Exclamation Female Circumcision: 'If She Dies, It's What Allah Wants'

Female Circumcision: 'If She Dies, It's What Allah Wants'
A Nottingham adviser is fighting to stop women being forciby circumcised, as Guy Woodford reports...

THE practice of female circumcision might seem a distant problem, taking place as it does mainly in African countries.

  1. Seeking asylum: Karen Muthiga fears what will happen if she is made to return to Nairobi.

  2. Immigration specialist: James Ramowski.

But a specialist in Nottingham has warned that the practice – also called female genital mutilation – is a very real threat to some women in the city.

James Ramowski, an immigration law specialist, has helped 21 women in the last three years who are originally from Kenya or the Gambia apply for asylum because they are under pressure to return to their home countries to be circumcised, or they fear they will have to undergo the procedure if they do travel home.

"It is particularly prominent in Senegal, the Gambia and Kenya," said Mr Ramowski.

"It is usually very old women who perform the circumcision. Often they do 20 to 30 girls or young women at a time with the same knife and no anaesthetic whatsoever.

"Children as young as one or two can be circumcised, and the trend is moving towards circumcising earlier to prevent external knowledge or intervention.

"One of my clients, Mariam, from the Mandinka tribe in the Gambia, got married and came to the UK with her husband.

"She gave birth to a daughter here but her and her husband's families were insisting that they returned home to have her circumcised.

"She said she remembered her sister being circumcised and nearly bleeding to death. She said her grandma told her: 'If she dies, it's what Allah wanted'.

"In February this year she came to me and by May 4 she heard her asylum application had been accepted. As soon as one client comes and sees me, others follow soon after."

Some of the women Mr Ramowski helped are here on visas which are still valid – for example they are students or the partners of students – while others may have come here on temporary visas which have now expired.
To date, 13 of the 21 Notts clients he has worked with since setting up 1st Call Immigration Services in Noel Street, Hyson Green, in 2008, have successfully obtained asylum to remain in Britain either on their initial application or after an appeal.

Two of the other seven have been refused and six are awaiting a decision.

Most of the appeals are handled by Nottingham human rights barrister Usha Sood.

Some women contacting Mr Ramowski are single but under pressure from their families to return to their home countries to get themselves or their daughter circumcised.

Some have husbands but are resisting pressure from relatives from both sides of their family to be circumcised in their native country.

Others, like Karen Muthiga from Basford, are married but estranged from husbands.

Mrs Muthiga was distraught when, six months into her marriage, her husband told her she must be circumcised.

Aged 28 and living in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, she had heard the horror stories about the procedure.

Mrs Muthiga, a member of the Kikuyu tribe, said: "I heard it would cause problems with giving birth and it was not safe. I heard I would get infected."

After refusing to be circumcised, Karen says her husband began physically abusing her.

"I went to my parents and told them everything. They advised me to go to the local church," she said.

"I went to the church and told my pastor what had been happening."
She said she joined the church's choir, which was about to travel to the UK, and soon arrived in this country.

"When I got here in June 2008 I contacted my friend who lived in Basford.
"I thought about going to the police but she told me to wait until I felt better and I had courage to talk.

"I stayed with her and helped look after her kids."

Her initial visa has expired. She said she has not had contact with her husband or any relatives since leaving Nairobi three years ago, but fears that if she if she returns home her husband will insist on her being circumcised.

Now aged 31, she moved into national asylum accommodation in Basford in March this year, after being advised to seek Mr Ramowski's help by Nottingham Refugee Forum.

"The people in Nottingham are warm and kind.

"I'd like to go to university and study social work. I'd like to get involved in helping people."

Despite having her asylum application refused and two appeals turned down, Mr Ramowski is considering making a fresh application on her behalf.

There are four types of female circumcision identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), ranging from partial to total removal of the external female genitalia.

The main reason for the procedure is usually cultural.

The WHO says around 140 million women have been subjected to it worldwide, with two million at risk every year. Most live in African countries.

Classic example of the lowest most disgusting form of 'legal islamic jurisprudence', one thing you can say about 'sharia' it epitomises everting that is the evil of Islamism and the scum imams that use it to rule over terrorise their Moslem devoutee's.

Only 14, Bangladeshi girl charged with adultery was lashed to death

By Farid Ahmed and Moni Basu, CNN
March 29, 2011 -- Updated 2309 GMT (0709 HKT)

Darbesh Khan and his wife, Aklima Begum, had to watch their youngest daughter being whipped until she dropped.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hena Akhter, in her last words to her mother, said she was innocent
  • At first, an autopsy said she committed suicide
  • But later, the ugly details of her case surfaced
  • Her family says she was punished twice -- raped and then lashed
Shariatpur, Bangladesh (CNN) -- Hena Akhter's last words to her mother proclaimed her innocence. But it was too late to save the 14-year-old girl.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public.
Hena dropped after 70.
Bloodied and bruised, she was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.
Amazingly, an initial autopsy report cited no injuries and deemed her death a suicide. Hena's family insisted her body be exhumed. They wanted the world to know what really happened to their daughter
.

Sharia: illegal but still practiced

Hena's family hailed from rural Shariatpur, crisscrossed by murky rivers that lend waters to rice paddies and lush vegetable fields.
Hena was the youngest of five children born to Darbesh Khan, a day laborer, and his wife, Aklima Begum. They shared a hut made from corrugated tin and decaying wood and led a simple life that was suddenly marred a year ago with the return of Hena's cousin Mahbub Khan.
Mahbub Khan came back to Shariatpur from a stint working in Malaysia. His son was Hena's age and the two were in seventh grade together.
Khan eyed Hena and began harassing her on her way to school and back, said Hena's father. He complained to the elders who run the village about his nephew, three times Hena's age.
The elders admonished Mahbub Khan and ordered him to pay $1,000 in fines to Hena's family. But Mahbub was Darbesh's older brother's son and Darbesh was asked to let the matter fade.
Many months later on a winter night, as Hena's sister Alya told it, Hena was walking from her room to an outdoor toilet when Mahbub Khan gagged her with cloth, forced her behind nearby shrubbery and beat and raped her.
Hena struggled to escape, Alya told CNN. Mahbub Khan's wife heard Hena's muffled screams and when she found Hena with her husband, she dragged the teenage girl back to her hut, beat her and trampled her on the floor.
The next day, the village elders met to discuss the case at Mahbub Khan's house, Alya said. The imam pronounced his fatwa. Khan and Hena were found guilty of an illicit relationship. Her punishment under sharia or Islamic law was 101 lashes; his 201.
Mahbub Khan managed to escape after the first few lashes.
Darbesh Khan and Aklima Begum had no choice but to mind the imam's order. They watched as the whip broke the skin of their youngest child and she fell unconscious to the ground.
"What happened to Hena is unfortunate and we all have to be ashamed that we couldn't save her life," said Sultana Kamal, who heads the rights organization Ain o Shalish Kendro.
Bangladesh is considered a democratic and moderate Muslim country, and national law forbids the practice of sharia. But activist and journalist Shoaib Choudhury, who documents such cases, said sharia is still very much in use in villages and towns aided by the lack of education and strong judicial systems.
The Supreme Court also outlawed fatwas a decade ago, but human rights monitors have documented more than 500 cases of women in those 10 years who were punished through a religious ruling. And few who have issued such rulings have been charged.
The government needs to enact a specific law to deal with such perpetrators responsible for extrajudicial penalty in the name of Islam.
--Sultana Kamal, head of rights organization Ain o Shalish Kendro.

Last month, the court asked the government to explain what it had done to stop extrajudicial penalty based on fatwa. It ordered the dissemination of information to all mosques and madrassas, or religious schools, that sharia is illegal in Bangladesh.

"The government needs to enact a specific law to deal with such perpetrators responsible for extrajudicial penalty in the name of Islam," Kamal told CNN.
The United Nations estimates that almost half of Bangladeshi women suffer from domestic violence and many also commonly endure rape, beatings, acid attacks and even death because of the country's entrenched patriarchal system.
Hena might have quietly become another one of those statistics had it not been for the outcry and media attention that followed her death on January 31.

'Not even old enough to be married'

Monday, the doctors responsible for Hena's first autopsy faced prosecution for what a court called a "false post-mortem report to hide the real cause of Hena's death."
Public outrage sparked by that autopsy report prompted the high court to order the exhumation of Hena's body in February. A second autopsy performed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital revealed Hena had died of internal bleeding and her body bore the marks of severe injuries.
Police are now conducting an investigation and have arrested several people, including Mahbub Khan, in connection with Hena's death.
"I've nothing to demand but justice," said Darbesh Khan, leading a reporter to the place where his daughter was abducted the night she was raped.
He stood in silence and took a deep breath. She wasn't even old enough to be married, he said, testament to Hena's tenderness in a part of the world where many girls are married before adulthood. "She was so small."
Hena's mother, Aklima, stared vacantly as she spoke of her daughter's last hours. She could barely get out her words. "She was innocent," Aklima said, recalling Hena's last words.
Police were guarding Hena's family earlier this month. Darbesh and Aklima feared reprisal for having spoken out against the imam and the village elders.
They had meted out the most severe punishment for their youngest daughter. They could put nothing past them.

