to do an action or to speak. An example of this is like the one who disobeys his parents when they order him to disobey Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) and the person becomes patient and perseveres when his parents insist in ordering him. And it is like the one who abstains from committing a haram desire when his nafs calls him to it. This is what is mentioned in Hashiyat Al-Jamal in al-Jalalayn: “Jihad is to have patience on difficulties. It could be during war and it could be inside the nafs.”

Based on this linguistic definition, the opponent that the Muslim engages Jihad against could be his own nafs, or the shaiytan, or the transgressor or the kuffar. Additionally, by this definition, Jihad could also be that which is in the way of Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) ‘Fi Sabeel Lillah’’. So the Jihad could be undertaken to please Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) or to please the shaiytan, like the Jihad of the Kuffar against others. Al-Naysaboori, wrote, “It is exerting effort to achieve the objective or what is intended regardless of the nature of the objective intended by the one who is exerting the effort.” The Quran used the word ‘Jihad’ in describing the activity of the kaafir fathers to make their believing children reject true belief. Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) says:

وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ عَلى أَن تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا

“If they do Jihad to make commit association with me…do not obey them” (tmq Surah Luqman 31:15)

In the Shariyah, the word ‘al-Jihad’ was transferred from the general linguistic meaning to a special confined (restricted) meaning in the Quran and the Sunnah. It is, “the exerting of the effort to fight in the Way of Allah directly or by financial aid, or opinion and the like” This special meaning of Jihad was given in Medina. In Mecca, the legislation concerning Jihad was not revealed and that is why the subject of Jihad in the Mecci surahs carries the general linguistic meaning. They are the three verses (ayaat) in Surah al-Ainkaboot:

وَمَن جَاهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِين

“And if any struggle ‘Jaahid’ (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation.” (tmq 29:6)

وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا إِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

“But if they (either of them) struggle ‘Jaahada’ (to force) you to join with Me (in worship) anything of which you have no knowledge, obey them not. You have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did.” (tmq 29:8)

وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمَعَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

“And those who strive in Our cause ‘Jaahadu’- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right.” (tmq 29:69)

Also in surah Luqman verse 15, the word Jihad is used in the linguistic context. Regarding the verse in surah Al-Nahl talking about Jihad, it mentioned ‘al-Hijra’, which means that this is a Madani verse in a Mecci surah (chapter) – and this was mentioned by the al-Mufasiroon. The verse is:

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُواْ مِن بَعْدِ مَا فُتِنُواْ ثُمَّ جَاهَدُواْ وَصَبَرُواْ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِن بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

“But verily Your Lord- those who leave their homes after trials and persecutions,- and who thereafter struggle ‘Jaahadu’ and fight for the faith and patiently persevere,- Your Lord, after all this is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful”. (tmq 16:110)

The subject of Jihad in Medina occurs 26 (twenty-six) times and the majority of them carry the clear meaning of Fighting, ‘Qitaal’. From these verses are:

لاَّ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُوْلِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فَضَّلَ اللّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ دَرَجَةً وَكُـلاًّ وَعَدَ اللّهُ الْحُسْنَى وَفَضَّلَ اللّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا

“Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah has granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). To all (in Faith) has Allah promised good. But those who strive and fight has He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward.” (tmq 4:95)

It is clear in this verse that al-Jihad is in the meaning of going out to fight and that it is better than staying at home. Also from the verses about Jihad in surah Al-Tawba:

انْفِرُواْ خِفَافًا وَثِقَالاً وَجَاهِدُواْ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

“Go forth, (whether equipped) lightly or heavily, and strive and struggle, with your goods and your persons, in the cause of Allah. That is best for you, if you (but) knew.” (tmq 9:41)

The order of ‘Nafr’ (going out) means that Jihad is fighting.

لَـكِنِ الرَّسُولُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مَعَهُ جَاهَدُواْ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ لَهُمُ الْخَيْرَاتُ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

“But the Messenger, and those who believe with him, strive and fight with their wealth and their persons: for them are (all) good things: and it is they who will prosper.” (tmq 9:88)

Also in surah Al-Saf, after mentioning fighting (Jihad) at the beginning, Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) says:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُم بُنيَانٌ مَّرْصُوصٌ

“Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure.” (tmq 61:4)

It is clear in the Madani verses that the subject of Jihad is specifically related to fighting and what fighting entails naturally from finance, weapons and the like. Also these verses demonstrate aspects of the conditions that precede the action of fighting and are conditional for its legality i.e. propagating the invitation for non-Muslims to embrace Islam (as this is the original condition for fighting as has been mentioned in ‘Mughni al-Muhtaj) and/or accept the Islamic authority over them. From the Sunnah of Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam), Jihad has been mentioned also with this shariyah meaning i.e. fighting and what it entails.

On the authority of Abi Hurayrah, who said: “People asked, “Oh Rasoolallah, tell us about an action that is equal to the Jihad fi Sabeel Lillah?” Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “You will not find it bearable.” They replied, “Tell us oh Rasoolallah, maybe we can be able to withstand it.” Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The example of a mujahid Fi Sabeel Lillah is like the fasting man, the one who stays up at its night and prays and the one who is obedient to the verses of Allah, does not get tired of fasting, nor stops sadaqah until the mujahid returns back to his family.”

It is clear from the wording of the hadith that the question was about the mujahid with the meaning of the fighter in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah) specifically. The answer also indicated the same meaning when Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Until the mujahid returns back to his family” i.e. returns back from the fighting. Also by the authority of Jaabir, that the people asked Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam), “Which Jihad is better?” He (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The one in which one’s horse is wounded and one’s blood is split in it.” On the authority of ibn Abbas, he said that Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “When your brothers were killed in the battle of Uhud, Allah put their souls inside green birds that wonder inside Jannah landing on the rivers of Jannah and eats from its fruits. When they see how they spend their time and they look at their food and drink and how great it was, they say, ‘How we wish that our people know about how Allah rewarded us, so that they may love Jihad and not refrain from it.’ So then Allah says to them that, ‘I will tell you people and your brothers on your behalf.’ So they became happy with that news.” Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) sent this in surah Al-Imran on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud:

وَلاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاء عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ

“Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.” (tmq 3:169)

From all of these shariyah texts, it is clear that the Legislator transferred the word Jihad from its general linguistic meaning to a special meaning, which is ‘al-Qitaal’ (fighting) and whatever is linked to it directly and indirectly, as has been mentioned earlier. Moreover, it relates to the words, which carry the same meaning of al-Jihad like war. From this we can see that the shariyah texts defined Jihad as fighting (qitaal) in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah) and this can be found in the books of fiqh, which dealt with the shariyah meaning of Jihad and laws related to it.