Exclamation UK Muslim Sells 15-Year-Old Girl for Petrol

UK Muslim Sells 15-Year-Old Girl for Petrol
By Claire Ellicott

A married man sold a 15-year-old girl to restaurant workers for sex so he could buy petrol to get home, a court heard yesterday.

Tanveer Ahmed, known as ‘T’ to the young children he groomed, arranged for three men to have sex with the youngster for £100, the court was told.

He pocketed the cash to put fuel in his car and pay off gambling debts.
The 39-year-old is one of nine Asian men on trial for 55 separate charges – which include trafficking, grooming and rape – against teenage girls aged 13 to 16 between 2007 and 2009.

Stafford Crown Court heard that the men, six of them married and one a grandfather, groomed their vulnerable victims before selling them to other men for sex.

The seven teenage girls, all from Telford, Shropshire, were said to have been ‘enticed and ensnared’ into a destructive world by offers of drugs, alcohol and top-ups on their mobile phones.

The girls ‘believed themselves to be loved and in love with some of the men’ but were described by their abusers as ‘******* slags’ behind their backs, the court was told.

The jury heard the 15-year-old ‘pimped out’ by Ahmed fell pregnant by one of the men she was sold to, but he continued to prostitute her. She kept the baby.

Deborah Gould, prosecuting, told the jury that Ahmed targeted the girl by establishing a sexual relationship with her.

He then began to sell her to workers at pubs, restaurants and fish and chip shops to fund his gambling habit.

The girl later told police he supplied her with drugs and alcohol, adding that she had sex with him ‘lots of times’ at locations including his aunt’s home.

Later she was ‘sold’ to three staff from a Bengali restaurant so Ahmed could get petrol money.

Miss Gould said: ‘After the men finished work T [Ahmed] drove them to a flat above a fish and chip shop in Madeley. Each of the men had sex with her.

‘She received none of the money, but the girl believed that Ahmed had made about £100 from selling her. She heard them sorting out the price for her and saw the money being handed over.’

Alleged ring leaders: Brothers Mubarek Ali and Ahdel 'Eddie' Ali are accused of a string of child prostitution offences alongside seven other Asian men.

In the summer of 2009, Mohammed Islam Choudhrey, 52, known as Terry, had sex with her while she was ‘paralytic, felt dizzy and unable to move’, the court heard.

The jury was told that the girl ‘felt dirty for having sex with Terry because he was so old’, but she continued to meet Choudhrey who took her on his deliveries for a fast food shop.

Miss Gould said that she performed sex acts on Choudhrey who would buy her food, cannabis and alcohol and also bought her two mobile phones.

The court also heard details of the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl who was drawn into the world of Ahdel Ali, 23.

Miss Gould told the jury that the youngster felt neglected as her parents spent a lot of time with one of her siblings who was ill and needed hospital care.

Her alleged abuser Ali, known by the Western nickname Eddie, came from a traditional Pakistani background and was destined for an arranged Islamic marriage.

Miss Gould said: ‘Eddie deliberately identified and then targeted this girl who was young, naïve and vulnerable.

‘What possible interest could a 20-year-old working man, a man in a traditional Pakistani household destined for a pre-arranged marriage to a chosen bride… have in a 13-year-old schoolgirl?

'Their lives, cultural backgrounds, ages and interests were wholly incompatible.’

'Eddie deliberately identified and then targeted this girl who was young, naïve and vulnerable'

She said Ali had groomed the girl and had offered her drugs before ‘testing the waters’ to see how she reacted when he introduced sex into the conversation.

The court was told that she had fallen for Ali. Miss Gould added: ‘[The alleged victim] described vividly how vulnerable she was at this time: she thought she was in love with Eddie and she wanted some love at that time of her life, to feel that someone cared for her and she thought, because he was showing her affection, it was real.’

Almost a year later, the court heard she was allegedly raped again by one of Ali’s associates, Mohammed Ali Sultan.

Miss Gould said Ali Sultan had picked up the teenager in his blue Golf car and asked her to perform a sex act on him around September 2008.
When she refused it was claimed he slapped her across the face before raping her in a layby.

Following the alleged attack it was claimed Ali Sultan called her a ‘dirty little slag’ before taking her back to a row of shops and leaving her there.
Ali Sultan is also accused of sexual activity with another 15-year-old girl.
One of her friends allegedly told police that they were sneaked into a house by the back entrance when the offence was supposed to have occurred because ‘Asians can’t hang around with white people’.

Mohammed Ali Sultan, who allegedly slapped, raped and verbally abused one 13-year-old victim. Mohammed Younis, the oldest defendant, is accused of using his home as a brothel where men could have sex with the girls.

The court also heard further details about Mohammed Younis and Abdul Rouf who are both accused of using their homes as brothels.

Miss Gould said: ‘Their premises were being used in effect as brothels, places where men could have sex out of sight with young females.

'The provision of those venues acted as an incitement to such girls to provide sexual services for payments of some kind.’

'When they receive attention from others, they soak it up, believing themselves to be the objects of genuine emotions and affections'

The court heard the victims were the products of severely disrupted families and had no sense of self-worth, leaving them unable ‘to distinguish between abuse and affection’.

Miss Gould said they ‘do not value themselves and... have no expectation that they will be valued by others.’

She added: ‘When they receive attention from others, particularly what they see as exotic older males with money and cars, they soak it up, believing themselves to be the objects of genuine emotions and affections.’

On one occasion, after Ahdel Ali had slept with the 13-year-old in his car, he told her that his wife lived just behind a nearby fence, the court heard.

Brothers Ahdel and Mubarek Ali were alleged to have been the main players in the gang, facilitating contact between the young girls and the men who would go on to become their abusers, the court heard.

One of the girls was allegedly told by another victim that Ahdel Ali had filmed them having sex and was showing it to other people.

The men on trial are Ahdel Ali, Mubarek Ali, Mohammed Ali Sultan, 24, Tanveer Ahmed, Mahroof Khan, 33, Noshad Hussain, 21, Mohammed Islam Choudhrey, 52, Mohammed Younis, 59, and Abdul Rouf.

They deny all charges. The trial continues.

Hillary Clinton Condemns Mideast and African Sexual Violence

by Chana Ya'ar
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/145026

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has issued a strong statement against sexual violence in the Arab Middle East and northern Africa.

Clinton spoke last last week to reporters about attacks that violate “basic human dignity,” such as rape, sexual harassment and “virginity tests.” She praised the “brave women” of Libya who had found the courage to speak of the rapes and other brutality they had suffered from the forces of dictator Muammar Qadaffi.

Clinton called for an investigation of the attacks, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

In Gaza, women have suffered increasing sexual violence since June 2007, when the ruling Hamas terrorist organization wrested control of the region in a Palestinian Authority militia war with the rival Fatah faction.

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was sexually assaulted by an Egyptian mob in Tahrir Square in February during the Arab Spring revolution that toppled the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.

Logan was flown out of Cairo by a network-chartered jet to a U.S. hospital hours after the attack under the veil of a total news blackout on the incident.

Sexual assault is also not uncommon in the Islamic Republic of Iran, where it is considered part and parcel of basic torture procedures for interrogation of both female and male protesters.

Arrow Iraqi Kurdistan considers ban on female genital mutilation

Iraqi Kurdistan considers ban on female genital mutilation

http://www.aknews.com/en/aknews/4/247351/

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/06/ir...utilation.html

"Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report last year that showed that there are at least four factors driving this: a link to Kurdish identity, a religious imperative, social pressure, and an attempt to control a woman's sexuality."

Regarding the religious imperative for female genital mutilation, particularly for Islamic countries outside of Africa such as Yemen, Kurdish areas, and Indonesia, there is a noteworthy correlation with the prevalence of the Shafi'i school of Islamic jurisprudence. In that Islamic legal tradition, female "circumcision" is obligatory. Thus, for both apologists and prospective reformers, it is that much more difficult to brush the practice aside as merely "cultural," or "tribal," and for sincere reformers, it will be that much harder to abolish.

"Bill to ban female genital mutilation before parliament," from AKNews, June 19:
Erbil, June 19 (AKnews) – The Kurdistan parliament will discuss a bill on domestic violence tomorrow, which proposes the criminalization of female circumcision.
The trend, is more widespread in Kurdistan than the surrounding countries, despite awareness raising campaigns carried out by civil society organizations and the media.
It is practiced particularly commonly in rural areas. A German-Iraqi study conducted in 2007/08 showed more than 77 percent of female interviewees aged 14 and over in the Kurdish province of Sulaimaniya had undergone the procedure.
The practice is often carried out at home and by people without medical training. When not done properly the girls, who are often as young as ten, can have lasting damage and in extreme cases die from loss of blood or infection.
It has never, is not now, and will never be done "properly." The deeply disturbing photo that accompanies this story at the link above should make that abundantly clear.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report last year that showed that there are at least four factors driving this: a link to Kurdish identity, a religious imperative, social pressure, and an attempt to control a woman's sexuality.
"It's time for the regional government to step up to the plate and take concrete actions to eliminate this harmful practice because it simply won't go away on its own," said Nadya Khalife, HRW Middle East women's rights researcher.
It is estimated that more than 130 million women worldwide have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, western and southern Asia and parts of the Middle East.
It is not clear how a law, seeking to stop a practice that is not carried out though official means, would be enforced.
Kurdistan's health minister, Taher Hawrami, said authorities are distributing posters to promote awareness, but he said religious leaders should do more to end the practice.
"The clerics should take on the main role. People need to have better understanding of religion in order to give up this phenomenon."
The bill also seeks to curb fathers beating their children and forced marriages.