In Badi’ul Sanai’ of the Hanafi Mazhab, it states the following: “Jihad in the language is exerting effort. In the understanding of the Shara, it is exerting effort and energy in fighting fi sabeel lillah by nafs, finance, tongue or another.”

In Manhul Jaleel of the Maliki Mazhab, al-Jihad is defined as the, “fighting by a Muslim against a kaafir (who does not have a treaty with the Muslims) to make the word of Allah the highest…. or for a Muslim to arrive to do Jihad or to enter the Kaafir’s land for fighting.” Ibn Arafa defined this.

According to the Shafi Mazhab in Al-Iqna, Jihad is fighting ‘Fi Sabeel Lillah’. Al-Shirazi in Al-Muhazab said that Jihad is ‘qitaal’.

In Al-Mughni according to the Hanbali Mazhab, Ibn Qudama did not give any other definition. In the section ‘kitab ul-Jihad’ whatever is related to war, whether it was fard ul-kifaya (collective obligation) or fard ul-ayn (individual obligation) or whether it was in the form of guarding the believers from the enemy and the guards ‘ribat’ at the borders, all of this is connected to Jihad. He also said, “If the enemy arrives, Jihad becomes fard ul-ayn on the murabitoon (border guards). If it becomes evident that the enemy arrived, then they do not leave to meet them except by an order of the Ameer, since the Ameer is the one who has the authority for issuing orders in the matters of war.”

So it is clear that the meaning of Jihad was transferred from the linguistic to the shariyah meaning, such that it was understood to mean fighting and nothing else. Such purity and clarity over its meaning today is clearly vague, from what is heard from the lips of rulers over the Islamic lands and even amongst the Muslim ummah itself, as a result of the dominance and pollution of western political thought and reeling from a defeatist mentality that seeks to be apologetic.

So what emerged and dominated the opinion were those who sincerely but incorrectly took Jihad as the rule for all matters whilst others reduced Jihad as a matter connected to defending the ‘nafs’ and identity i.e. defensive fighting as opposed to offensive fighting. Others went further to say that Jihad is of the ‘nafs’ and overcoming desires only, calling it the ‘Great Jihad’, further saying that it is better than the small Jihad which is ‘qitaal’ (fighting). Such are those that have become lazy and feeble, with their hearts filled with the fear of the enemy.

So the protection of the Deen, hatred of the Kuffar and the love of Jihad has become replaced with the protection of the nation-state (nationalism), pleasing the colonialists and the love of excessive material gain. Since these incorrect concepts have become common between Muslims and the clear definition of Jihad is absent from the minds, the incentive and love to do Jihad, for many, has died (though the increased hostility and aggression of the western nations in the Islamic lands has served to re-kindle the correct desire).

It is, therefore, naturally important to clarify this matter such that the Muslims are able to refute the erroneous misunderstandings that exist, refute false claims and rekindle the love of Jihad.

Greater/Smaller Jihad

Firstly, the common understanding of Muslims is that Jihad is divided into two sections: Jihad ul-Akbar (the ‘Greater Jihad’), which is connected to Jihad ul-Nafs i.e. fighting the inner desires and shaiytan etc… Jihad ul-Asghar (the ‘Smaller Jihad’), which is fighting the kaafir enemy in battles and what is related to it.

Of the evidences that are quoted from the Islamic texts, the main one is the hadith, where Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “We have arrived from the small Jihad to the great Jihad”. So they asked, “What is the great Jihad?” He (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “It is Jihad ul-Nafs (against the inner self).”

In another narration, Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) referred to the “…Jihad of the slave against his desires.”

Though it is correct that there is a Jihad against the nafs, like against shaiytan, however, it is not greater in the sight of Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) from the physical Jihad against the Kuffar and it (Jihad ul-Nafs) does not cancel nor invalidate it.

This Jihad against the Kaafir enemies is continuous until the Day of Judgment as is the Jihad against the nafs also continuous until the Day of Judgement. But one should know that the evidences of doing Jihad against the nafs are different to the evidences of Jihad against the Kuffar.

Each has a situation different from the other (context) and it is not permitted to mix the two or to use the evidence of one for the other or to change one in place of the other. Rather there is a need for each, but in its correct context and each of them is a responsibility when put in their correct contexts.

This is why saying that ‘Jihad ul-nafs’ is better and greater in the sight of Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) is both very dangerous and an outright mistake, which contradicts the understanding of Jihad in the Way of Allah.

It is invalid from many angles:

1. Jihad has two meanings as mentioned previously, a linguistic and a shariyah meaning. Jihad of the nafs comes under the linguistic meaning and not the shariyah meaning.

2. The evidences used to say that Jihad ul-nafs is greater than Jihad against the Kuffar cannot be used to prove this and this is clear from the reality of the evidences that are used. This is because,

a. The hadith is ‘mardood riwayatan’

b. The hadith is ‘mardood dirayatan’

With regards to its invalidation from narration that is because the hadith is weak ‘Da’eef’ as is clarified in Al-Ajmi Al-Saghir by Imam Suyuti. As for its invalidation by meaning that is because it is contradicting definite text, which makes Jihad Fi Sabeel Lillah obligatory and makes it the greatest of action.