Exclamation Pakistan: Forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam "extremely common"

Pakistan:
Forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam "extremely common"

http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Pakis...ear-21826.html

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/06/pa...ly-common.html

Once again, while we're told there is "no compulsion in religion" (Qur'an 2:256), there are in reality numerous means of coercion, many of which are enshrined in Islamic law. Qur'an 9:29 itself offers unbelievers the options of conversion, subjugation, or war -- but hey, no compulsion or anything.

And so it is easy for the lines between persuasion and compulsion to become blurred; those in power could care less about splitting hairs on where one ends and the other begins, and subjugated unbelievers would put themselves in danger by calling them out on it. For that matter, we have often seen stories of abducted non-Muslim girls' being forced to sign documents stating they converted willingly: compulsion in signing a document to prove there was "no compulsion."

"Pakistan, forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam. Often unreported out of fear," from AsiaNews, June 14:
Lahore (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Young Hindu girls forced to become Muslim and forced to marry their captors, denounce Pakistani Hindus members of the Rights Movement for "scheduled castes" recently formed in Pakistan. They also call for greater respect for their rights. Hindus belonging to "scheduled castes", ie the protected Hindu minorities, form 6% of the total population of Pakistan, and 10% in the region of Sindh, but are under-represented in both public service and in the elected assemblies. In addition, the movement calls for the creation of a law for the registration of marriages of "scheduled castes" that used the term "Hindu" rather than "scheduled castes" in the column that specifies the religion in the registrar, and that the National Parliament promote a law against religious hatred against them.
The movement brings together various ethnic Hindu groups such as the Kolhi, Bhel, Bagri, Meghwar and Rawar. They have no permanent homes, living in temporary camps at the mercy of local land lords. Since the creation of Pakistan the number of seats in Parliament reserved for minorities has never gone beyond 10. This is why the Movement for Rights calls for granted lands, where they can establish their residence, that they be allowed to celebrate religious festivals and the application of the 6% quota reserved for them in public services. The leaders of the movement point out that the situation is such that the groups are kept in a state prison by landowners, and that instances of forced conversions of Hindu girls are extremely common, and not reported. They ask that measures are taken against those responsible.
The Christian minority suffers for similar reasons. A positive development should, however, be noted: a court in Rawalpindi has acquitted three Christians of blasphemy, even though fears that the three may become the target of an act of violence by Islamic radicals. On June 12 court judge Akhter Sarfraz ordered the release of Hector Haleem, Basharat Masih and Robin Masih because the prosecution was not able to provide evidence supporting the charges presented against them last year by a Muslim, Ghufran Sialvi. The accusation was that they had sent blasphemous messages. The court has opened an investigation to prosecute both the Police Commissioner for failure to provide evidence of the charges for the prosecution. Haleem, 55, runs an Pakistani NGO called "Peace Worldwide”.

Exclamation Brutalised and humiliated: 13-year-old raped and paraded

Brutalised and humiliated:
13-year-old raped and paraded

VEHARI:
Four men named in a gang-rape case were arrested on Monday after the family of the 13-year-old victim blocked the National Highway to protest against the police for failing to arrest them.

Rusksana* was raped and paraded in streets on Saturday allegedly by two sons of a local landlord, their friend and an uncle.

SHO Aslam Ghumman said that the families stopped the agitation only after they were assured that the accused will not be released until the investigation of the case was complete. However, he said that nothing had been established so far. Vehari DPO Nasir Ali Rizvi told The Express Tribune that a detailed inquiry will be required before the matter was taken to the court.

Victims’ brother, Ahsan, has appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take a suo motto notice of the case.

According to the complaint filed with the police, Rukhsana was kidnapped from Chak 88 on her way home from the canal where she had gone to wash clothes with her mother. She said she was gang-raped by Javed and Irfan, sons of an influential landlord; their uncle Ijaz; and their friend Imran. She was then paraded naked in the streets.

Rukhsana told police that she had tried to escape, but her kidnappers had pursued and caught her.

“They tore my clothes and tried to drag me back into the house,” she said. She said two women, mother and sister-in-law of the accused, had also joined the men and beaten her with iron rods.

“Some people came to my help and somebody called my mother, but they wouldn’t stop,” she said.

Surayya, the victim’s mother, said she was called by a neighbour. She said she thought her daughter had gone back to the canal.

“I rushed to the scene and begged them to let her go. I covered her with my shawl but they tore it away too. Some people in the neighbourhood then helped me bring her home.”

Police said that Ahsan had had a scuffle with Javed and Irfan a few days ago. They said the two bothers had threatened him of dire consequences. Some neighbours had had to intervene.

The police were reluctant to take any step against the accused, he said.

On Monday, the residents of the area and relatives of the victim gathered on the National Highway to protest against the police.

The accused have denied the charges and claimed that Ahsan had entered their house and tried to rape their sister. They said he had accused them to cover up the matter.

Exclamation Abbas’ Fake Honor Killing Outrage

Abbas’ Fake Honor Killing Outrage
The Palestinian Authority leader leaves open an honor murder loophole
by Phyllis Chesler

Last month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas “scrapped the laws” which guaranteed “leniency” for honor killers. Family honor will no longer be a mitigating factor in such cases. On the West Bank and in Gaza, such barbaric murders of girls and women routinely draw sentences of six months or less.

Abbas was apparently driven to this unusual act by public outrage about an alleged honor killing which took place near Hebron on the West Bank.

Over a year ago, on April 20, 2010, 20-year-old Aya Baradiya disappeared. Her paternal uncle, 37-year-old Iqab Baradiya, and two accomplices had kidnapped her, bound her hand and foot, and threw her down a well, leaving her to die a slow and painful death. Her remains were not found for more than a year.

Aya was a religious woman who wore a hijab. Her university classmates described her as “chaste and noble-minded.”

What crime did she commit? Aya wanted to marry a man. Her suitor went through the traditional channels. Her parents approved of the match but wanted her to wait until she graduated. Her uncle, 17 years older than she was, strongly disapproved of the engagement. And so he killed her.

Although the media are now reporting her murder as an honor killing, it is not a classic honor killing.

For example, her uncle did not immediately confess. Although many honor killings are disguised as “suicides” or accidents and never made public, in general, those that do come to public light often involve proud confessions. Honor killers confess as a way of publicizing that they have “cleansed their shame.”In Aya’s case, there was no “shame” that had to be cleansed.

In addition, Aya’s parents and siblings did not collaborate in the decision to murder their daughter, knew nothing about it, were haunted by her disappearance, and played absolutely no role in her murder. In fact, when Aya did not return home from university, her parents immediately reported her missing.

One suspects that her uncle may have had a highly inappropriate interest in his niece. His behavior suggests that he had an unnatural proprietary interest in her sexual and reproductive future and acted as if his niece was more like his daughter over whom he had the power of life and death.

How ironic that President Abbas, who has thus far been unmoved by the epidemic of honor killings among Arabs on the West Bank, in Gaza, and in Israel proper (where Israeli police make arrests), has now ostensibly decided to do the right thing vis-a-vis honor killings—when no honor killing has occurred. But is he really doing the right thing?

Aya’s murdering uncle has demonstrated the cruelty of Arab men towards Arab women; this includes the innocent women in their own immediate and extended families as well as women in general. Their misogyny is barbaric. Aya Baradiya was murdered—but it was not an honor murder. Please read my studies on honor killings in order to understand what one actually is. The following are some examples of genuine honor murders among Arabs on the West Bank, in Gaza, and in Israel, which apparently left President Abbas unmoved.

In 2003, Rofayda Qaoud of Abu Qash in the West Bank was murdered by her mother Amira Qaoud, who put a plastic bag over her head and sliced her wrists with a razor. Her crime? Rofayda had been raped by her two brothers and impregnated. According to her mother, the family’s honor demanded that she sacrifice her daughter for the violent crimes of her criminally psychopathic sons.

In 2007, Hamda Abu-Ghanem, 18, was shot to death in Ramle, Israel, by her brother and her cousin because some men in her town had referred to her as a “prostitute.” She was the eighth woman to have been murdered in her extended family in seven years and, in an unprecedented move, the family’s women finally went public.

In 2007, 21-year-old Nadia Abu Amar of Jerusalem was murdered by her three brothers and her uncle because she refused to marry the man she was engaged to and because she got her father arrested and convicted for assault.