This can be seen from three aspects:

a. The verses that mention the value of the Jihad Fi Sabeel Lillah and that it is from the best actions like the verse:

لاَّ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُوْلِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فَضَّلَ اللّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ دَرَجَةً وَكُـلاًّ وَعَدَ اللّهُ الْحُسْنَى وَفَضَّلَ اللّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا

“Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah has granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). To all (in Faith) has Allah promised good. But those who strive and fight has He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward.” (tmq 4:95)

b. The verses that praise Jihad and the Mujahideen Fi Sabeel Lillah like the verse,

لَـكِنِ الرَّسُولُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مَعَهُ جَاهَدُواْ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ لَهُمُ الْخَيْرَاتُ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

“But the Messenger, and those who believe with him, strive and fight with their wealth and their persons: for them are (all) good things: and it is they who will prosper.” (tmq 9:88)

إِنَّ اللّهَ اشْتَرَى مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الجَنَّةَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ أَوْفَى بِعَهْدِهِ مِنَ اللّهِ فَاسْتَبْشِرُواْ بِبَيْعِكُمُ الَّذِي بَايَعْتُم بِهِ وَذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

“Allah has purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Quran: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.” (tmq 9:111)

c. The verses that condemn and promises punishment to those who do not participate in Jihad, the ones left behind and the lazy neglectful ones,

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ انفِرُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ اثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى الأَرْضِ أَرَضِيتُم بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مِنَ الآخِرَةِ فَمَا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فِي الآخِرَةِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلٌ

“O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that, when you are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, you cling heavily to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter.” (tmq 9:38)

In addition to this are the sayings of Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) that the best action to Allah is Jihad Fi Sabeel Lillah and the fighting (qitaal) against the Kuffar: From the many narrations, Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, ”Taking a journey in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah) is better than the duniya and what is in it.”

“Those who guard (the borders) for one day in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah) is better than the duniya and what is in it.” ”If anyone takes a position in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah) it is better than his prayer ‘salah’ in his house for 70 years. Don’t you want Allah to forgive you your sins and enter you in the Jannah? Invade, in the Way of Allah (Fi Sabeel Lillah).”

Therefore what has been mentioned in the text shows clearly that Jihad Fi Sabeel Lillah is one of the best actions and of the highest degree, which is clearly shown by the shariyah indicators, ‘Qarain’, that connect praise, condemnation, reward and punishment to expose the fact that Jihad Fi Sabeel Lillah is greater and better than Jihad against the nafs. This is why the hadith is invalid in meaning ‘dirayatan’ because it contradicts the definite texts and therefore it is invalid ‘baatil’ to use as an evidence (i.e. to show that Jihad ul-nafs is a greater action).

Is Jihad defensive only?

As for the opinion that Jihad in Islam is defensive and not offensive by using the evidence (and similar evidences):

وَإِنْ جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

“But if the enemy incline towards peace, do you (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah: for He is One that Hears and Knows (all things)” (tmq 8:61)

وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

“Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loves not transgressors.” (tmq 2:190)

This is also incorrect and invalid for its application upon this matter is incorrect for the following reasons:

1. The evidences of Jihad are general ‘mutlaq’ evidences and include all offensive and defensive actions e.g. waging war to pre-empt an attack, to protect the borders, killing on the battlefield. To restrict or specify the evidences only to defensive and not offensive Jihad, requires a textual evidence to show that the Jihad is restricted to defensive Jihad only. And there is no such text in the Quran or the Sunnah that restricts or specifies this. Therefore, the evidences regarding Jihad remain general and to be used for all types of war and all types of fighting with the enemy. So it is invalid (baatil) to use the verse,

وَإِن جَنَحُواْ لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا

“But if the enemy incline towards peace, do you…” (tmq 8:61), to show that Jihad is only defensive.

That is also the case with the rest of the evidences that are used by proponents of this erroneous understanding. This and similar verses cannot be used to specify or restrict the generality of the verses in surah al-Tawba because they were the last verses revealed regarding Jihad and what came prior to these verses regarding Jihad does not specify the verses which were revealed after them or came afterwards. And the verse does not restrict the latter revealed verses either. There has to be a text present to restrict or specify the general verse and they also must be revealed after the initial, which are general or mutlaq or even they (i.e. those verses which are restricted or specific) should be mentioned together with the general verses so that the two situations can be shown (i.e. to show the different situations upon which they apply). So Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) says: وَإِن جَنَحُواْ لِلسَّلْمِ , which is regarding the time of the peace. And He (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) says,

قَاتِلُواْ الَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّهِ وَلاَ بِالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَلاَ يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ اللّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَلاَ يَدِينُونَ دِينَ الْحَقِّ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَابَ حَتَّى يُعْطُواْ الْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَاغِرُونَ

“Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued”, (tmq 9:29) which is at the time of war and fighting.

So peace and fighting are two situations, which remain un-abrogated, i.e. neither abrogates the other.

2. In addition to this, the saying and actions of Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) show that Jihad definitely is to start (offensive) fighting the kuffar to make the Words of Allah the highest and to propagate (da’wa) the call of Islam. Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,

“I have been ordered to fight the people until they bear witness that, ‘there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger’ and they establish the prayer and the zakat. And if they do this, then from me is protected their blood and their wealth except by the right granted by Allah.”

As for his (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) actions, they are full of actions that show Jihad is to start the fighting. So when he went out to Badr to take the caravan belonging to the Quraysh, this was going out to fight, this is offensive – as Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) initiated the action before the Quraysh.

Likewise, when Muhammad (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) invaded Hawazin in the battle of Hunayn, when he (Salalahu Alaihi Wasallam) seiged Ta’if and the battle of Mutah to fight the Romans and the Battle of Tabuk – all of these are evidences to show that Jihad is to start fighting kuffar (offensive). This should clarify the erroneous view that in origin Jihad is defensive.

3. From Ijma as-Sahabah, it is clear that Jihad is fighting Fi Sabeel Lillah to carry Islam and that it is offensive. The evidence, which is sufficient to explain this, is the opening of Iraq, Persia, Sham, Egypt and North Africa. They were all opened at the time of the Sahabah with their Ijma’ (consensus). Therefore, all what we mentioned are sufficient evidences to refute the claim that Jihad is defensive.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Muslims should gain the confidence to present the reality of Jihad to our ummah and raise the level of thinking on this issue such that the Muslims become clearer about its meaning, obligation, gain an increased love for it and importantly, understand the contexts in which it exists and is applied.