In 2009, Fadia Najjar of Gaza City, a divorced mother of five, was bludgeoned to death by her father because she owned a cell phone. He suspected that she was using it to call a man outside of the family. The day after the murder, he turned himself into police.

According to Asma Al-Ghoul, an Arab Palestinian feminist who has focused on Arab honor killings, Najla’ A., 24, a divorced woman living in Rafah in Gaza, was strangled by her extremist brother while sleeping because she used to be away from home for long hours, which ignited rumors about her behavior. After the police discovered what had happened, her family bribed the police and they let the brother go. (Al-Ghoul does not date this case).

In typical Arab style, President Abbas has said he has done something but he has really done nothing. He has not yet signed his vow into law or published it. Abbas has used the unexpected outcry against the (non-honor) murder of a young woman who is being called a “martyr,” and whose reputation was above reproach, to stage a symbolic but actually toothless response to the very real epidemic of honor killings among Arabs. According to experts, judges do not rely upon the “mitigating factor” provision when they hand down lenient sentences for honor murderers. According to Haaretz, a newspaper with which I generally do not agree, here are the facts about what Abbas did (and didn’t) do:
[A] review of the draft of the presidential decree indicates that judges in Palestinian courts, who showed leniency toward murderers – handing down sentences ranging from six months to three or four years in prison in such cases – did not necessarily rely on the two problematic clauses mentioned above, but rather, on other articles not even mentioned in the presidential decree.
In addition, there is this: Aya is being presented as a “chaste” and “noble” girl who did nothing wrong according to Arab standards. What about those Arab girls and women who refuse to veil or to accept arranged marriages? Or who are seen as too “Western?” Do Abbas and Arab society still believe that such women deserve to be honor murdered? In what way are their civil and personal rights protected under the rule of the Palestinian Authority or under Hamas’s rule in Gaza?As usual, the Western and Arab media is not that helpful. In this instance, the Associated Press reporters have further misled the public by failing to understand that Aya Baradiya’s murder, however heinous, was not an honor killing—at least not in the classical sense. They present the facts but fail to analyze them properly.

Furthermore, why did the AP reporters chose to quote Suha Arafat and Hanan Ashrawi, two prominent Palestinian women who masquerade as feminist activists but who have done nothing to combat or expose honor killings in Palestinian society? Suha claims that she tried to persuade her late husband, Yaser Arafat, the terrorist leader, to do something about the problem, but there is no record of this. As for Ashrawi, I searched far and wide for anything that she might have said or done about honor killings before AP quoted her, but there appears to be nothing. Her 1995 memoir, This Side of Peace: A Personal Account, doesn’t contain a single reference to honor killings.

Both claim to have secretly aided would-be honor killing victims. Again, the only networks I know about are Israeli Jewish feminist networks and Christian feminist networks. Like Edward Said, Ashrawi is a Christian, and yet somehow I doubt she would have jeopardized her only-woman status on the Executive Committee of the PLO to help the most vulnerable of her gender in distress. Finally, the only “safe” place an Arab girl or woman can be easily spirited away to is…Israel.

Suha Arafat and Ashrawi are propagandists, ideologues, uber-nationalists who have justified terrorism and demonized Israel. This is their strong suit. They are not feminist activists. Next time, AP should interview Asma Al-Ghoul, who was among the eight female journalists who were arrested, beaten, and tortured by Hamas this past March in Gaza.

Exclamation Muslim "morality police" brutally assaults woman because she was out at night

India:
Muslim "morality police" brutally assaults woman because she was out at night

http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Keral...ght-21906.html

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/06/in...-at-night.html

This Asia News piece never specifically identifies what kind of "fundamentalists" were behind this attack. Militant Baptists? Hardcore Hindus? We only get the real picture from the name of one of the attackers: Thajuddin. And so it becomes clear that this is another story involving the peculiar Islamic "morality" that finds the prospect of a woman out bicycling at night to be immoral, but the brutal assault of that woman to be perfectly moral.

"Kerala: ‘morality police’ attacks women because she is out at night," by Nirmala Carvalho for Asia News, June 22 (thanks to Block Ness):
Mumbai (AsiaNews) – A 31-year-old woman working as an information technology technician at the Infopark in Kakkanad, Kochi, Kerala, was brutally assaulted by a group of people acting as ‘morality police’. The incident occurred last Sunday at 10.30 pm.

Tasni Banu was cycling with a friend when a group of men started shouting at them. “We won't allow you to make this place another Bangalore where girls go out in the night and party,” they said.

"Later four persons abused me using filthy language,” Tasni said. “When I questioned their behaviour, they assaulted me," she said.

The Chief Minister of Kerala asked police for a report on the incident.

It is a very serious concern that many girls have recently been attacked by anti-social elements in Kerala. In Tasni’s case, the attackers warned her to stay off the streets and not to go out at night. They also told her to avoid the Bangalore lifestyle. According to the victim, one of her attackers was probably drunk.

Police believe that fundamentalists are probably behind the incident. “We have collected certain information about the persons who attacked the girl. We will take them into custody soon,” said Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police T R Prakash.

The police on Tuesday recorded statements from Tasni, who is in hospital with severe bruises on her neck and hand. “Women are not safe in the streets of Kochi. The attack reflects the attitude of society towards women who have to go out during the night," Tasni added.

Police said they have identified Thajuddin, one of the attackers. He is said to be an auto-rickshaw driver.

According to Sajan K George, President, Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), “Such incidents are manifestations of the rising tide of fundamentalism which is taking roots in Kerala”. It shows “how a section of the Muslim community is persecuting its own.”

“A few years ago, Tasni Banu, was in the news years ago for defying the fundamentalists in Malappuram as she had opted to marry under the Special Marriage Act . At that time, she had to face the wrath of not only her parents but also a group of fundamentalists who imposed a house arrest on her and later ostracised her."

Default Libya rape victims 'face honour killings'

Quote:
Libya rape victims 'face honour killings'

By Pascale Harter BBC News, Tunisian-Libyan border The International Criminal Court believes Col Gaddafi's forces are using rape as a weapon of war

Libyan women and girls who become pregnant through rape risk being murdered by their own families in so-called "honour killings", according to Libyan aid workers.
Rape is a sensitive topic worldwide, but in this country it is even more of a taboo.
"In Libya when rape occurs, it seems to be a whole village or town which is seen to be dishonoured," says Arafat Jamal of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
Libyan charities say they are getting reports that in the west of the country, which is particularly conservative, Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces have tended to rape women and girls in front of their fathers and brothers.
"To be seen naked and violated is worse than death for them," says Hana Elgadi. "This is a region where women will not go out of the house without covering their face with a veil."
Ms Elgadi is in a group of Libyan volunteers offering medical help and HIV tests. The organisation is also offering to pay for abortions for women who have been raped in the war.
'Killing with love' "Time is against us," says Nader Elhamessi from the Libyan aid agency, World for Libya.

A foreigner cannot go in there with a clipboard and a translator and get a response”
End Quote Hana Elgadi Aid worker
"For the moment pregnancies can be disguised, but not for much longer. Many fathers will kill their own daughters if they find out they have been raped."
"It is killing done with love," says Ms Elgadi. "They believe they are saving the girl."
"That's why we are offering to pay for abortions for women who want them," says Ms Elgadi. She says fatwas - Islamic clerical rulings - have already been made, which sanction abortion in circumstances such as rape.
The charity World for Libya has engaged imams across the border in Tunisia to preach that rape is not the victim's fault.
An estimated 130,000 people have fled western Libya for Tunisia, and the Libyan NGOs which have sprung up to deal with their needs say they believe many are rape survivors who are too ashamed to come forward for help.
World for Libya is trying to reach a group of teenage girls still inside Libya whose school was attacked by forces loyal to Col Gaddafi.
"The armed men separated the girls and raped those they deemed more attractive," says Nader Elhamessi. "One of the girls cut her wrists and killed herself rather than face the shame. The rapes were only reported to us by the girls who were left alone."
One family who contacted Ms Elgadi needed medication for HIV.
"The mother, the father and the son were all raped by Col Gaddafi's forces. The mother came to us when they discovered they had contracted HIV/Aids as a result."
Viagra Ms Elgadi says the father has gone back to Tripoli rather than get help. "The mother desperately wants anti-retrovirals for herself and her son, but is afraid to go to the hospital in Tunisia in case other Libyan refugees see her and guess that she has been raped."
We have also seen evidence that would seem to suggest that rape has been carried out by both sides”
Arafat Jamal UNHCR
"Rape is a crime in this war, like being shot," says Ms Elhamessi. "We are even flying in a highly respected sheikh from the Emirates so he can get this message across."
The International Criminal Court says it believes Col Gaddafi's forces are using rape as a weapon of war. The ICC says it has reason to believe orders to rape were given, and the drug Viagra was distributed to fighters.
A major in the Libyan army who has now deserted told the BBC the shipments of Viagra were widely known about, but neither he nor his colleagues saw them.
"The order to rape was not given to the regular army," says the major, who did not want his name to be used, because his family is still in Tripoli. "Col Gaddafi knew we would never accept it. It was given to the mercenaries."
Mr Jamal, the UNHCR's emergency co-ordinator for Libya, says it has not so far uncovered evidence that rape has been used as a weapon of war, although it has seen evidence of individual instances of rape throughout the country.
"We have also seen evidence that would seem to suggest that rape has been carried out by both sides, but we cannot say on what scale," he says.
Libyan volunteers are advising international agencies on how to get Libyans who have been raped to come forward.
"A foreigner cannot go in there with a clipboard and a translator and get a response," says Ms Elgadi.