The Islamic Ummah, served with the responsibility to present and guard Islam should not allow the rulers over the Islamic lands to pollute the meaning of Jihad and remove its love from the hearts of the believers. Indeed, the Islamic Ummah should not allow these rulers to commit the greater crime to rule over her by other than Islam and dilute the purity of the whole of Islam with their shamelessness, implementation of kufr and humiliating subservience to a part of the creation i.e. their colonial masters, instead of their subservience to the Creator and Master of all that is seen and unseen, Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala).

As for the interaction with the non-Muslims, it is important that the Muslims have the clarity and strength to tackle the malicious, incorrect and hateful propaganda that is focussed on Jihad that is presented as barbaric against peaceful people with the objective to force them to embrace Islam by compulsion and the sword.

The Islamic ummah should tackle this from two perspectives.

Firstly, the Muslims should expose the violent, barbaric and inhumane foreign policy of the ‘civilised’ colonial powers that have destroyed nations, states and people; left millions to starve for the sake of securing capitalist interests, appointed and protected oppressive regimes that suppress the will of their people; plundered resources of the lesser developed and invade lands with brute force, terrorising the local civilian people with indiscriminate policies of killing, imprisonment, rape, ‘carpet bombing’; razing whole villages and towns into the ground; and forcing the people to adopt their life-styles, values and political structures. What right do such people have after witnessing the implementation of such a wicked and brutal foreign policy with their own eyes – in South America, Africa, Palestine, Afghanistan and more recently in Iraq, from the various credible news sources – to even begin laying a criticism against Jihad.

Non-Muslims need to see the reality of their own governments and not be blinded the hysterical and deceitful propaganda that increasingly is aimed at Islam and its values.

Secondly, Muslims should demonstrate some of the rules that surround Jihad and state that offensively carrying the struggle against non-Islam does not permit Muslims to compel the local people to embrace Islam. This is because Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala) does not allow compulsion:

لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ

"There is no compulsion in deen" (tmq 2:256)

Likewise Islam does not allow the exploitation, plundering, razing and desecration of places of worship, people’s homes and honour – when Jihad is carried offensively. Rather Jihad is carried offensively to cleanse the earth from the kufr, with the implementation of Islam as a system thus liberating man from the rule of man. The history of the Islamic conquests, the presence of Christians and Jews, who lived in security and prosperity under the Islamic State and the safe-haven that the Islamic authority provided for people savaged by the forefathers of the modern colonialists is sufficient proof for this.

On the horizon, as the struggle between Iman and kufr increases day by day – it is imperative for the Muslims to hold to the truth of Islam, its rules and not permit the dilution of its intellectual wealth – a wealth which soon will transform the darkness of colonial rule to the mercy and shade of the Islamic authority, Al-Khilafah, by Allah (Subhanna Wa Ta'ala's) permission.

The jihad of the word



The signs have been ominous for some time but now it has become clear beyond a doubt that those who tell the truth about Islam, Islamism or Islamist terrorism risk having their career, livelihood and maybe even their liberty placed in jeopardy – and all in the name of human rights. In Canada, the columnist Mark Steyn has been arraigned before a kangaroo court for the crime of publishing in Macleans magazine an excerpt from his bestseller, America Alone, in which he argues that demographic change is turning Europe Islamic. Led by the Canadian Islamic Congress, Muslims have taken Steyn and Macleans to a ‘human rights’ tribunal on a charge of ‘hate speech’, a totalitarian statute enforced by the Canadian Human Rights Commission (sic) who are in the business of destroying the freedom to voice perfectly legitimate – indeed, absolutely vital and important – opinions about the need to defend western society against Islamist attack. Bad enough that Islamists browbeat and threaten people who express such opinions. For a body such as the CHRC to do their dirty work for them and act as the enforcers of the jihad against free speech takes us straight into the nightmare landscape of Kafka. Read this article to get a flavour of the terrifying nature of these proceedings, the mixture of gross abuse of power, mad thinking and clownish incompetence which characterises totalitarian regimes and has been playing in a courtroom in downtown British Columbia. Perhaps the most chilling observation of all is this:
The Canadian Human Rights Commission, which enforces the act, has a record of conviction that recalls the awful efficiency of Soviet courts: In over three decades of existence, the commission has yet to find someone innocent.
This article spells out in more detail how the Canadian human rights tribunals have been handed unfettered power to abuse power:
The human-rights tribunals are a censor’s dream. Under Canada’s human-rights act, commissioners can convict if they believe any published material is “likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt.” Since they are “remedial” institutions and not real courts, they need not follow strict legal procedures or grant traditional rights of the accused. No one goes to prison, but the panels can fine and silence people at will — and run up the lawyer bills for years. Truth is no defense, and commissioners are authorized to confiscate a computer without a warrant. Evidence can be woefully flimsy.
But this appalling development is not confined to Canada. A few days ago the UN decided to outlaw any criticism of Islamism – as defined by the Islamists themselves. Since they classify any criticism whatsoever of Islamist aggression as ‘Islamophobic’, this means that the UN will outlaw all such comment. As Jeffrey Imm has reported on CounterterrorismBlog:
On June 16, 2008 UNHRC president Doru Romulus Costea announced that criticism of Sharia law will not be tolerated by the UNHRC, based on the complaints and pressure by Islamist delegates to the UNHRC. In effect, the Islamist nations represented at the UNHRC have effected a Jihad against freedom of speech at the United Nations when it comes to criticizing Sharia or Islamic supremacist (aka Islamist) theocratic ideologies that threaten the freedom and lives of innocents around the world. This again demonstrates the key imperative of control for Islamists -- in this case in terms of controlling ideas, thoughts, and words of an international organization intended to promote human rights. Outgoing UNHRC Commissioner Louise Arbour subsequently raised concerns about debates on Sharia becoming 'taboo' within the United Nations group, stating that it 'should be, among other things, the guardian of freedom of expression.'