Exclamation Police Report: All Assault Rapists in Oslo Follow Muhammad

Police Report:
All Assault Rapists in Oslo Follow Muhammad

by Gil Ronen
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/145161

Defenders of Islam call it a "religion of peace" but many Norwegian women are learning that Islam is the religion of rape. According to an amazing police report released there this month, every single solved case of assault-rape in the country in 2010 was carried out by a Muslim immigrant.

The report was cited by an official Norwegian television station, which interviewed a victim who said that her rapist explained to her that his religion permits him to rape her.

According to the police report there was a total of 186 of known rape cases in 2010. These fall into various categories, the largest one of which is assault-rape, carried out by sheer physical force, of which there were 86 cases. In 83 of these cases the perpetrator could be identified by the victim. In all 83, the attacker was described as having "non-western appearance," a laundered euphemism for Muslim immigrants from Africa, the Middle East, or Asia.

In other categories of rape there were Norwegian attackers as well, but they were still in the minority (Note: the translation of the Norwegian TV report embedded here does not make a distiction between "assault rape" and other forms of rape, and appears to confuse the statistics for 2010 with those for 2006-2010).

A female police officer who commented on the report explained that “Many of the perpetrators who commit these rapes are on the edge of society often unemployed, arriving from traumatized countries. In the past five years it has often been asylum seekers.”

The problem is not new. A report in Aftenposten in 2001 said: “While 65 percent of those charged with rape are classed as coming from a non-western background, this segment makes up only 14.3 percent of Oslo's population. Norwegian women were the victims in 80 percent of the cases.”

“In other words,” says the New American, “Muslims from Africa and other benighted Third World places are targeting Western women for rape.” It elaborates:
“In 2005, the blogger Fjordman reported on a similar rape wave in Sweden. A crime prevention study that year reported that Algerians, Libyans, Moroccans, and Tunisians ‘dominate the group of rape suspects,’ he reported. The same year, the newspaper Aftonbladet reported that nearly half of all rapists were immigrants.”
Yehuda Bello, an Israeli blogger who is well-acquainted with Norwegian culture, noted the report and claimed that Norwegians are a culture that suffers from “extreme boredom” due to the presence of huge oil reserves, and are thus inordinately interested in multiculturalism and assorted “human rights” campaigns.

They are also traditionally anti-Semitic, he believes. As a result their politicians and press are focused on Israel’s actions in Shechem (Nablus) and Hevron and choose to ignore Muslim misdeeds – be they in Iran, Syria, or in Norway itself.

Despite this, he reports, the Muslim rape campaign has become so terrible that even Norwegians have begun to recognize the reality around them, and in recent months there have been protests where the slogan was “Muslims out!”.

Exclamation Egypt: Christian Girls Kidnapped and ‘Sold’

Egypt:
Christian Girls Kidnapped and ‘Sold’
The world remains silent....
by Raymond Ibrahim

Two teenage Coptic girls, cousins, were recently kidnapped and then “sold” in Minya, Egypt—the same region where a Coptic church was recently attacked and desecrated. I tried to find this story in English-language media and, as expected, found nothing, except for one report in Al-Masry Al-Youm titled “Clashes between police and Coptic protesters in Minya”—as if that’s the important story (as usual, the media prefers headlines portraying harried Christian minorities as equally culpable as their Muslim persecutors, thereby justifying use of the preferred phrase, “sectarian strife“).

At the end of the Al-Masry Al-Youm report, we get a trailing sentence alluding to “claims” that two Christian girls “were abducted by Muslims and forced to convert to Islam” as the reason why Copts were demonstrating and clashing with the police in the first place.

One must again turn to Arabic sources for the telling details. I have put together the following narrative and quotes based on these two Arabic reports:

The two girls, Christine Azat (aged 16) and Nancy Magdi (aged 14) were on their way to church Sunday, June 12, when they were seized. Their abductors demanded $200,000 Egyptian pounds for their release. The people of the region quickly put their savings together and came up with the ransom money; but when they tried to give it to the kidnappers, they rejected it, saying they had already “sold” the girls off to another group which requires $12 million Egyptian pounds to return them.

Christine’s father, who has been harrying the police since the minute he discovered the girls were kidnapped—to little avail—says he and his family “have been in a living hell since Christine’s abduction.” Nancy’s father laments that “My daughter has not even outgrown childhood; she is only 14 years old, the youngest in the family, our baby….Since her disappearance my household has been living in continuous depression, misery, and weeping.”

Some have tried to pass the usual rumor that the girls “willingly” ran off and converted to Islam, but even Egyptian officials reject this, saying that Al Azhar, which is the institution that formally recognizes conversions to Islam, has not acknowledged the conversion of underage minors. What will become of Christine and Nancy? Since the exorbitant ransom will likely not be raised, will the teenage girls be killed—like the Christian Iraqi youth who was recently beheaded when his family couldn’t ransom him from his abductors? Probably not; as females, their lot is to be raped, enslaved, and sold off to some rich, sexually-depraved man who believes it his divine right to own infidel sex-slaves.

Therefore, next time you hear about an Egyptian Muslim preacher boasting that Islam permits Muslims to abduct and ransom infidels as a great way to make a living and own female sex-slaves, or when you hear about a Kuwaiti political activist praying to Allah that Kuwait would formally institutionalize sex-slavery, do not brush these aside as mere words, for here are their fruits.

Lebanon's highest Sunni Muslim authority misunderstands Islam, says law against wife-beating and marital rape would "have a negative impact on Muslim children"

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/06/le...and-marit.html

"Good women are obedient....As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them." -- Qur'an 4:34

"If a husband calls his wife to his bed [i.e. to have sexual relation] and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning." -- Sahih Bukhari 4.54.460

"By him in Whose Hand lies my life, a woman can not carry out the right of her Lord, till she carries out the right of her husband. And if he asks her to surrender herself [to him for sexual intercourse] she should not refuse him even if she is on a camel's saddle." -- Ibn Majah 1854

Can we get a condemnation of the Dar al-Fatwa from any Islamic spokesman in the West? Honest Ibe Hooper? Boy Reza Aslan? Feisal "Man of Peace" Rauf? Anyone? Anyone? "Lebanon Sunni clergy reject domestic abuse law," from AFP, June 24:
BEIRUT — Lebanon's highest Sunni Muslim authority on Friday rejected a bill aimed at protecting women against domestic violence and marital rape, saying it would lead to the demise "of the family as in the West."

"Islam is very aware of and concerned with... resolving problems of poor treatment... but this should not happen by cloning Western laws that encourage the breakdown of the family and do not suit our society," said the influential Dar al-Fatwa in a statement on its website.

Dar al-Fatwa also slammed as "heresy" a clause in the bill that criminalises marital rape, accusing those behind the draft law of "inventing new types of crimes."

"This will have a negative impact on Muslim children... who will see their mother threatening their father with prison, in defiance of patriarchal authority, which will in turn undermine the moral authority" of fathers, it said.

"We must continue to follow sharia (Islamic law) as concerns the Muslim family," it added.

GANG RAPE rampant but victims are blamed in the Islamic Republic of Iran

June 27, 2011
http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/...ublic-of-iran/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-13777308

In a religiously conservative town near the city of Isfahan, women at a private party were abducted last month and gang raped at knife point. One week later, a female university student was attacked and raped by unknown assailants on the heavily-guarded campus in Masshad, a holy city. In both cases, officials accused the victims of not wearing the hijab or headscarf in the proper fashion and general un-Islamic conduct.

BBC - These high-profile cases and the derogatory comments made by Iranian authorities have outraged women’s rights groups who have long complained of the increasingly high rate of sexual harassment. As the stories dominate newspaper headlines, a political and public debate is raging about the reasons for the apparent rise in sexual crimes in the Islamic state and how to prevent and punish them.

It was on the evening of 24 May that two families in the leafy suburbs of Khomeinishahr invited their friends to a private party. In total, 14 people gathered in a walled garden. According to press reports, it was late when a gang of more than a dozen men armed with long knives entered the garden, locked some men in a room and tied others to trees. Female guests – including one said to have been heavily pregnant – were taken to an adjacent property and raped.

One guest used a hidden mobile phone to call 110, the police emergency hotline. Most of the attackers had fled by the time officers arrived, reports said, but four were later arrested.

In the medium-sized town, word of the rapes spread like wildfire. However they were not covered by the tightly-controlled state press or local media, and no official statements were made for over a week. With people angered by this silence and fearful about the security of local women, a huge protest was organised outside the courthouse via text messages. Yet the comments then made by state officials were to provoke even greater controversy.