The UNHRC ban on debate regarding Sharia came as a result of a three minute joint statement by the Association for World Education with the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) to the Human Rights Council on women's rights and the impact of Sharia law. These NGOs sought to address international issues of violence against women, specifically, the stoning of women, 'honor killings' of women, and female genital mutilation, as a result of Sharia law.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Arab Republic of Egypt vehemently criticized this attempted NGO message, interrupting it via ‘16 points of order’, for an hour and twenty-five minutes per the IEHU. Jihad Watch provides a full transcript of the debate. The Egyptian UNHRC delegate claimed that silencing these NGOs was necessary to ensure ‘that Islam will not be crucified in this Council,’ but the fact is that Islamist forces seek to silence any debate on Sharia at all -- anywhere, any time.
This is of course merely the latest demonstration that the UN is now simply a club of tyranny. But the really frightening thing is the almost total indifference to these developments by the western media. So quick to take up the cause of free speech when the protagonists are the enemies of the west, they are all but silent when the freedom to speak in defence of western values is snuffed out. That of course is because the freedom of speech lobby marches behind the banners of ‘human rights’ and minority victim culture which, despite their mind-bending self-designation as ‘progressive’ attitudes, constitute nothing other than a full-out onslaught against western values by cultural Marxism -- now marching shoulder to shoulder with the Islamists in their common cause to destroy the free world. Their ranks include a distressingly large number of useful idiots, who for a variety of reasons – posturing vanity, conformist inanity, shallow ignorance, careerism, fear, whatever – are helping to further the jihad against the free world, which is predicated upon precisely this kind of cultural and moral confusion.

From the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and the burning of his book to the murder and mayhem unleashed over the Mohammed cartoons, it has long been clear that dictating what can and cannot be said is a key salient of the Islamist onslaught. It is thus of the utmost importance that freedom of speech is upheld. But both in the Rushdie affair and over the Mohammed cartoons, alas, much of the free world capitulated and even bought into the rhetoric of Islamist suppression, blaming both Rushdie and the cartoons for stepping over a permitted line. The same kind of people are now turning on Mark Steyn. But he has not stepped over the line. He is trying to hold it. The Canadian thought-police who would bring him down will surely bring the rest of us down with him.

As the pressure group Liberty and its latter-day prophet David Davis prance about Britain with their preposterous assertion that extending detention for terror suspects will destroy ancient liberties, we might well ask why not a peep has been heard from them about these recent developments and the real threat to freedom from the jihad of the word.

Jihad and Outreach to Islamic Supremacist Groups


One of the most critical aspects of a strategic battle against the ideology behind Jihad, Islamic supremacism, is an honest definition of the term "civil rights and civil liberties." "Civil rights" are based on the American value of equality - that all men and women are created equal - a value that Islamic supremacism as an ideology does not embrace. So when federal government agencies claim to be making outreach efforts to organizations that espouse and/or support Islamic supremacist viewpoints -- such outreach efforts are actually contrary to America values of "civil rights," not promoting "civil rights."

As I mentioned in my July 2 article "The Struggle against Jihad and Supremacist Ideologies," the FBI aggressively engaged in a "war of ideas" against white supremacists. The FBI sought no guidance from white supremacist non-violent organizations in that war. It used the FBI COINTELPRO to spy on and disrupt white supremacist groups, and it used contacts in the media to discredit and demoralize white supremacist groups. The FBI did so because the war on white supremacism was a battle to defend equality as an American value itself, and white supremacism was inimical to equality. The war against supremacism was a war for equality as realized through civil rights.

So the July 10, 2008 Congressional Quarterly's (CQ) article "Experts Debate Efficacy of FBI Outreach to CAIR" should raise deep concerns among advocates for civil rights as well as anti-Jihadists. Why would any federal government agency defend outreach to a group whose leaders support Islamic supremacist organizations? The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is an unindicted co-conspirator in Holy Land Foundation (HLF) terror trial involving funding and material support to the Hamas Islamic supremacist organization. CAIR's incorporator and current executive director, Nihad Awad, is a documented supporter ("I am in support of the Hamas movement") of the Hamas Islamic supremacist organization. The Islamic supremacist group Hamas has a charter which incorporates the antisemitic Protocols of Elders of Zion (in Hamas charter, Article 32), promoted by Adolf Hitler in his "Mein Kampf." Moreover, as the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) has pointed out, "CAIR has co-sponsored and taken part in multiple Islamist conferences in the United States." During last summer's HLF trial, the IPT also reported that CAIR was identified by the FBI as part of the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestine Committee; the Muslim Brotherhood is another Islamic supremacist organization whose founder called for the creation of a global Islamic caliphate. The real debate is not on CAIR itself, which IPT has thoroughly documented, but on the whether or not to acknowledge Islamic supremacism as an ideological basis for Jihad.


Ignoring the ideological basis of Islamic supremacism in Jihad prevents an honest debate on such issues, as well as an honest discussion of civil rights and liberties. Outreach efforts to pro-supremacist organizations have nothing to do with "civil rights and liberties," but are part of a more important choice between employing short-term tactical counterterrorism measures or defending our national values.


Concern in CAIR Training and Government Outreach Efforts to CAIR
The July 10, 2008 CQ article reports on a Senate Homeland Security panel where the subject of homegrown terrorism was being discussed and testimony was being provided by expert witnesses. In the course of this panel discussion, questions were raised regarding CAIR training efforts to FBI employees. The Hudson Institute's Zeyno Baran was quoted as stating "for months now, FBI agents have been trained by CAIR to be sensitive to Muslims... this is completely self-defeating." Zeyno Baran is also quoted as stating that "the agents are going to be misinformed and they will be overly sensitive and they will not ask certain questions," and later stating that CAIR "does not reflect the Muslim community as a faith community, but as a political group."

Such CAIR efforts to "train" FBI employees were reported by Insight on March 18, 2008: "CAIR trains FBI agents across the country on Islam and how to treat Muslims. CAIR's archived press releases show numerous instances of CAIR representatives training the FBI, as well as the Marine Corps, local law enforcement and government employees."

Such CAIR training for law enforcement has been reported since 2004. In 2004, CAIR's Florida branch, CAIR-FL, was reported to issue a statement that "more than 150 law enforcement agents, including FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force supervisory personnel" attended a CAIR-led workshop.

In addition, such CAIR "training" has also been provided to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and CAIR's Ibrahim Hooper has stated that "representatives of CAIR chapters nationwide have met with TSA, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials on issues related to cultural sensitivity and national security and the Department of Justice."