VICTIMS BLAMED: ”Those who were raped were not praiseworthy,” said the imam of Khomeinishahr, Musa Salemi, in his Friday sermon. ”Only two out of the 14 were related. They had come to our town to party and provoked the others [the rapists] by their wine drinking and dancing.” His sentiments were echoed in comments made by the town’s police commander, Revolutionary Guards Col Hossein Yardoosti.

“I believe the raped women’s families are to blame, because if they had proper clothing and if the sound of their music was not so loud, the rapist would not have imagined it as a depraved get-together,” he was quoted as saying.

Reports said that he was considering legal action against the rape victims for their behaviour.

The response of the authorities has also been questioned in the university rape case. Fellow students pointed out that the campus is tightly-controlled by security services and suggested that the attack could not have escaped their notice.

As they held a candle-lit vigil to support the rape victim, they made accusations of collusion by guards and a cover-up.

A
28-year-old beautiful beautician traineee was arrested at a major demonstration in Tehran, imprisoned for a couple of weeks, of course raped repeatedly. Her body was found outside of Tehran in a shallow grave, partialy burnt. Police advised parents to keep quiet.

Some commentators argue that a recent wave in sexual crimes is caused by extraordinary sexual tensions among the growing youth population, who spend most of their lives separated by gender with little interaction.
The government’s political opponents have found other triggers too. They suggest that sexual attacks allegedly perpetrated by security forces in Iran’s post-election violence in 2009 may have legitimised such acts for certain segments of the population.

Religion of Rape
An Oslo police report confirms that every solved case of assault-rape in Norway in 2010 was carried out by a Muslim immigrant
by Jamie Glazov

[Editor's note: Jamie Glazov's article below, Muslim Rape, Feminist Silence, is reprinted from our Nov. 1, 2006 issue. The subject is Western feminist silence about the Muslim rape of kafirs (non-Muslims) and the Islamic theology that sanctions it. Frontpage's editors thought it would be relevant to rerun in light of the recent startling Oslo police report confirming that every single solved case of assault-rape in the country in 2010 was carried out by a Muslim immigrant. Meanwhile, the Western Left remains completely silent.]

Muslim Rape, Feminist Silence
By Jamie Glazov

Unveiled women who get raped deserve it.

That’s the pedagogy preached by the Mufti of Australia, Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali, who recently sparked an international stir by pronouncing that women who do not veil themselves, and allow themselves to be “uncovered meat,” are at fault if they are raped. This is nothing new, of course, and it is somewhat mysterious why the Sheikh’s comments have caused any shock at all, since his view is legitimized by various Islamic texts and numerous social and legal Islamic structures. And that is why back in September 2004 in Denmark, al-Hilali’s Australian counterpart, the Mufti Shahid Mehdi, declared exactly the same thing, stating that unveiled women are “asking for rape.”

All of this, in turn, explains the skyrocketing epidemic of Muslim rape in non-Islamic countries. Muslim newcomers are significantly overrepresented among convicted rapists and rape suspects throughout European nations such as Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.

No wonder why many Muslim rapists openly admit their actions and justify them smugly with casual references to their religious and cultural beliefs. This horrifying phenomenon was on display in a court trial in Australia last year, in which a Muslim rapist, going by the name ”MSK”, taunted his sobbing 14-year-old victim and proudly professed the legitimacy of his sexual assaults on young girls by explaining that his victims were not veiled — as the Islamic religion mandates women to be. [1]

“MSK” is from Pakistan. He is doing in Australia what he learned best back home: in some of the most notorious rural areas of Pakistan, gang rape is officially sanctioned as a legitimate form of keeping women marginalized and “in their place.” As noted earlier, certain realms of Islam help institutionalize this form of violent misogyny. The Koran, for instance, permits Muslim men to enslave – and have sexual relations with – the women of unbelievers captured in the spoils of war (Sura 4:23-24). The Islamic legal manual ‘Umdat al-Salik, which is endorsed by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, sanctions this violence, affirming that Muslims can enslave captured infidel women and make them concubines.

To compound this pathology, a notion has developed within the system of gender apartheid in which Muslims like “MSK” have grown up: the idea that a woman who does not veil herself is somehow responsible for any sexual or physical harm done to her. In the psychopathic mental gymnastics that occur in the perpetrators’ minds, the unveiled woman must be sexually punished for violating the “modesty” code. Thus, when Islamic Muftis like Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali and Shahid Mehdi declare that women who refuse to wear headscarves are “asking for rape,” they are merely regurgitating a popular theme in many segments of Islamic culture.

In traditional Islamic law, rape cannot be proven unless four males testify as witnesses (Sura 24:4 and 24:13). In other words, raped women cannot get justice anywhere Islamic law prevails. More horrifying still, a woman who has the courage to say she was raped, and fails to produce the four male witnesses (which is obviously almost always the case), ends up being punished because her accusation is regarded as an admission of pre-marital sex or adultery. And this is why seventy-five percent of the women in prison in Pakistan are behind bars for the crime of being a victim of rape.

In Holland, myriad women now bear the horrible scar that has infamously become known as “smiley,” whereby one side of the face is cut up from mouth to ear – a war mark left by Muslim rapists as a warning to other women who don’t veil themselves.

In France, the phenomenon of Muslim gang rape as punishment for non-veiling even has a word to describe it: “tournante” (take your turn). In areas where Muslims form the majority (i.e. the Muslim suburb of Courneuve, France), even non-Muslim women feel pressured to veil themselves in fear of Muslim sexual and physical punishment.

In the context of this epidemic of Muslim violence against women, and the open legitimization of it pronounced by Islamic clerics, one would think that the Western feminists of our time would be up in arms, sympathetically coming to the side of their raped sisters and standing up for women’s rights in general.

But this is just not the case.

The West’s leftist feminists are responding with an apathetic heartlessness and deafening silence. [2]

It’s all very much understandable and expected, of course: it is politically correct and cutting-edge to scream with moral indignation about a woman’s right to an abortion in the West, but to actually care for – and come to the public defense of – the female victim of a gang-rape committed by Muslims is unthinkable. This is so because admitting the Muslim rape epidemic, and the theology and institutions on which it is based, and denouncing it, would violate the central code of the “progressive” leftist faith: anti-Americanism and cultural relativism. No culture can be said to be better than any other – unless it is American culture, which is always fair game for derision and ridicule. But to criticize any Third World culture in general – and an adversary culture in particular – is to surrender the political cause and faith.

And that’s why leftist feminists are also completely mum on the horrors of forced marriages, honor killings and female genital mutilation within the Islamic world. The worldview of Oslo Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Unni Wikan, is perfect in representing leftist feminists’ stand on Muslim rape and Islamic gender apartheid. Wikan’s solution for the high incidence of Muslims raping Norwegian women stresses neither the punishment of the perpetrators nor the repudiation of the Islamic theology that legitimizes such abuse of women. Instead, Wikan recommends that Norwegian women veil themselves. This is because, in Wikan’s view, Western women must take their share of responsibility for the rapes, since they are not dressing and behaving according to Muslim understanding. The Norwegian women, in her view, are to realize that they live in a multicultural society and should, therefore, adapt themselves to it. Sheikhs Taj al-Din al-Hilali and Shahid Mehdi would be proud.

It has long been evident that Western leftist feminists couldn’t care less about real actual breathing women; they care only about their ideological beliefs. For them, the victims of Muslim rape can be easily forgotten and dismissed — for the pursuit of their ultimate goal: to aid and abet the West’s totalitarian enemies and to wreak the destruction of their own free societies which bestow the individual liberties and rights that they despise and abhor.

NOTES:
[1] Although debate exists about whether Islam enforces women’s veiling, and there are some valiant Islamic reformers fighting for a tolerant Islam that does not enforce veiling, the unfortunate reality is that Muslim fundamentalists find legitimacy for forced veiling in Islamic texts. See Robert Spencer’s Onward Muslim Soldiers, pp. 77-78 and The Truth About Mohammad, pp. 44 and 61.

[2] Dr. Phyllis Chesler has powerfully documented Western feminism’s betrayal of Islamic gender apartheid’s victims in The Death of Feminism.

(India) Muslim Students Sell Orphan Girl to Wealthy Arab

HYDERABAD: Following the arrest of a qazi on Monday for trying to forcibly marry off a young poor Muslim girl to an Arab Sheikh, police on Tuesday arrested two Sudanese nationals, two qazis and two female pimps for forcing a minor girl to enter into a contract marriage with one of the foreigners. The Sudanese national Mohammed Elshafie Mohammed Elhassan alias Ansari of AC Guards, who is in the city on a student visa, married the girl to exploit her and later leave her when he completes his studies, police said. His friend also tried to take advantage of the girl.

Though there have been instances of Arab Sheikhs marrying young girls from the city, this is the first case where an African national was involved.

The contract marriage came to light after the 16-year-old girl from Bela Colony in Moghulpura escaped from Ansari’s clutches and approached the police. The nikah had been performed on June 9 and the girl lodged a complaint with the police on June 23, 16 days after the marriage.