The IPT's Steven Emerson also provided the Senate panel with a written statement which concludes on efforts at outreach towards CAIR:
"Despite the known ties of the above mentioned organizations [CAIR, MAS, ISNA] to the Muslim Brotherhood, the U.S. government insists on engaging in 'outreach' and dialogue with them. This has led to an almost comical situation in which one side of the Department of Justice labels CAIR as an unindicted coconspirator in what has been alleged to be the biggest case of terrorist financing in the history of the Republic while the other side of the Department of Justice meets with CAIR officials and attends CAIR conferences in an effort to perform outreach with the Muslim-American community. While it can be argued that outreach with the Muslim-American community is a necessary component to a successful counterterrorism strategy, there is absolutely no reason that this outreach has to go through organizations that ascribe to the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood. Alternatively, outreach can be performed at the grassroots level and through individuals respected in the Muslim-American community, like doctors and local businessmen, instead of through groups such as CAIR, ISNA, and MAS."
To show the level of disconnect within the federal government on these groups, while this Senate hearing was being held, the July 11, 2008 New York Sun reports that federal prosecutors were submitting court filings defending the identification of such organizations as co-conspirators in the HLF terror trial.


CAIR Defended by Apologist Seeking Engagement with Islamic Supremacist Groups
George Mason University Professor Peter Mandaville was also present at this Senate panel and reportedly disputed such links between CAIR and such Islamic supremacist groups. For context, Peter Mandaville has also been advising the West Point military that America should "engage" with the Islamic supremacist international organization the Muslim Brotherhood, and has stated that he does not view that Hamas is really a terrorist organization.

In the June 2008 issue of the West Point Military Academy's Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) publication "Sentinel," Peter Mandaville argues that Islamic supremacists are not a threat, but should be engaged as allies. In the West Point publication, Mr. Mandaville criticizes the idea that "the default assumption still appears to be that Islamism of any kind is more likely to be part of the problem rather than a potential component of counter-terrorism solutions."

Therefore, it is hardly surprising that Peter Mandaville would be arguing at the Senate Homeland Security panel that the outreach program to CAIR is something that the federal government should pursue.


The "Full-Spectrum" Outreach Strategy to Islamic Supremacism
At the same Senate hearing, National Counterrorism Center (NCTC) Director Michael Leiter referenced efforts to engage with groups such as CAIR, as part of a "full-spectrum" outreach strategy to engage with groups that disagree with U.S. policies. The July 10, 2008 CQ report quotes Mr. Leiter as stating that the hard line is "if a group espouses violence, it's quite clear that the U.S. government should not be associated with it."

In my May 16, 2008 article on Michael Leiter's confirmation hearing, I pointed out that Mr. Leiter views that one of his primary qualifications in fighting terrorist tactics is his legal experience and his "respect for civil liberties." Under Mr. Leiter's leadership, the NCTC has worked to do anything but engage in a "war of ideas," as vaguely promised during his confirmation hearing, but has instead promoted "terror lexicon" recommendations to avoid defining the enemy, such as "never use the term 'jihadist' or 'mujahideen'."

His "full-spectrum" outreach approach is basically to appease "non-violent" Islamic supremacism, which is quickly becoming the official policy of the current administration.

We saw such an appeasement strategy beginning last summer, when in the middle of the HLF terror trial, the Department of Justice (DOJ) decided to send representatives to the annual conference of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), another unindicted co-conspirator in HLF terror trial, while DOJ prosecutors were actively engaged in the HLF terror trial.
ISNA conference speakers included supporters of terror groups and character witnesses for convicted terrorists attacking America. Moreover, ISNA conference speakers included individuals supporting Islamic supremacism as:

-- Muzammil Siddiqi - thanked by the Hamas Islamic supremacist organization for his support

-- Siraj Wahhaj - a man who reportedly called for replacing the American government with a caliphate

-- Ihsan Bagby: "we [Muslims] can never be full citizens of this country... because there is no way we can be fully committed to the institutions and ideologies of this country."

-- Zaid Shakir: "Every Muslim who is honest would say, I would like to see America become a Muslim country"

In addition, we later learned that the FBI, U.S. Army, and the Department of Homeland Security attended the ISNA convention. The Department of Homeland Security booth at ISNA was located next to the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization's booth, a group dedicated to global Islamic supremacism.
During last summer's ISNA convention debacle, many of us made the tactical error of primarily arguing that it was inappropriate for DOJ members to offer legitimacy to an organization that was a co-conspirator in a terrorist trial. This argument was certainly correct. But the argument that then gets made by apologists for such groups is a factual debate over whether or not such groups are really linked to "terrorism" or not. This is essentially the same argument that Mr. Mandaville and Mr. Leiter made at the July 10 Senate hearing regarding CAIR. When we allow the debate to fall into the weeds of such details, the larger argument about defending our values gets lost.

The larger, more critical argument is that such efforts at outreach to supremacist organizations are not legitimate "civil rights" outreach at all. Anyone who has "respect for civil liberties," as Mr. Leiter alleges, would not seek federal government outreach to supremacist organizations. Supremacist organizations, by definition, represent the antithesis of civil rights, the antithesis of civil liberties; supremacist groups are against equality.

Would NCTC's Leiter seek an outreach effort to the American Nazi Party Aryan supremacist group? Would DHS' Sutherland seek an outreach effort to the White People's Party white supremacist group? Would such efforts be viewed as "full-spectrum" outreach efforts to promote civil rights and liberties? Of course not.

Yet Mr. Leiter argues in favor of a "full-spectrum" outreach to Islamic supremacist organizations as CAIR, and Mr. Sutherland gives speeches at ISNA conventions where known Islamic supremacists are featured speakers. Both men are proud of their records in respect for civil rights and liberties; both are educated, dedicated men who do understand that civil rights and liberties are about equality, not supremacism. They are well aware that the FBI did not go to George Wallace for training on how to handle white supremacists during the 1960s and 1970s.

So clearly, these outreach efforts to CAIR, ISNA, MAS, etc. have absolutely nothing to do with promoting equality in civil rights and civil liberties. This is an important false argument that we need to shatter. This continuing false argument -- that such "full-spectrum" outreach to Islamic supremacist groups is designed to promote civil rights and liberties -- keeps us from having the necessary debate on what is really happening and on identifying the tough decisions that our nation needs to make about defending our values.


A Values Debate, Not A Tactical Debate
So if such outreach to Islamic supremacist groups is not about civil rights and liberties, what is it about?

The NCTC, DHS, FBI, and Department of Justice have enforcement-level operational responsibilities at the core of their mission. With a primary tactical focus on a "war on terror," these organizations' emphasis is on preventing additional terrorist attacks and in gaining intelligence sources on individuals and groups that may be planning such terrorist attacks, using any means possible. At the same time, such organizations do not have a coherent strategy on understanding who and what we are fighting other than "extremists."

This is yet another disastrous symptom from the tactical-centric approach by the current administration in dealing with Jihad. The executive branch has focused exclusively on preventive measures and reactive tactics, rather than identifying the enemy and developing a comprehensive strategy, including identifying the ideology behind Jihad. Therefore, America's approach is one of growing appeasement and tolerance towards Islamic supremacist groups, if they appear "non-violent," despite the fact that Islamic supremacism provides the basis for Jihad actions. The basic concept is that such appeasement to "non-violent" Islamic supremacist groups will help avoid "incitement" of Muslims to join violent Jihadist groups.

It is the same failed "Gentlemen's Agreement" policy that the United Kingdom had with Islamic supremacists until the July 7, 2005 bombings, which the UK now seeks to reconstitute after having insufficient courage to battle the supremacist ideology itself.

But do such strategies represent America's identity and values? Do we want to become a country willing to appease and legitimize Islamic supremacist groups for potential short-term intelligence on terrorists? Will we sacrifice the concept that "all men and women are created equal" for tactical security maneuvers? Do we really believe that abandonment of our hard-won values in defending equality and rejecting supremacism will really work over time? Or will such a strategy effectively accomplish Islamic supremacists' goals in undermining who and what America is?
These are the questions that the nation and its future leadership must address. But to have this debate, we need to get out of the weeds in debating whether such "outreach" efforts are tainted due to details of whether or not a group or person was proven in a court of law to support a terrorist organization, and refocus the argument on condemning outreach to Islamic supremacist groups, simply because supremacist ideologies are against the values of equality that define who and what we are as a nation.


The Real FBI Values and Hope for the Future
In September 2007, after the ISNA conference debacle, the Senate Homeland Security commission once again had a panel to discuss domestic homeland security issues. As reported by the Washington Times, this panel was to address the "war of ideas." The DHS and NCTC leaders told Senator Lieberman that they had no such initiatives in such a "war of ideas," and clearly nothing has changed since. The Washington Times reported that "FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III revealed during the hearing that the FBI has no counterideology response other than its 'outreach' to Muslim-American communities so they 'understand the FBI' and address 'the radicalization issue'."

But it is important to understand that post 9/11-era FBI Director Mueller's comments do not represent the culture and the values of the FBI organization, but rather represent the failing tactical-centric whirlpool that has drained the creative thinking of executive branch agencies responsible for American security. The 100 year history of the FBI represents a different set of values altogether. In fact, the FBI has had a war of ideas against Communism, Nazism, and white supremacism. It is only in the present reactive administration that a war of ideas against Islamic supremacism is non-existent. Clearly the FBI and the country needs better leadership.

When you join the FBI, all employees (agents to clerks) are required to swear to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States, specifically:
"I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."
This oath is based on defending the values of equality and liberty that are the basis for our Constitution and our nation. It is complemented by the FBI's organizational values of "Fidelity-Bravery-Integrity" that form the FBI's motto.

I know this first hand, because I once made such an oath myself, and I remain proud of the values that the Bureau has inherent in its organization and in its many dedicated employees.

Unlike such new federal organizations as the DHS and NCTC, the FBI has a 100 year history of fighting for such values, and has a history in a war of ideas against supremacist ideologies. Americans who seek solutions in the fight against Islamic supremacism must consider the history of who has actually fought, understands, and defeated supremacist organizations. History shows this to be the FBI, in its efforts from the 1920s through today in fighting supremacist groups, especially in a war against white supremacism during the 1960s and 1970s.

Americans need to revisit these historical lessons and learn what a total war on a supremacist ideology can achieve, without sacrificing our ideals, values, and integrity. Post-9/11 reactive organizations and leaders who lack the history or understanding of what it takes to fight supremacist ideologies are doomed to continue down the failed path of reactive appeasement. We can't count on them for leadership or strategies.
It is essential that we intervene in this vital national security debate and use our representative democracy to change our nation's direction on Islamic supremacism. We must not tolerate the transparent fraud that appeasement of supremacist groups is being done in the interest of "civil rights." The American people and its historical institutions committed to the values of equality must change the debate on Islamic supremacism from legalisms to ideas, from operations to strategy, and from tactics to values.

America's battle cry against Islamic supremacism must be a resounding, defiant commitment to defending the value that "all men and women are created equal."

Then we will have begun to fight.

Again and again this phony business about "Lesser Jihad" and "Greater Jihad" keeps coming up, and we are carefully told that the "Greater Jihad" is the internal struggle of Muslims with their own consciences. But this is not quite what it seems.

First of all, Islam is based not on solicitousness for the individual, but concern for the collective of Believers, the Umma, and for furthering the interests not of a single soul but of the Great Cause: that of spreading Islam until it dominates everywhere. The individual Believer is akin to a recruit to an army. If he leaves, that is regarded as treason. His duty is that of mental submission -- no independent questioning, no comparing what his duties are with what reason, or morality, tell him should be his duties. His not to reason why, but to follow scrupulously the rules as to what is prohibited and what is commanded.