According to South Zone DCP Vineet Brijlal, the nikah was performed without the consent of the girl. “The girl hails from a very poor family and her father had expired eight years ago. She is one of five siblings,” the DCP said.

25-year-old Ansari is pursuing B.Sc from a private college at Punjagutta. Ansari’s 27-year-old friend, Khaled Elrashid Khalid, also from Sudan, is pursuing a computer course in the city and allegedly tried to outrage the modesty of the girl.

Vineet Brijlal said two pimps - Zahera Begum of Kalapathar and Ghousia Begum of Falaknuma - were operating in the Old City in search of young girls to marry off to foreigners.

The women take the help of two Qazis, Syed Shakeeluddin alias Shakeel Ahmed and Syed Abdul Malik, both from AC Guards to get the marriages performed.

“Ansari gave Rs 50,000 as meher to the girl’s family and also some amount to the pimps. The nikah was performed after showing that the girl was a major and had consented,” Brijlal said.

“Ansari did not intend to take the girl away with him.

He married her only to take advantage of her,” the DCP added. The accused had also taken the thumb impressions of the girl on the day of marriage so that they could execute a ‘Qula Nama’ (divorce) when the Sudanese leaves.

Police suspect that six to seven similar marriages have taken place in the past six months. “We are trying to identify the girls and a special team has been formed to track them,” the DCP said.

He added that they are also asking the Wakf Board to ensure strict implementation of guidelines by the Qazis while performing marriages.

Police registered cases under sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 366A (procreation of minor girl), 376 (rape), 420 (cheating) and other sections of IPC and said that relevant sections of Immoral Trafficking Act would also be added in the chargesheet.

(Italy) Moroccan Migrant Murders Wife for Being 'Too Western'

Padua, 28 June (AKI) - A Moroccan carpenter living in northern Italy is suspected of stabbing his wife to death because she wanted to leave him and begin a more liberated and western life with another man.

Police suspect 36-year old Zrhaida Hammadi of killing his 33-year-old wife Fatima Chabani at their apartment in the city of Padua near Venice by stabbing her repeatedly in the neck and shoulder, severing her jugular vein.

Neighbours telephoned the police after hearing blood-curdling screams from the apartment late Sunday, but the police said they found Chabani already dead and Hammadi awaiting their arrival, sitting motionless in a chair with his head bowed.

The couple were married in 2002 and had a six-year-old son. The family moved to Padua in January from the surrounding province in Italy's northeast. Members of the local Moroccan community described Hammadi as "a quiet, decent and hard-working" man.

The couple reportedly had frequent rows and police are probing Hammadi's' claims that his wife was seeing another man.

On Tuesday, a cultural mediator in Padua, 30-year-old Tunisian Muslim immigrant Maher Selmi sparked controversy by claiming that it was right to stone "adulteresses" to death.

Moroccan women's activist and member of Italy's parliament Souad Sbai deplored Chabani's "chilling" slaying and the remarks by Selmi, who is a graduate in Italian language and literature.

"This is the latest outrage against an innocent young woman whose only crime was her desire to live peacefully," said Sbai.

Sbai is a member of parliament for the ruling conservative People of Freedom party and president of the Association of Moroccan Women in Italy.

Her group made an unsuccessful application to form the civil plaintiff in the murder trial of three male relatives of a twenty-year-old Pakistani woman, Hina Saleem found buried in the garden of her family home with her throat slit and her head facing Mecca in August 2006.

Hina had 'dishonoured' the family by dressing in western clothes, working in a pizzeria in the northern town of Sarezzo and living with her Italian boyfriend and refusing and arranged marriage.

In February, 2010, Italy's Supreme Court said Hina's father Mohammed Saleem must serve the entire 30-year prison sentence handed to him for her murder, ruling that he acted "out of a distorted, pathological sense of parental possession" rather than for religious and cultural reasons.

Hina Saleem's shocking murder is one of several "honour" crimes which have brought the issue of Muslim cultural integration in Italy into stark relief in recent years.

El Ketaoui Dafani a Moroccan immigrant cook is currently standing trial for the murder of Sanaa Dafani in northeastern Italy in September 2009 after he discovered she had a relationship with an older Italian man.

Italy's equal opportunities ministry, the Association of Moroccan Women in Italy, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, and the Province of Pordenone and forming the plaintiff in that trial.

Arrow Lesley Hazleton: Karen Armstrong II

Lesley Hazleton: Karen Armstrong II

Editor's Note: I think it may be of interest to some readers who recall Aymenn Jawad's public attack on me last March to note that Aymenn has written to me and apologized, and has recently sent me the article below. Our differences and minor disagreements should not interfere with our common work in defense of human rights, although they often do among the petty, the small-minded, the vindictive and the pathologically competitive. -- RS

Lesley Hazleton: Karen Armstrong II
by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
It is not uncommon, as we go through our lives, for us to meet certain individuals who like to call themselves “spiritual seekers.” Apparently suffering from pathological narcissism, they feel a constant need for some sort of spiritual “nourishment” (i.e. a hopelessly vague outpouring of emotions), and accordingly flutter like bees from the flower of one religion to the next, tasting the nectar only for a brief time before moving on. They constitute a clear contrast, then, from normal people who can satisfy themselves for most of their lives with adhering to one religion or none at all.

Readers may recall -- as a prime example of this unstable “spiritual seeker” personality -- the egregious Karen Armstrong, who around four years ago entered into a feud with Robert Spencer over a highly dishonest review she wrote for the Financial Times, in which she attacked Spencer’s book The Truth About Muhammad. For example, Armstrong, who is herself the author of two hagiographical works on Muhammad, falsely accused Spencer of not citing earlier verses of the Qur’an -- such as 29:46 -- that counsel tolerance towards Christians and Jews. In fact, Spencer cited 29:46 twice in his book (pg. 17 and pg. 51).

Much of Armstrong’s howling against Robert is rooted in her own anti-Christian bigotry, especially her hostility against the Catholic Church. Meanwhile, Islam has apparently done much to aid her “convalescence”: supposedly, she is recovering from a bad religious experience during her time as a nun, or something. As she put it in an interview with Al-Jazeera on December 20, 2005:
“I really admire the Muslim tradition so much…it was the study of Islam and Judaism, but Islam particularly, that brought me back to a sense of what religion could be at its best…I have absorbed so much of Islam that it has become a part of me…I would describe myself as convalescent; recovering from a bad religious experience by the study of these other traditions which continue to inspire me and feed me.”
Reread the parts highlighted in bold, and before your eyes unfolds a picture of a deeply and hopelessly confused woman.

At the most extreme, “spiritual seekers” turn out to be clinically diagnosable psychopaths such as David Wulstan Myatt, who has been noted before here at Jihad Watch as a neo-Nazi-Satanist-turned-jihadist. Prior to this, Myatt had also practiced Buddhism and Taoism, but now seems to have left Islam for his own harmless lunatic philosophy, which he dubs “The Numinous Way.” This is based on rather bizarre readings of the fragments of pre-Socratic philosophers like Heraclitus.

Today, however, it seems that a successor to Karen Armstrong has arisen in one Lesley Hazleton. Echoing Armstrong's disdain for Christianity, Hazleton has little problem with writing books like Jezebel that disparage Biblical figures, yet thinks it necessary to become an Islamic apologist and to deflect all rational scrutiny of traditional, orthodox interpretations of core Islamic texts. A case in point is a talk she gave to TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), entitled “On Reading the Koran.” What follows is a fisking of the main misleading distortions in her dreadful lecture:

"You may have heard about the Koran's idea of paradise being 72 virgins.”

On the contrary, it has been noted here and elsewhere that the concept of 72 virgins derives not from the Koran, but from the Hadith:

“None is made to enter Paradise by Allah Most High except Allah Most High shall marry him to seventy-two wives, two of them from the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise and seventy of them his inheritance from the People of Hellfire, not one of them but her attraction never lags nor his arousal ever wanes.” This was narrated by Ibn Majah, Ibn `Adi in the Kamil, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Ba`th wal-Nushur.

As-Suyuti described the above chain of transmission as “fair” in al-Jami al-Saghir.

If Hazleton imagines that this idea is not taken seriously anywhere, how does she explain the fact that in 2004, a would-be Palestinian suicide bomber by the name of Husam Abdu was convinced by his handlers that he would get 72 virgins in Paradise if he were to blow himself up? None of this is to say that the concept of 72 virgins is the correct or dominant view of Jannah across Islamic sects; yet the notion of virgins in Paradise is undeniably well-grounded in mainstream Islam and is found in the Qur’an. Hazleton dismisses as “old-fashioned orientalism” the image of the houris of Jannah as virgins with large eyes or big breasts. Let the Qur’an speak for itself. Take various renderings by Muslims of sura 52, ayah 20:

YUSUF ALI: They will recline (with ease) on Thrones (of dignity) arranged in ranks; and We shall join them to Companions, with beautiful, big and lustrous eyes.

PICKTHALL: Reclining on ranged couches. And we wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.