This "Greater Jihad" business is designed merely to convince Infidels that the real "Jihad" -- the "struggle" to remove all obstacles to the spread, and then to the dominance, of Islam -- is not that, but a lesser thing, something hovering in the background, while all attention should be focused on these individuals wrestling with their consciences. The weight of authority is completely on the other side. Qur'anic commentators and Muslim jurisconsults and Muslim historians all agree that the "Jihad" means that "struggle" to spread Islam, and that the "internal struggle" is simply a later invention by a few Muslim would-be reformers who realized that "Jihad" would not be wise or even possible in a world of overwhelmingly more powerful Infidels, and that therefore the idea should be given a different interpretation. Or at least they would try to do the impossible and hope that some Muslims might actually accept that interpretation.

But it never happened. Yet today, all kinds of security services in the Western world keep trying. They keep believing that if they stay away from the word "Jihad" and supply every other sort of word (hiraba, etc.), that somehow they will manage to convince Muslims in the West that the real Jihad is this "internal struggle." They are not only whistling in the dark, but are delaying the widespread recognition of what the "Jihad" is and why it matters among the very Infidels who need to recognize the meaning and menace (for them) of Islam in order to realize what is going on, and to support measures that otherwise might appear to them to be uncalled-for. Our security services and our political and media elites all over the Western world failed to understand Islam before the great unhindered migration of Muslims to the Lands of the Infidels began. That failure continues right up to the present, because few wish to think rationally about this problem, so fearful and confused does it make them. And then there are always the crazies, the ones who, in having sensed the threat, are incapable of soberly discussing it, but instead focus on the trivial or the tendentious -- "it's all the fault of lefties [Marxists, democrats, fill in your favorite epithet here].” And in their inarticulateness and political parti pris, and general uncultivated and comical ineptness, they simply allow others to more easily dismiss them.

This "Greater Jihad" and "Lesser Jihad" business comes from a single Hadith that is not judged authentic by the most authoritative muhaddithin, such as Bukhari and Muslim. Karen Armstrong, naturally, in her little guide to nothing called "Islam," quotes this hadith and makes much of it, without hinting at how little it means to Muslims. Of course, it is unclear if Armstrong understands what an isnad-chain is, or how the muhaddithin studied and ranked the hundreds of thousands of claimed Hadith (more correclty, ahadith), or how the muhaddithin themselves have been ranked according to their supposed authoritativeness.

This is never mentioned by the kind of Muslims who want to convince us that the "Jihad" is not what we think. They want us to believe that our understanding of the texts and our study of how Muslims, over 1350 years, acted on those texts reveals nothing about Jihad, and that the truth of it can be learned from latter-day Muslim propagandists. Those propagandists have to deal with an unprecedented situation -- that of millions of Muslims living within the Lands of the Infidels, the Bilad al-Kufr. They have to stave off any inquiry, or critical analysis, or study of, Islam that might lead Infidels, quite naturally, to become keenly worried -- as they discover that Islam is not a "religion" but also, and mainly, a politics and a geopolitics within a Total Belief-System that is based on the notion of uncompromising and permanent hostility between Believer and Infidel, a hostility that does not lessen if the Infidel moves heaven and earth to prove his own good will and surpassing generosity.

And, of course, those who report on such matters rarely think they have an obligation not merely to write down and transmit to others, as docile amanuenses, what is told them by Muslim propagandists, but to study Islam, and to question what they are told, and to learn enough so that, in such cases as the one above, they will be able to discuss this matter of the "Lesser Jihad" and the "Greater Jihad" precisely in the way that...well, that I have done in this very article.

Lahore Conference Celebrates Jihad

On August 14, 2008, Pakistan's Independence Day, the Islamist group Jamatud Dawa - the new name of the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, led by Professor Hafiz Muhammad Saeed - held a conference in Lahore, billed as the "Defend Pakistan Conference."

Early this year, the U.S. Department of Treasury froze the assets of Professor Saeed and of Lashkar-e-Taiba operational head Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi, finance chief Haji Ashraf, and others. [1]

At the opening of the August 14 conference, a duo of Hafiz Abdul Wadud Hasan and Hafiz Abdur Rauf sang the following song, described by the organizers as the "jihadi tarana (anthem)." The song is downloaded from the Jamatud Dawa website [2], which posted a recording of the conference. The song begins at at 17: 25 in the recording. Jihad fighters have been around since "Allah's Apostle said, 'I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah." Whoever says this will save his property and his life from me.'" Hadith (Bukhari:V9B84N59) The USA has been naive in sometimes allying themselves with such evil people and has paid a grievous price for their self deception that many to this day continue to practice. Since the time Bloody Muhammad spoke those words above Muslims have slaughter millions upon millions in the name of Allah trying to subjugate all other religions under Islam and demanding no other god but Allah be worshiped. The USA did not make them the USA has just made them angry by resisting them.

Those that do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to respeat them.

IsraelNN.com) Dutch legislator Geert Wilders, producer of the movie Fitna exposing the Koran's incitement to violence, announced that a "Facing Jihad Conference" will take place in Jerusalem in December. "We are organizing this event in Israel to emphasize the fact that we are all in the same boat together," he said in a speech in New York.

Wilders' 15-minute film earlier this year set off violent protests in Muslim countries because of the description of the Muslim prophet Mohammed as a murderer. He is teaming up with Knesset Member Prof. Aryeh Eldad (National Union) for the Jerusalem convention, where he vowed "no racist organizations will be allowed."

Wilders said the conference will mark the beginning of an Alliance of European Patriots that "will serve as the backbone for all organizations and political parties that oppose jihad and Islamization." His speech was sponsored by the prestigious Hudson Institute, which has stated his current programs are aimed at "developing programs of political and economic reform to transform the Muslim world."

He said that "Israel is our first line of defense [but] the war against Israel is not a war against Israel. It is a war against the West. It is jihad. Israel is simply receiving the blows that are meant for all of us. If there would have been no Israel, Islamic imperialism would have found other venues to release its energy and its desire for conquest. Thanks to Israeli parents who send their children to the army and lay awake at night, parents in Europe and America can sleep well and dream, unaware of the dangers looming."

Wilders warned that the Islamization of Europe leaves the United States as "the last man standing." The Dutch legislator presented statistics showing that the new European reality is one of a burgeoning Muslim population [in] ghettos controlled by religious fanatics…, and they are the building blocks for territorial control of increasingly larger portions of Europe… Clearly, the signal is: we rule."...