SHAKIR: Reclining on thrones set in lines, and We will unite them to large-eyed beautiful ones.

Are Yusuf Ali, Pickthall and Shakir “old-fashioned orientalists,” Lesley?

Meanwhile, in 78:33, we do find that some Muslim translators are so embarrassed about the Arabic word “كَوَاعِبَ” that they disguise its true meaning. For context, we should give 78:31-34, rendered as follows by some non-Muslim translators and two Muslim translators:

Arberry: Surely for those who fear God awaits a place of security, gardens and vineyards and maidens with swelling breasts, like of age, and a cup overflowing.

Rodwell: But, for the God-fearing is a blissful abode, Enclosed gardens and vineyards; And damsels with swelling breasts, their peers in age, And a full cup.

Al-Hilali and Khan: Verily, for the Muttaqûn, there will be a success (Paradise); Gardens and grapeyards; And young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age; And a full cup (of wine).
Note: words in brackets indicate Al-Hilali and Khan’s explanatory parentheses.

In his tafsir on the Qur’an, Ibn Kathir, endorsing the authority of Ibn Abbas, Mujahid and others, writes that 78:33 “means round breasts. They meant by this that the breasts of these girls will be fully rounded and not sagging, because they will be virgins, equal in age.” Is Ibn Kathir likewise an “old-fashioned orientalist,” Lesley?

Anyway, on to her next deception:

“And where the Bible is addressed exclusively to men, using the second and third person masculine, the Koran includes women -- talking, for instance, of believing men and believing women -- honorable men and honorable women.”

As is to be expected, the “feminist” Lesley Hazleton glosses over Qur'anic verses such as 4:34, which affirms:

YUSUF ALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

PICKTHALL: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

SHAKIR: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

The emphasis here is clearly on obedience and male superiority. It is noteworthy that Yusuf Ali and Shakir seem rather embarrassed by the traditional import of the verse, and are thus less blunt than Pickthall. Though Yusuf Ali puts the word “lightly” in brackets after “beat them” in reference to disobedient wives, it should be pointed out that the original Arabic implies nothing of the sort. It just says, “Beat them.” It would be nice if this verse were viewed as only applying to a specific historical context in traditional theology. Yet, for example, the 13th century classical commentator Mahmud Al-Alusi in his commentary Ruhul Ma’ani gives four reasons that any Muslim man may beat his wife: “if she refuses to beautify herself for him,” if she refuses sex when he asks for it, if she refuses to pray or perform ritual ablutions, and “if she goes out of the house without a valid excuse.”

The result of this traditionally interpreted divine sanction is the widespread prevalence of wife-beating in Muslim countries. For instance, Amnesty International reports that “according to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, over 90% of married women report being kicked, slapped, beaten or sexually abused when husbands were dissatisfied by their cooking or cleaning, or when the women had ‘failed’ to bear a child or had given birth to a girl instead of a boy.” Again, pace what many of our opponents like to claim, we are not saying that Al-Alusi's interpretation of 4:34 is necessarily the correct or only view taken amongst theologians of the verse. Nevertheless, it is simply wishful thinking to deny any connection between the ayah and abuse of women in the Islamic world today.

Finally, we come to Lesley Hazleton’s distortion of the traditional doctrine of offensive jihad:

“Or take the infamous verse about killing the unbelievers. Yes, it does say that, but in a very specific context: the anticipated conquest of the sanctuary city of Mecca where fighting was usually forbidden. And the permission comes hedged about with qualifiers.”

It is of course true that taken at face value from an outsider’s perspective, 9:5, to which Lesley is referring, appears to have a specific historical context in referring to the conflict between Muhammad’s followers in Medina and the pagans at Mecca. Nonetheless, the ninth sura, normally considered in traditional theology to be amongst the last verses revealed in Muhammad’s career, is interpreted in the orthodox schools of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) as the culmination of the doctrine of jihad and as abrogating previous verses that may counsel peace. In particular, 9:29 is seen as offering unbelievers three choices: conversion, subjugation under Islamic law and payment of the jizya poll tax, or death. This has been documented numerous times at Jihad Watch, and I see no reason for repetition. Yet suffice it to say that there is a clear continuity between these broad elements of traditional theology on the subject of aggressive warfare and the justifications that modern-day jihadists invoke for their actions.

For example, my aunt’s husband in Baghdad was kidnapped in early 2007 by Tanzim Qaidat Al-Jihad fi Bilad Al-Rafidayn (“Al-Qa’ida in Mesopotamia” -- AQM), which demanded ransom money of $1 million from my family as jizya to fund their jihad. Though he was released after three weeks for only $40,000, others did not get off so easily, such as the Chaldean Catholic Archbishop of Mosul -- Paulos Faraj Rahho -- who was similarly taken hostage by AQM the following year so as to allow the group to levy jizya from the Christian communities in Mosul. His murder took place in February or March 2008.

Would Lesley Hazleton care to explain why she thinks that Osama Bin Laden, Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Tehreek-e-Taliban and a whole host of jihadists, their organizations and cheerleaders amongst Muslims, are all “misunderstanders” of Islam? The point is that non-Muslims are not supposed to make a pretense of knowing what constitutes “true” or “pure” Islam. However, it is useful to see where the jihadists find the basis for justifying what they do. To point out and shed light on their sources is not hateful; nor does it constitute essentializing the entire Islamic religion. If anything, it is pseudo-intellectuals such as Lesley Hazleton and Karen Armstrong who are guilty of the very essentialism they accuse us of practicing. Some readers may well disagree with me at this point, and if you wish to discuss the matter further, you can ask Robert for my e-mail and engage in private correspondence with me.

That said, there is no doubt that Lesley Hazleton, who has proven to be another one of those irritating “spiritual seekers,” has simply taken up Karen Armstrong’s mantra. Hence we can all agree her flimsy apologetics must be exposed.

What is the significance of Muhammad commanding a woman to breastfeed a grown man?
by Raymond Ibrahim

[Photo above: Sheikh demonstrates how far up his rectum a rebellious man's arm was shoved for ignoring Muhammad's command.]

The other day I saw a video of a sheikh warning Muslims against disregarding Muhammad’s sunna, or the rules and customs the prophet prescribed for Muslims. To support his point, he read a hadith wherein Muhammad told Muslims: “When you wake up from sleep to pray, wash your hand before you put it in the ablution water, for you do not know where your hand has spent the night.”

Then the sheikh told about a man who, upon hearing Muhammad’s words, deridingly said, “What, am I not going to know where my own hand has been?!”

This man woke up to find his arm—from hand to elbow—shoved up his anus.

The moral of the story? It is dangerous to ignore Muhammad’s words. The sheikh stressed the authoritative source of this anecdote, Sharh Sahih Muslim, and read its closing warning: “Thus let the mortal fear Allah and not make light of the sunna—for see what happened to this man for rebelling and mocking the words of the prophet.”

There is a reason why Islam’s guardians—past and present—always threaten Muslims to take the sunna seriously: Muhammad has said any number of bizarre or perverse things that naturally provoke abhorrence, if not laughter.

Let us examine just one: the notion of adult breastfeeding, or rida’ al-kabir in Islam, which started when Muhammad commanded a woman to “breastfeed” a grown man. Because it is contained in a canonical hadith, today, nearly 1400 years later, top Muslim authorities still advocate this perverse practice. After all, to reject it or any other canonical hadith is to reject the sources and methodology of usul al-fiqh—in short, to reject Sharia.

Now, let us connect the dots to see how the bizarre in Islam demonstrates the violent.

Consider: If Muslims are still compelled to be true to things like “adult breastfeeding,” simply because 7th century Muhammad said so, is it not logical to accept that they embrace their prophet’s even better documented and unequivocal words concerning the infidel?

Look at it this way: the issue of adult breastfeeding is embarrassing for Muslims; far from providing them with any sort of advantage or benefits, it places them, especially their women, in a ludicrous position (indeed, it is ranked first in this list of “top ten bizarre or ridiculous fatwas“). So why is it still a relevant issue among Muslims? Because Muhammad once commanded it. Thus, like it or not, Muslims must somehow come to grips with it.What, then, of Muhammad’s other commandments—commandments that, if upheld, far from embarrassing Muslims, provide them with power, wealth, and hedonistic joys—that is, commandments that jibe quite well with mankind’s most primitive impulses? I speak of Muhammad’s (and by extension Sharia’s) commandments for Muslims to wage war (“jihad”) upon the infidel, to plunder the infidel of his wealth, women, and children, and to keep him in perpetual subjugation—all things that define Islam’s history vis-à-vis the non-Muslim.

In other words, the Muslim mentality that feels the need to address adult breastfeeding, simply because Muhammad once advised it, must certainly be sold on the prophet’s constant incitements for war and conquest.

Living in an era where the Muslim world is significantly weaker than the infidel world, and so currently incapable of launching a full-on offensive, one may overlook this fact. But the intention is surely there. One need only look to how non-Muslim minorities, especially Christians, are treated in the Muslim world—where they are persecuted, kidnapped, raped and ransacked—to be sure of it.
